Some of you may have heard me mention this in the past, but thanks to Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, scientists in Japan began working on a prototype for Thermoptic Camoflague that works by bending light around the user, giving them a distorted invisible appearance. Truth be told, they actually have the technology to make it work, but it's far too bulky to put into a practical application right now.
However, they're not the only ones working on such a concept, and the most recent issue of Discover Magazine has an article saying that we're now one step closer to making it a reality.
(However, this article doesn't seem to be aware of the Japanese findings, but at the same time, there is a conceptual difference between bending light and actually cloaking it.)
