What was/were your favorite album(s) this week?

My previous attempt at "GMD" failed to bring any real activity, so here's another dumb list thread.

Write a mini-essay on the album and why it was your favorite for a WHOLE WEEK if you feel up to it. I guarantee you I will read it.

Check my wantlist! I am not looking to make trades from my collection, but I am happy to swap tapes of anything in my collection for (almost) anything in my wantlist. Get in touch!

i was gonna make a thread like this, but with all of the albums i listened to this week, because i listened to a lot of albums this week.

1. Jay-Z & Kanye West "Watch The Throne"

the only songs i didnt like from this album were Lift Off, Illest Motherf*cker Alive, H.A.M. and Why I Love You. other than that, this is a pretty solid album. lyrically this album could have been much better, even by Kanye's and Jay's standards. but the production and the concepts is what makes this album so listenable to me... well most of it anyway. 7/10

2. Royce Da 5'9" "Success Is Certain"

Hooks is this album's biggest problem. i dont want to call it a bad album though, because Royce Da 5'9" really went in on this one for the verses. but sometimes the hooks were just kind of corny, like Writer's Block and Merry Go Round. other songs didnt feel like it belonged on the album. My Own Planet is a great song, but it doesnt feel like a Royce song. but it's still a pretty good song. and other than a few rough points, its still pretty solid. 7/10

3. Curren$y & The Alchemist "Covert Coup"

one word can describe this album... "smooth". definitely a good album to just sit back and chill to or bump in the car. great guest features, its good to hear Prodigy back on his BS again. i just started getting into Curren$y, but production wise i think this album is my favorite release from him so far. come December 31, i'm definitely going to remember this one. 9/10

4. Planet Asia "Crack Belt Theatre"

Planet Asia is slowly becoming one of my favorite west coast artists, and after hearing Pain Language and his General Monks mixtape, i had to hear more from him. this album is really good, but it does have some rough points. the first song on the album for example, the sample was dope, but the hook was just WAY too long. and some of the songs dont go past 1:30 long, so sometimes that gets annoying. but other than that, i can honestly say i really enjoyed this project. 8/10

5. Timbo King "From Babylon To Timbuk2"

anyone who's a Wu-Tang fan like me has been anticipating this album for a very long time. its a very VERY good album, but that doesnt mean it doesnt have a few disappointments here and there. the first song, again, sounds like a total mess. it definitely wouldnt hurt to re-record that track before releasing it. other than that, Timbo King goes in on pretty much every song. RZA is supposed to be featured on Wardance, but all he does is scream and shout Wu-Tang and stuff in the background, he doesnt spit a verse... hell he didnt even produce the track, those background vocals were the only thing he contributed to the album. R.A. The Rugged Man sounds out of place on High Ranking. but Timbo King basically does a pretty good job on every track. dope beats, dope rhymes... what more could you want? 8/10

6. Hassaan Mackey & Apollo Brown "Daily Bread"

this was really everything and more that i would expect from an Apollo Brown release. soulful chopped samples, hard hitting drums, neck breaking beats. Hassaan Mackey really delivers too. not a lot of guest features which i really like. sometimes rap albums are overloaded with guest features and it just gets ridiculous. this one only has 2, so its mostly just Hassaan and Apollo every track. i dont really have anything bad to say about this album, one of my favorites so far this year. 9/10

**beast**, I'm not even familiar with several of those artists... which shows how little exposure I've had.

I guess my favorites, the ones I've spun the most this week, or "got the most out of" would be...

Fleshtones - Roman Gods

It's just simple, catchy, fun, slightly-modernized Garage Rock... very few genuinely weak or "annoying" moments, though "Ride Your Pony" does wear thin pretty fast. The rest of the cuts are almost all excellent, even if there's nothing terribly "DEEP" about it (who said there needs to be? :smileytongue: ). Recommended for a dumb, drunk party with you close friends, or simply making mundane activities a bit less depressing... 8/10 [good idea to rate them, btw].

Highlights: The Dreg, I've Gotta Change My Life, Hope Come Back.

Morrissey - Vauxhall And I

Good music for sad (in more ways than one, haha) people like moi. It really is one of his strongest releases from the period between the start of of his solo career in the late 80's up to the point that he started to **beast** and I stopped paying attention in the mid-to-late 90's. The production is very occasionally irksome, and there are a couple of less-than-perfect tracks here, but there's only one real dud for me ("Lifeguard Sleeping, Girl Drowning")... Spring-Heeled Jim loses steam after many repeat listens. The rest are either extremely good or good enough for me to come to terms with their weaknesses. This albums' worst offense is occasionally being a bit too "twee" for its own good ("The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get"). 8/10.

Highlights: Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself, Billy BuddI Am Hated For Loving.

For about a month or so now Nuclear Winter Volume 2 is about the only thing I care to listen to, I swear, if all rasdio rap was as real as Sole, I would **beast** love it... the Nuclear Winter series has made me realize that commercial beats aren't that bad... it's just the pointless, meaningless raps that make them seem that way.

1. Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder

a nice change of pace from the normal constraints of "witch house", listened to it a few times before growing slightly tired of it. the water sounds implemented in the tracks give it a natural feel, however, i just can't seem to get into this type of music.

2. Tristan Tzara - everything they've done

really furious classically-based screamo, beautiful for a night like this where everyone around me needs to shove a red-hot rod up their tight **beast** so they cauterize it and no more bullsh¡t can come spewing out of their makeshift mouths.

3. Born Gold - Bodysongs

my friends in Gobble Gobble changed their name and are putting out this album on the 20th of September....extremely pure electropop, the hooks on this album are unlike anything Peter Pan has ever seen before. i find myself singing or humming the songs every other hour, which makes me listen to the album again, which in turn further embeds the hooks in mah brain. IT IS AMAZE. it's also the #1 seller on Insound, taking over PANDA BEAR. YEAH. They're that **beast** catchy.

I've listened to the rebuild of evangelion soundtracks all week and all weekend. i rewatched the DVDs monday and i've been semi-obsessed ever since. the redone pieces from the movies are badass...nice to hear newer versions as the recordings from the series sound kinda dated.

don't know if i'll do this all week but:

This week my favorite album is the album Rain Dogs by Tom Waits. He has one of the most unique, derangely beautiful voices that i've ever heard. it's gritty and smoky and sometimes vaudevillian. couple that with some of the most colorful and creativly insane lyrics from any artist in any gengre. in my opinion, Rain Dogs is the album were he hit his musical perfection. He's always been one of my favorite singer/song writters and Rain Dogs is by far my favorite amongst hs works. I heard he might finally be getting inducted to the rock-n-roll hall of fame which would be awesome. hopefully that exposure will widen his audience because i feel that he's been over looked by a lot of people. anyway, Clap Hands is my favorite song on the album....that is all

Antlers - S/T

Math-rock from Richmond, Virginia. i've been listening to nothing but Richmond bands to prepare me for Best Friend's Day. I highly recommend this album and band for those into the genre.

1. Watch The Throne - Yeah, some of the songs have heavy beats...you know some that actually help the song out...well, just mainly Murder to Excellence...that's my bread and butter for the album. Swizz did a nice job with the "Murder" instrumental, and Symbolic One, a guy I've never heard of before I bought the CD, also did a nice job with his "Excellence" instrumental, making it complement Swizz's aforementioned instrumental. I guess That's all I can really say about the CD...it's good for the most part, I just keep listening to that one song over and over, but I will admit some could have been better, like some of the even numbered tracks, though concerning the Deluxe edition I like Primetime and The Joy...so it's not all that bad...

2. A Kid Named Cudi - Yeah, it's been out for 3 years now...but I just recently listened to it, and it's amazing, one of Cudi's best, but then again I may be biased seeing that I do enjoy most of his songs. But my favorites from it are "Down & Out" using that "Chonkyfire" instrumental from OutKast, "Man on the Moon (The Anthem)", and "Embrace the Martian" are in my top three songs for this mixtape. Almost makes me sad in light of him dropping A Man Named Scott, but it's for the better so he can concentrate on his band's album and his Man on the Moon III.

Yeah, most of those descriptions were just pointless rambling...

I am not really digging the Jay-Z Kanye thing. I was bored.

My pick for the album of the week: "Slave Ambient" by The War On Drugs. I loved their EP last year and now it seems like everyone else is starting to love this band as well. It's been a while since someone's made the guitar sound so good.

I still can't say I like Xiu Xiu... and I don't care for his parts on the opening track, but so far so good other than that...

I should add that the 2x LP version is the one that came out on my birthday... Good reason to waste more money on the vinyl version if I ever get around to it. :smileyvery-happy:

this week... actually this whole month... it's siamese dream by smashing pumpkins. it's an album that holds a lot of positive memories for me. from the first track to the last, there is a memory associated with it that makes me incredibly happy. i started listening to it right before i saw this thread. ha! anyways, i'll post about a few of the songs.

cherub rock is playing right now. blue used to sing this song all the time. he'd sit with his bass and just sing. and you know the part where it says, "tell me all of your secrets, cannot help but believe this is true"? he used to grab me and sing it in my ear. i love it when he sings to me.

quiet - me and blue used to drive around in his old 280 zx, with the t tops off with this blasting and sing it as loud as we could.

today - blue and i got together sept. 3rd 1993. we met in pittsburgh. he lived out there for a while, but he went back to nj in october. i went out to visit him in november of that year. i got off the train and as i was coming up the escalator, all i saw was balloons. then i saw blue standing there, hands full of balloons. i jumped on him and hugged him. balloons went everywhere. lol. we went out to the car, got in and today came on. now, every time i hear it, i cry. happy tears, but yea. i cry every time.

hummer- this song came on as the train pulled away from the station the first time i went back to pittsburgh. i cried and cried and cried. then i opened my backpack and saw that blue had put his jacket inside. it smelled like him. i slept with it every night until we were together again.

sweet sweet - he used to walk around the apartment, late at night, singing this to our daughter, trying to get her to sleep.

luna - blue used to sing it to me all the time. did i mention how much i like it when he sings to me?

so yea, for me, this album is just... a reminder of how lucky i am. :smileyhappy:

I've been listening to both of the Crystal Castles albums quite a bit the past few days. I have to take the qualifying exam for my Ph.D program in November, so I've been trying to put myself into study mode. Crystal Castles works well as study music for me because it's really energetic and propulsive, but the lyrics aren't super important or even intelligible, which makes it less distracting.
The original and best.

Bronze Nazareth "School For The Blindman"

another dope Wu-Tang release. guest spots include The Wisemen, Canibus, Killah Priest, LA The Darkman, Willie The Kid, Raekwon, Inspectah Deck, Masta Killa and a LOT of dope verses from The RZA. the entire album was produced by Bronze Nazareth himself. I've always been a huge fan of his production style, and this album wasnt any different. great soulful beats, it had a little bit of the oriental sound on the song "Fresh From The Morgue", and i would say Bronze Nazareth stepped his game up lyrically for this project. he sounded really good throughout the whole thing. i wish more Wu members and affiliates made appearances, but he did a pretty good job of picking artists that fit his production style. plus, i'm a huge Canibus fan. i really hope to hear more Wu-Tang/Canibus collabs. overall though, i'm loving this album front to back. definitely one of my favorites this year. 9/10
