I walked into the local gay bar on Thursday night, and this song was in fact blasting on the sound system...

I liked The Smiths before I noticed anything "gay" about them though, FWIW... and, even now, that aspect of the band (more specifically, Morrissey) has little to nothing to do with why I like them, but they r prity gay.

PS: I can only imagine this thread wuz designed 2 troll me, but it will never work.

I've heard that Oscillate Wildly gets played on The Weather Channel sometimes, haha.

i may check out the smiths again one of these days if i'm in the mood. i never really disliked the music, it's just that morrissey's voice ruins them for me. i just can't stand his voice.

I can see why it might turn people off... Some people love him, some people hate him.

I've only recently been warming up to his post-90's solo work, even.... Used to hate it (and still think You Are The Quarry is a completely #### album).

I love The Smiths for the music as much as anything though. Johnny Marr is ridik. If everything they'd done had been instrumental, I'd still have a total #### for them.

If The Smiths were just instrumental or teamed up with a different lead, I would love them. Morissey's lyrics are godawful - it's bad beat poetry that he manages to whine his way through.

Well, I can't say I agree with you, but that's okay with me. I actually like his lyrics though. Most of them weren't even his per se (a lot of Smiths lyrics were inspired by or lifted [at times almost verbatim] from other people's writing).

For the sake of discussion and my own curiosity, care to cite speciffic examples of lyrics you think were t0tz gay/"the worst"? The Smiths have a ridick number of songs for being so short-lived.

Just so we're clear, I don't think they're "totz gay". I know its not always used to mean a derogatory reference, but it's not something I feel comfortable using.

It's a little hard to explain, but my beef is that he creams as many words into a lyrical phrase as possible. That's why I made the bad beat poet comment - his lyrics lack any natural rhythm.

Srsly - I never listened to them till like 05 or 06 then I bought the 'singles' CD & listened to it. Within a month I had destroyed the CD from playing it so much.

They're #### brilliant. To this date the biggest travesty besides a Guns n' Roses(the REAL Guns n' Roses) reunion is a #### Smiths reunion. And its because Morrissey is an a/nal little spitfuuuuuudge. One of the reasons he's so talented & hilarious but also why he can be a #### sometimes.

On the contrary, I sit in the basement blasting "The Queen is Dead" on a continuous loop while staring at a map of Manchester with push pins.

Seriously, though, his lyrics have always driven me ####. My friend is a huge fan and he had me read the lyrics once without the music and it had a rhythm that seemed to clash when the instrumentals were backing it up. Poetry is what it is - it's meant to be spoken and has a cadence that, while not the same as everyday conversation, utilizes natural voice patterns to place emphasis at certain points. Sung words have a completely different cadence pattern. Trying to sing poetry makes it forced.
