Despite the series doing a good job of creating it's own original storyline, there's very very little left of the source Manga material to base a 3rd season off of. Still, I'm not giving up hope that a 3rd season will be made.

I havent heard anything about another season but I have been tracking Variety regarding any news from Hollywood about the 3D-CG GITS spin off being written...Spielberg was involved...maybe not anymore. To be honest I wish Americans would keep their hands off this property before they screw it up.
The Eden Series and movie was pretty good - very high quality. Maybe Production IG is just waiting for the script of the new GITS is ready.

As much as I would like to see a third season. I think animes are really lost momentum. They certainly have lost their appeal on [as].
I don't know anything about anime in Japan or abroad, but I think most American viewers might of forgotten about Ghost in the Shell. It certainly would need a lot of promotion stateside to get enough viewers.

i did some hardcore researching a couple of months back, and to sum everything up, they will make a 3rd season or atleast something new with GITS, when they finish their eden of the east and other projects, and that was from an IG spokesperson themself.
So we just have to wait till Kenji is done with his other work, and prob a few other people and then we will get something new. I believe that could be in a year or 2 if i had to guess.
but for the movie, i havent heard much, they say its prob in "development hell", or they are doing a revised draft, ive heard both, so we'll know prob next summer more info.

I'm sure the movie will be terrible; not because of how Hollywood normally butchers stuff like this (see: Silent Hill movie), but because of Ghost in the Shell's unique style not appealing to a wide variety of people.
By "unique style," I mean all the talking. I love the series to death, but I'll be the first to admit that there is A LOT of dialogue, with some episodes being nothing but dialogue and discussions. Most episodes had some formula of "first half talking, second half action," and I'm just worried a major movie would cut out most of the dialogue and just make it an action movie.
The only way to really salvage all the dialogue would be to make more of it detective work and less political and existential debates, in order to make the people who aren't familiar with the series happy. Even I, who loves all the dialogue, probably would get bored listening to it for two hours straight, rather than the normal half-hour.

That's great news. I wonder how long it would take Adult Swim to get a license for season 3.
I know that's putting the cart before the horse when they haven't made the episodes yet. But it's been so long since I've seen any new GITS.

"Putting the cart before the horse" doesn't even begin to describe it, as it hasn't even been announced that a season 3 will even be made. That's the whole point of this announcement. Kenji Kamiyama and Production I.G. are gonna introduce *SOMETHING* new, with currently no hints or guarantee that it will have anything to do with GITS.

A while back appx 6mths ago I heard they were going to do a live action movie. However spielberg was supposed to be the one doing it so after terra nova and falling skies you know its probably going to draw maximum vacuum.....

I don't think Adult Swim has the millions of dollars needed to fund Production I.G. for a 3rd season. Remember that Production I.G. provides the highest quality animation in Japan, and just making the first season shattered a new record at it's time for production value.
Not to mention, as I HAVE mentioned above, there's very very little left of the source material to stretch out and base a 3rd season off of.

Sorry to be tardy to this party, but just a clarifying note, Spielberg's production company has purchased the rights to a portion of the GITS franchise, particularly the rights to a live action movie. The final product will resemble the 3D qualities of Tron: Legacy rather than the 3D qualities of Avatar, if you understand my reference to the difference between the two. Although it's far from slating a release date, Spielberg has expressed that if a script does not emerge before 2018, then he will most likely relinquish the rights to the movie.
In regards to your disdain for the American involvement in the project, I think your skepticism is reasonable given the past rocky efforts of the American film industry in the Anime field, but if anyone can step up to the plate on this, it's Spielberg. I'd give it a chance before completely writing it off.

The movie's been in Development Hell since almost immediately after he grabbed the rights to make the movie back in June of 2007...
