I'd argue that the faction specific weapons being ridiculously unbalanced ruined it.
Heavy weapons:
Vanu get the Lasher, highly inaccurate even at 10 feet, minimal damage (got nerfed over and over due to whining on the other faction's part).
NC got the the Jackhammer, which could kill you in about 1-2 seconds at 10 feet range.
And finally, the most rigged gun in the game, TR got the minigun, which at 10 feet would have you dead in 2 seconds tops AND was highly accurate over long ranges. In fact, I've seen many a minigun wielding TR kill a BFR solo.
MAXes:
Vanu got a ridiculously slow projectile that locks on for AA, a negligently powerful laser for AI, and a slow, extremely inaccurate projectile for AV. Oh, and jumpjets, woo?
NC get homing rockets that don't need lock after the first one fires locked for AA, another #### shotgun for AI, and a homing missile for AV. And a shield that takes punishment with a relatively minimal sacrifice in fire rate (compared to getting blown up immediately and dying).
And finally, look who is most rigged again, the TR get a flak gun that doesn't need a lock for AA (yes, no fire and forget, but with no warning it's easier to get surprise kills), another damned minigun for AI, and the biggest BS weapon in the entire game, the Pounder for AV. The pounder spams grenades in an arc at a target with extreme accuracy and can either be set to explode on impact, or to go off after 2 seconds allowing the bouncing of ordinance around corners. Not only does it kill vehicles extremely fast even at range, it is the ultimate hallway holder. Plan to kill him with a decimator? Good luck getting the shot off before you're dead. Finally, they get two different ways to increase firing speed, as if the Pounder didn't decimate your team enough as is.
The tanks were mostly balanced, and well, the BFRs continued the tradition of imabalance.
But really, BFRs only brought to focus just how uneven things were.
