The Jazz and Blues Discussion Thread

[ Edited ]
"the coolest, freest, and yet deepest music humans have ever made." -Quite possibly.

"The greatest, and yet least appreciated genre of music today among the general public." -Definitely.

"The best music ever made by black people." -I think so.

"Jazz is awesome. Except for Kenny G. That guy's music is trash." -Yes!

Who are some of your favorite Jazz/ Blues musicians? What are some of your favorite jazz songs? Discuss it here.

Blues rules.

Blues musicians pretty much solo the entire time they play.....and that is funkazing.

My dad plays a mean harmonica and plays in some regional bands and stuff.  He rocks, and has brought blues into a whole different light for me.  I also agree that it is much underated.

Some of my favorites of the moment are John Mclaughlin[guitarist], THe Bad Plus[Hard Bop, Jazz Trio w/ Piano, bass, and drums], and Brad Mehldau[piano].

I think i've said this a million times and ill say it again, McLaughlin is one of the greatest, if not greatest, guitarists alive. He can do straight ahead jazz, hard bop, fusion, indian music, flamenco, basically anything, and he does it with unsurpassed technical ability and style. The Bad Plus is a really fun group that ive gotton into the past year. At times they can be totally chatoic, and at other times they'll play some of the most beautiful melodies. They also do incredibly interesting covers of works by Aphex Twin, Blondie, Black Sabbath, Nirvana and The Pixies. And Brad Mehldau, i dunno, he's just amazing. being a piano player myself i'm nothing short of impressed by his choice of notes and rhythms, definetly one of the most talented jazz pianists to surface in recent years.

Jazz is amazing. I'm listening to a little Duke Ellington right now.

As for the Blues, that's great too. Howlin' Wolf, Leadbelly, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Eric Clapton... I could just go on and on...

Blues kicks **bleep**! I'm getting a harmonica soon, too.

And your dad sounds awesome, unlike Bobby Brown.

I don't know if he's the greatest guitar player ever, but he's one of the best.

New Jersey or New York has it's own Smooth Jazz station. I listen to it sometimes when I go through there. It's too bad that the station doesn't say who made the songs sometimes. I'd buy some of the CD's if I knew who made the song...

You've NEVER heard of Coltrane or Miles Davis?! They're two of the best jazz artists since... ever.
But don't sweat it, I'm just getting into Blues myself. Speaking of which, can anyone recomend some good blues artists to me? I'm already somewhat aquainted with Muddy Waters, but other than that, I got nothin'

psh, i wouldnt sell old john short. sure there are a bunch of other great guitarists out there, but i think dont think any of them come close to accomplishing as much musically as john mclaughlin has in his carrer.

Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Evans, Hancock, Corea, Brubeck, all classics, all great. I've been listening to a lot of Mingus' work for the first time lately and am loving it. But as much as i love these guys i know there have to be other performers out there now who are creating new, fresher sounds, anyone know any good modern jazz artists?

Heh.. you're pretty awesome.  Since I said nothing bad, but because I ragged on you in another thread.. like once.. you're acting like a child.  I'm jsut saying it's odd you haven't heard of soe of the most famous jazz musicians.. and that you should start with that list.
