Soundtracks/scores

I saw the movie Drive on Friday night, and when I got home I immediately downloaded the soundtrack, which is rare for me. Most movie soundtracks don't really make much of and impression on me, but this one was very integral to the tone of the movie, and on top of that one of the songs has been playing on replay in my head ever since.

What soundtracks do you guys think hold up to listening outside of the context of the movie? For me it's basically:
Drive
Paprika
Tron Legacy
Akira
I think There Will be Blood would work, but i don't actually own that one so I'm not sure.
Oh, and sometimes I'll put on the Lord of the Rings music while I'm studying so it feels more like an adventure

Thomas Newman -- Road to Perdition

Nick Cave & Warren Ellis -- The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford

Max Richter -- Waltz With Bashir

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross -- The Social Network (too lazy to link)

Jon Brion -- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (too lazy to link)

Joe Hisaishi is great too.

Do you smell that?

The music in The Social Network is pretty great. I haven't seen Girl with the Dragon Tattoo yet, but I like the version of "Immigrant Song" he did for that one quite a bit.

Soundtracks I like... hmm, I may lose some cred here..

Clerks

Mallrats

The Muppet Movie

The Ten

Judgement Night

An Ecclectic Mix
A (Mostly) Underground Hip Hop Mix
I made these as a better way to explain to people what kind of music I like but I suppose you could use LastFM if you wanted to cheapen it.
When I make music... my mission statement is to be the Tim Kinsella of Hip Hop, the Al Burian of Singer/Songwriters, and the Dose One of punk rock!
I used to have 500 cds now i have none,
but when it comes to vinyl, my Fugazi weighs a ton...

my favorites....

castle in the sky, princess mononoke, nausicaä
joe hisaishi is quite amazing

most morricone scores (especially the good, the bad, & the ugly, death rides a horse, & once upon a time in the west) are top notch

rosemary's baby
cowboy bebop movie
eva rebuild 1.0 and 2.0 [a lot of themes from the series were improved upon + a few amazing new songs]
a clockwork orange

& i agree w/ pmm: i love the muppet movie soundtrack

Amelie
The Good, The Bad & the Ugly
Dancer in the Dark
Little Miss Sunshine
Cowboy Bebop
(the movie, since I assume we're excluding TV series)
Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Blade Runner
(the Vangelis score)

I'll include RahXephon: Pluralitas Concentio, though I think most of the movie music is also on the 3 OSTs for the TV series. I'm not fond of the movie, kinda like I'm not fond of the Escaflowne movie compared to the series—but anyway, that's a different topic.

Also: The requiem from Akira is one of my favorite songs by anyone.

Edit: Okay, so maybe Dancer in the Dark is kind of a ringer since the movie was pretty much a musical. But I'm listing it anyway. It counts, dammit.

Oh yeah, Morricone's got the good stuff. I actually hadn't seen The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly until a few years back, and I was kind of amazed how many times it uses that one musical motif.

We can include TV Series if there are any particularly good ones out there. I guess I'm a fan of the FLCL soundtracks, but I don't really count them since they're mostly songs that exist outside the context of the show.

In that case: I love the Cowboy Bebop series soundtrack(s).

Wolf's Rain has a lovely soundtrack. And I like a lot of the Earth Girl Arjuna soundtracks.

I guess I could answer "TV series" with, "pick a Yoko Kanno anime soundtrack."

most of morricone's scores have one or two main themes that are present in most of the pieces. doesn't really get boring, somehow.

i second wolf's rain...and that includes the 50+ pieces that didn't get released on the soundtracks.
and bebop, of course.

i love trigun's music, too. tsuneo imahori is an amazing composer and guitarist (he also plays on most yoko kanno/seatbelts stuff, too).

Yeah, I just saw Drive recently and it's soundtrack was the first one in awhile that I can remember sticking with me.

Do they have a download of those pieces that didn't get released officially? I remember a ton of tracks I wanted to listen to that weren't on the albums.

Oh if we're allowed to list TV shows, I've always loved the soundtrack to Home Movies.

I'm also with PMM on Clerks and Mallrats having great soundtracks.

^^ LOVE that song off that soundtrack. Also, I completely agree -- when I saw the movie the 1st time it didn't do much for me but I knew by the pacing & music I had to see it again & it clicked then.

Other soundtracks:

Ocean's 12

Lost In Translation(musta played like 2 CDs of this til they burned up)

Pulp Fiction

Kill Bill

Spawn -- this I can't rec'd enough. 15 yrs on & it still kicks ass.

Matrix soundtrack -- still awesome.

Anime:

GITS -- SAC

FMA(original)

Ravemaster

DBZ

Morricone's work for Sergio Leone is haunting.

Esp. the stuff from Once...In America -- the ominous nature of the soundtrack still gives me chills. The harmonica rendition from Once...the West is also crazy. That man created some of the most iconic music of all time in cinema.
