Well, there are two episodes that were we see what they do in those situations. For the most part, they're kept in sleep mode overnight though.

Well... they have probes and ports ... you figure it out :smileyhappy:

 

But yeah, usually in sleep-mode it seems.  Or else developing suicidal tendencies ;P

 

Ever notice how the Tachikomas seem rather underimpressively armed and armoured against other mechanized units?  Guess the central hardpoint can mount a heavy weapon, mortar type device or small calibre rotary autocannon (maybe even just a heavy rotary machine gun like a .50 calibre or a 12.x mm).
