I'll get another one up when I get time to record some more songs, just having one song, no matter how many people said it was good, just felt wrong.

I know what you mean. I refuse to put anything on the internet until I get a better tone (playing is alright, but the tone is just godawful).

I've recently started learning the Sarabande and Gavotte I and II of Bach's 6th Cello suite in D major.
Double stops are teh **bleep**. But it keeps me playing...so that's good.

Also playing in a symphonic orchestra this month again.  Yay for learning real symphonic literature!!
Mendelssohn rocks.

Actually I'm a violist.

I really want to start working on the Walton viola concerto...but I'm always so tired after working all day.
But playing Bach keeps the technique there and keeps my hands from becoming useless.

ah viola :smileywink:   i know what you mean. i do my best to keep my hands from being worthless, and its a real pain in the **bleep** for me because i didnt pick up an instruement until i was about 20, so  my hands were already set in their ways.  Random question, but im curious, is there much solo viola music?

**bleep** yeah, man.
sounds all right to me.
Me, I've become a big fan of shostakovich lately, of a lot of Russian music set in minor key, actually.  I'll be lucky if I don't get suicidally depressed from all the **bleep** I'm playing this year. :smileyvery-happy:
I'm looking to finish up the Shosty violin concerto in A minor, which is a huge piece of work; right now I'm working on the passacaglia and the preceding mvmt., the scherzo.   I'm playing the "Nocturne" (- Midori... aint me.  eh- actually, my version of this is a lot more angry.  I'm not exactly in love with Midori.) in a recital this Sunday.  very creepy stuff.
I'm also working on Prokofiev's first violin sonata... f minor.  God, I love it.
Aside from that, a Bach sonata for violin and harpsichord (also f min.).  Technically pretty basic, but I've never done anything w/ harpsichord before; it'll be a treat.

I don't have any recordings of me playing, but I may get one soon.

haha thank you. sadly. my piano teacher would beg to differ
Russian music in the early mid 20th century is just about as good as it gets. shostakovich, rachmaninoff, Profokfiev, Stravinskey...it seriously as good as it gets. **bleep** those western european guys, minus Bartok :smileyhappy: id love to hear a recroding of you playing, so you had better hook it up.

*sigh*.. I could, but seriously, I don't know anything about recording music.  I'd rather just wait for Sunday.   The last two times I tried to get any sounds that come out of my violin on a computer, they were either just not there, or blotchy.   Eh.. I might get impatient.  We'll see.

It depends on which era you're thinking of.

In the Baroque era, there was a  lot of solo viola literature.  Telemann wrote some great stuff for the instrument as well as Hummel (or is he classical?  Crap.) and Marais wrote a few things.  During this era there was a lot of good stuff written and the viola was of some importance in a solostic nature.  During the early classical period there was still some great things being written by Stamitz and Dittersdorf...composers that doesn't spring to one's mind automatically when thinking of "classical music".  But in the classical era the viola fell by the way side of solo music and was shuffled back to filling in harmony of music.  Sure there are a few exceptions here and there, but not much in solo music.  There's a ton of great orchestral and ensemble music for it in all of the different eras, but nothing soloistically.

With the Romantic era, there's almost nothing written for solo viola, mostly because the violin was THE instrument to write for, given the brilliance and ease of the instrument.  And there's a ton of reasons why, but I'm digressing...

Towards the end of the romantic era the viola starts to come up again...there is Berlioz's Harold in Italy, which he originally wrote on comission for Paganini but he (paganini) decided he didn't like it so he went and wrote his own..and both are amazing.  Brahms wrote Sonatas for the instrument and they're amazing, but that's more chamber music....

In the 20th century the viola really gets a lot of solo music written specifically for that instrument.  Before now, a lot of the pieces are violin/cello/whatever music transcribed for the viola.  One reason why music was being written more for this instrument is because there were a few famous violists who began to showcase the viola for what a great instrument that it is, namely Lionel Tertis and William Primrose.  Bartok wrote a viola concerto on a commission from Primrose, actually.  And Walton (the concerto I mentioned before) as well.
Twentith century music can sound pretty funky, and that is reflected in viola literature...like Britten's Lachrymae.  And there are a ton of other composers/pieces that orginiate from this era.  There is definitely a lot of music to select from compared to what was, or rather what was not(!) written for the viola in the past 150 years.

But anyway...it all depends on how you look at things.  Music written specifially for the viola or transcribed?  Some people only want to play music specifically written for that instrument becuase transcribed music doesn't always translate nicely.  What a cellist can do with ease on one piece of music may sound harsh and nasty on a viola...which is the exact problem with Bach's 6th cello suite.
I should stop now.

no you should not stop! :smileyhappy: perhaps that is selfish of me to say, but i love discussing classical music, and  i personaly dont know many people who are into that genre of music so i get quite excited when i find someone to talk about it with :smileyhappy:

Funny that you mention Hummell, i just learned about him recently because my piano teacher had me play one of his Scherzo's.

I'll be on the look out for recordings of Bartok's Viola works.  I'm always amazed to find out there is so little music composeed for solo string instruments.  This is proabbly mostly because i am a piano player and so im used to there being so much solo music for my instrument :smileyhappy: still. each instrument has its own voice and personality. so it is still quite hard to believe that there isnt a vast amount of solo music for these instruments.,
