I don't think the cost per disc is a useful way of judging value. Cost per episode is what matters to me.

Not me.  It used to be there was little to no difference anyway, as all companies would go four or five episodes per disc, but nowadays of course you've got companies cramming more and more episodes per disc to cut down on costs.  It's for just that reason though that I think it only makes sense to evaluate the cost per disc, since the number of discs used has a direct affect on the cost and quality of the product.  See a lot of FUNi's recent and upcoming collection releases where they've cut what would have used to been 3 disc sets down to 2 and 6 disc collections to 4, and as a result has made them cut out or not include as many extras as before and sacrificed video quality as a consequence of having less space.  Because they're using less discs they can afford to sell the shows for less, but you're getting less quality with them as a result.  To me, that means the product is worth less then, so it's only appropriate they be priced cheaper.  In the same way, a show that's released sub only should also be expected to be sold at a lower price than if it had received a dub, since that cuts out a lot of cost in producing the release as well.

Another part of the cost too that I don't think you're considering in regards to Kenshin's price, is the licensing fee companies get charged.  FUNi's stated that it used to be that the Japanese charged pretty large upfront licensing fees for shows in the past.  Only of late has it been that they greatly reduced or dropped that, making it a lot easier on the Region 1 companies now.  Media Blasters in comparison to either Bandai or FUNi is a pretty small company, too, so I'm sure a show like Kenshin was a pretty large investment for them to make back then.  It's one of their few shows that has ever been lucky enough to have a big TV airing (unlike say Ah! My Goddess, which they said licensing fee was so high for they'll probably be lucky to ever just break even on it), so I'm sure it's been profitable enough for them by now to have it selling for as cheaply as they are, but you can't exactly expect them to be able to match the price point for some of the most recent releases from other companies.

Equivalent quality is of course necessary to make comparisons. I really doubt however that Bebop and E7 were released in lower quality than Kenshin. The price is no doubt due to those high licensing fees. Doesn't justify it.

LOL  What's to justify? Media Blasters is hardly the, thankfully no longer in existence, Bandai Visual.  Like I said, the price for it is very reasonable and basically the same as what most other shows cost on a per disc, or even per episode, basis.

I'm just saying that the fact the Japanese reamed MB on the license fee doesn't make the price acceptable. Even though I love Kenshin and I would love to have it, I'm not paying those prices. Unless I start making WAY more money. Hopefully I'll find it cheap on sale sometime.

Yeah, and I'm just saying it is perfectly acceptable.  Pointing to Right Stuf's non-sale prices on it is hardly evidence to the contrary, or are you trying to tell me that my getting 68 episodes of the show for under 80 dollars is not a good price?

Amazon has the season one box for 39 bucks. That's more reasonable, though I'ld prefer it be moar reasonable still. :smileytongue: Right Stuf's price of 60 bucks is no. They're not going to sell much at that rate. Amazon has the second season for 58. Still in premium territory. And Amazon is the cheapest ur going to find anything on a daily basis.

What do u mean 68 eps for under 80$?

Why is this discussion getting off the track of Newer Saturday Schedule and talking about the cost of purchasing DVD's I believe you should start another discussion about the cost of DVD's and get back to the topic at hand.

I believe the saturday schedule is okay for now but why are they showing the previous episode along with the new episode of Bleach. I watch them both anyway. But I believe AS could do better. Even Anime onDemand shows more than they do. They have a full complement with Drama, Comedy, Action and SciFi. If you have it check it out they just started Gundam Seed Destiny, Soltry Rei, and Vampire Princess Miyu along with others.

I don't think Right Stuf ever expects to sell much at their normal prices.  Amazon's prices though are typically all over the place, and can fluctuate on a daily basis, so it really depends on what you're talking about.  Sales come and go though, and if you wait long enough you should always be able to find pretty much anything for at least 40% off the MSRP.  I mentioned to you earlier some of the best sale prices I've seen for it, and so I took those opportunities to pick up sets 2 and 3 myself.  Wish now I had grabbed the first one when I saw it for a little cheaper, too.  Right now though, to be fair, I wouldn't at all advise trying to pick it up for the prices that are out there currently cuz they clearly aren't the best, but still, I'll just say it one last time, the basic price Media Blasters set for it is very reasonable.

Don't know, but I'm not the one who first brought up Kenshin in here, I know that. :smileywink: Um, but seriously, start a thread just cuz things go off on a tangent for a little bit?  I think this place has already got enough clutter without my adding any further to it.

Honestly, I wish there was something interesting to talk about with regards to the schedule, but right now, let's face it...  When you only got one premiere episode a week, there's not much to discuss.  But yes, thank goodness for Anime on Demand... and DVDs. :smileyhappy: At least there's always other ways to fill the void, even if AS doesn't want to.  At this point, I'd be thrilled if they just picked up one new show... just one new show this year.  Of course they're giving some indications with the bumps that they might, but I still have major doubts about that.  New FMA show is probably the only thing with a serious chance of them getting, but we'll see I guess.

Blood+'s rights are almost certainly either due to expire any time now or already have expired. It began in March of 2007. That's 2 years, which is a pretty standard contract when it comes to the anime around here.

Which also explains why it hasn't been a part of the Saturday anime mega-block since it began in November, because it never would have been able to run through before needing to be pulled off the air.
