Thanks for all of the suggestions.  So I can't respond about all of the shows you guys mention, but I thought I would make a rare appearance on the boards to talk about a couple of these...

I did try to get Elfen Lied, but as some of you guessed, it would have been cut to shreads by our Standards department.  So I decided to pass on it, after a bit of a fight... In the end, I think most of the story would have been lost in the editing, unfortunately.  I'm a big fan of Elfen Lied - I watched the whole series in an all nighter without intending to... I just couldn't turn it off.

Gantz is pretty much the same story - It required so many edits that I decided to pass.

We also tried for Samurai 7, but were outbid by IFC.  Sad, but true.

There is a lot that goes into making the decision on which shows are appropriate for our air.  To settle a couple of debates, and attempt to defend my honor - I don't only pick up what I like, and I don't have a problem with fan service.  However, if the fan service in a show is more important than the plot, it won't make it onto our air... We're looking for great storytelling, primarily.  And action is also important... generally, dramatic shows won't work.  I've had to pass on shows that I personally enjoy - like Gankutsuou - because, although it's beautiful and fascinating, it's a slower moving, dramatic piece. 

I know it's blasphemous, but I don't like all of the shows that we have on the air right now - although I am a fan of most (and I'm not going to tell you which ones I don't like).  It really is important to me that enough Williams St people are on board with a show that we're considering - if none of us like it, then we can't expect people to tune in.  It's the same with comedy - if people don't crowd around the tv when new episodes come in, then there's something wrong.  But sometimes I get outvoted!

You'll notice I'm not covering every show that you've mentioned, and that's because as much as I love to give my opinion, I'm just not allowed to talk about them all... for a lot of reasons.

But, truly, thanks for the suggestions - it's good to know what you guys are talking about and interested in.

thanks for the input. Well, at least we know you guys try to get popular shows   And I'm excited how E7's going to be since it's been a while since AS has gotten an exclusive mecha.

But I guess that also means there's no chance that you'll get Elfen Lied any time soon

Well said...i always wondered how Comedy Central can get away with putting pretty much anything they wanted on air (in primetime), whereas AS would have to edit the crap outta a show just to get it to play in a past midnite timeslot...it must be the affiliation with Cartoon Network (and the fact that the channel is generally geared towards a younger age bracket than CC).


edit: could a possible all AS network change this? (allow for less edits or none at all?)

You're right, as long as we're on a kid's network, it's going to be kind of hard... we still have a lot of kids tuning it despite all of the warnings we put up.  However, we're slowly pushing the limits... as people become more aware of adult swim, and less kids tune in, we can get away with more than we used to.  A good example is Inuyasha - the earlier episodes required more edits than the episodes we're getting in now.  And we're able to air things with a TV-MA rating now, which was not a possibility when we started.

Yes, we will definitely have other new series come through this year.  But I can't tell you which ones we're working on, unfortunately!

What's up with the time constraints for the anime? I notice that in recent years the anime themes and commercial bumpers have started being shortened/omitted. Is that how you get the tapes in nowaday or is this just for sponsorship for the network?

Well, think about it. As nice as it would be for [as] to air every intro and bump they had, the shows would take longer to air and would probably fit somewhere between the half hour and hour long bracket. So they cut them down to fit in a half hour and stick commercials in.

but they used to do it and it was fine and now Toonami does it and it works for them

We had to edit the Eureka 7 open because of content - there's a naked lady in the original open.  But, generally we edit the opens / closes for time.  I think it's far better than speeding up the show or editing show content - we just can't run anything longer than 23 minutes in a 1/2 hour block, and most Japanese shows come in around 25 or 26 minutes.  The amount of ad time is standard, and not my decision at all.  Plus, if we tried to cut ad time, we wouldn't be able to afford the shows in the first place!

It's all about what TV viewers expect from their shows and how the TV networks can stay in business.  Anime has always been a half-hour field, and viewers have come to accept it as that.  TV networks cut anime for censorship of certain scenes and to give them enough time to show their commericials (which help the networks stay in business).  Everyone has to do this because money is important.
