The Elder Scrolls MMO

[ Edited ]

ZeniMax Online Studios and Bethesda will officially announce Elder Scrolls Online in May 2012. The game will take place in Morrowind, Cyrodiil, and Skyrim during the time of the 2nd era which lasted for 896 years. Events in the MMO are said to fallow the timeline per-established  in the 2nd era such as the rise of Talos/tiber septum. (some events of the 2nd era)

The events of Elder Scrolls Skyrim took place during the 4th era into it's 200th year. The Third era lasted 433 years so that means that this game will take place over 1000 years ago from the events of Skyrim.

I wonder how it will look. I doubt anything like the current games. Possibly like 3rd person view wow style.

Yeah, that article sites the same exact news story who uses an "anonymous insider" as a source.

I still don't buy it.

I'm in same boat, it seems unlikely to me. Bethesda has said in the past they don't have any interest in a TES MMO, it would detract from the experience and what TES is all about. On that I agree.

But money is money, we'll see in a few months I guess.

Right now, there are way too many news articles and not enough denial from Bethesda for this to be "made up".

Rumors of an "Elder Scrolls" themed MMO has been floating around for some time, and recent job postings reflect Bethesda's interest in producing such a game. But have many assumed it's for a "Fallout" MMO instead; Bethesda recently engaged in a legal battle with Interplay, the original developer and publisher of "Fallout," who was interested in creating a related MMO themselves.

Bethesda IS interested in making an MMO. Proof of that is in their attempt at the Fallout MMO. All they have left is TES.

So an adult playing video games means that they have peter pan syndrome :smileyindifferent:

I doubt this highly. Todd Howard said he's not interested in MMOs in this article here:

http://www.joystiq.com/2011/08/31/todd-howard-on-skyrims-worthwhi
le-glitches-mmos-and-when-big-i/

On top of that there would be no modding support...

I'd be interested if it happened, but I'd prefer TES to remain the way it has been over building an MMO.

That was made before Skyrim even came out. However a lot of stuff has changed since then even talks of a Fallout mmo.

Skyrim only came out a few months later, they were already nearly done with development when that interview took place.

I'm not really sure what you're talking about with the Fallout MMO. Bethesda secured the rights to one after Interplay failed to do much of anything for years, but that doesn't mean Bethesda will suddenly decide to develop one. And even if they did that would be even more reason for there "not" to be a TES MMO, as competing with yourself is generally not a good business practice.

There was an article on gameinformer about it a while ago that bethesda was looking for mmo staff after securing the rights for the fallout franchise. It's somewhat a different demographic as not everyone who likes Elder Scrolls likes Fallout and vice versa, so it's not like they are competing against themselves. Blizzard has out a few successful games and they aren't having any problems.

Commence the jerking!

Looks like it's being developed by a different studio than the usual TES team, which I guess explains Todd Howard's frequent comments over not wanting to do an MMO.

I'll wait to see more info, but right now I'm really not interested. Take away the open world/sandbox fun and TES is a generic fantasy setting, which there are plenty MMOs of as it is. They are going to need to do something really new and exciting to make this work long term in my opinion...

They could still go the GW route and have no monthly fee, but that's fairly unlikely I suppose.
