I enjoy the Blues, but I have a real love for jazz.  Obviously the main cats like Miles, Coltrane, Monk, Ray Brown and "Bird" top the list... but some really great living jazz artists are Brad Mehldau, Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti, John Scofield.... blah blah blah  I feel like I'm just making a list here... you get the idea.

Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas- only I don't exactly know what they are! However, somebody killed something; that is clear, at any rate.

Word, scofield is great. i saw him a little while back when he was on tour for his new album "uberjam", great show. Bill Frissell and Pat Metheny are two other phenomenal jazz guitarists.

This is true, Jazz & Blues are a truly 100% American artform. I just recently picked up an album by Madeleine Peyroux. She has a wonderful Billy Holliday-esque voice. I'm also an uber-fan of Jamie Cullum. I really wish he'd come out with a new CD, I've worn Twentysomething completely ragged.

agreed.

I saw Sco a few times.  The first time was the best though.  We (my husband/then boyfriend and I) saw him play at a restaurant/jazz club right after "A Go Go" was released.  We were sitting at a table that surrounded the stage, his guitar was literally in my face for some of the show... amazing.

Haden and Methany did an album together, "Beyond the Missouri Sky" that is so relaxed and beautiful in its simplicity... one of my favorite, quiet rainy morning albums for sure.

I keep hearing this comparison, but from the few tracks I've heard, I really don't get the comparison.  She sounds great though, I've been meaning to pick that album up for some time.

Heh.. you're pretty awesome. Since I said nothing bad, but because I ragged on you in another thread.. like once.. you're acting like a child. I'm jsut saying it's odd you haven't heard of soe of the most famous jazz musicians.. and that you should start with that list.
Calm down, boy.

I forgot about that other kid. And I told you to shut up because your being obnoxious. Don't you think "ragging" on someone is childish?

And stop calling me "boy" and "child". I'm not that young.

well, that's probably a good thing. It means that she has a sound all her own. Nobody wants to be known as 'that singer who sounds like Billie Holiday' :smileyhappy:

I'm being obnoxious? Hm.  Missed that.

The 'dear' 'lovey' 'boy' thing is a force of habit.  It can't be helped.

Meh.. I'm not going to argue with you.. and if you're lookig for school shoes.  You're apparently young.

But that's it for me.

Very true.  :smileyhappy:

Lady Day is one of my favorite female vocalists... ever, so I may be less inclined to agree with comparisons.  Besides, I think Peyroux has a gorgeous voice and that to compare her to someone so dear in the musical community is really a disservice.  People like to label, and it would be a shame to have her similarities to someone so huge define her as an artist when she is CLEARLY doing her own thing.

Somehow it seems to fill my head with ideas- only I don't exactly know what they are! However, somebody killed something; that is clear, at any rate.

not really.  I mean smooth jazz or cool jazz is pretty mellow, but they are not the only types of jazz.
