It's perfectly ok if you haven't. Even Richard Epcar thinks it's a mess. Not like either of the first two movies take place during Stand Alone Complex anyway.

I think I've seen Innocence at least 5 times now. It still confuses me. ![]()

I never suggested it wasn't. If you and Epcar think it's a mess that's fine, but I happen to like it. Plus, the OP indicated they have seen the first movie so I wondered if they'd seen the second.

You need to know the... complications that Richard had gone through when he was producing the English version. It was a mess.
As for the movie's plot and structure itself, I blame Mamoru Oshii for trying to once again combine 5 random chapters from the manga, most of which do not have any association with each other in the grand scheme of the story line, and expand it into 90 minute film while wasting 15 minutes alone on just showing the scenery while children chant mystically in the background.
To each his own though.

I just saw the second movie tonight and I loved it. The story was kind of thin though - could have been wrapped up in a half hour episode I thought. It was creepy enough in spots and the answer to the case was I thought shocking. I totally enjoyed it.
What's interesting is, the DVD I got doesn't have a dub on it. I had the choice between Japanese 5.1 surround or the 2.0 stereo. Don't know how THAT happened.
Not that I cared, the audio was just fine as it was.
I did notice on more than one occasion that much time was spent on scenery and I never did get the reason for that procession with the kids chanting mystically. It didn't bother me though, because I was enjoying the artwork. Which I guess was the point, who knows?
I'll be watching this again - now that I know what's going on I know I'll pick up on stuff I missed.

Maybe knowing that altered your opinion of the movie. It happens alot with people who read too much.

Let me put it this way: I didn't understand the first movie until I had read the manga, and started to see just what he was trying to accomplish by taking completely random, out of order chapters and stringing them together into a story.

I'm sure there's stuff in the manga that adds to the movies, but I didn't have any trouble understanding what was in them without it. Of course, I have watched both of them no telling how many times...

Yeah, the first series restarts, doesn't it. Good stuff.
