Dear Adult Swim,

I just watched Harvey Birdman turn a 47 year old So-Cal lawyer into an AS fan. So if you ever need a PI lawyer, you know who to call!

NOT Harvey, call my Dad!

seriously....call now....

executed flawlessly.

I FREAKING LOVE THIS SHOW.
IMHO, it is the funniest show on [adult swim].
Perfect blend of classic characters, minimalist animation, writing, and voice talent.

REDUCTO IS MY FAVORITE, followed by PHIL KEN SEBBEN, MENTOK, and the bear who occasionally makes a weird noise.

Hey Yermamma,

I got 2 questions. I hope you can answer them as best as you can.

1)  Could you do an episode of Harvey Birdman with 2 Stupid Dogs getting into legal troubles? Like they could be in trouble for pooing on the street or something? They could do something really stupid that gets them in trouble, and Harvey would come to their aid as their lawyer. And possibly, 2 stupid dogs would be under pressure of being put to sleep because they are under speculation of being diseased. Basically I'm just asking if we could ever see them in an episode of Harvey Birdman. I think they have potential to be hilarious.

2) Do you have any advice for people who want to get their cartoon concepts pitched to networks? I talked to SwimBuddah, and he said I would need an agent to pitch to anyone including Adult Swim. Where do most agents hang out?  And I know that Cartoon Network receives pitches for cartoons everyday so it cant be "too" hard. :smileytongue:  Ive been animating 20 min cartoons for a while now based on a series idea ive had. I write them, animate them, voice them, etc. Just don't know how to break into the industry.

P.S. This is not asking for a job at Adult Swim. Just wondering if you had any advice on how to get a cartoon pitched to any network in general.

Lemme start with a couple of things... first, sorry I haven't responded sooner to these latest questions but I've been quite busy with the show

second, thanks again to Goz for taking time to help out around this thread... its good to see that kind of thing:smileyhappy:

So on to some A's for a few Q's:

Conker - 2 Stupid Dogs, while yet a funny show, will probably not be seen in HBAAL anytime soon. I don't think it jives with the show's concept to bring in more modern/recent cartoon characters. That may change in the future, but I wouldn't hold your breath for it.

- Advice for cartoonists: If you've got complete films I'd suggest 2 things... hit the independent animation film circuit and enter as many festivals as you can... find an agent and attend some industry conventions like the San Diego con. Check out AWN.com for some more info. Buddha is absolutely correct that the network will not entertain show pitches from outside sources without some sort of proper legal steps being taken. An agent will know all the right people and places to send your work too if they deem it good enough. At conventions you can schmooze those people in person. I don't know what the market is like right now for new cartoons, but best of luck!

Verpetas - first off, you haven't seen our second season stuff yet... so pleas hold the praise on our crappy job :smileywink: But you asked about story input, and this is what I can tell you. The writers/creators of the show, Oweleen & Richter, are the driving forces and have final approval for everything... the directors (a Director and Asst. Director *me*) storyboard the show out working very closely with the writers. We do get to add story bits or gags here and there but as to scripting or deciding what characters will appear next, thats not our thing. The animators are also encouraged to enhance the scenes wherever they see fit by building off of boarded animation or suggesting a new twist on a gag or add gags where appropriate. A lot of the visual acting is left up to the individual animators and the animators do have close access to the producers and writers. I credit a very talented team of hardworking creative folks and truly incredible voice talents for the show's success. Its really a great gig and I'm just stoked to be here *where's my raise?*

Tenorbassman - First episode of HBAAL was done by J J Sadelmeyer of SNL T.V. Funhouse fame, and none of us have ever worked for him or NBC (although we did get to meet him once... pretty cool)

- I don't know where the Bear came from... for me, I like to think it has something to do with that old somethin' or other Wilford Brimley would say in Hotel Newhampshire about every family needing a bear or having a bear for good luck. I dunno.

- Yes, I did work on that episode of SG with Birdman hosting... I had actually forgotten about working on that... but now the flood gates are open... repressed memories of tweening all those dang wings & feathers!! NOOOooooooo .... to be honest I didn't do a whole lot more than some wing work on his landing, and maybe some other assistant type work. I think that was before the concept of HBAAL was around... whats really funny, is that I actually did the very first rough concept sketch of Harvey when the show open idea was brought to the place where I was working... the pose was already decided, Harv behind the wheel of his sweet ride. I remember thinking wtf is this? That was some years ago, and my drawings weren't all that great (still a young artist) so I didn't see much more Harvey after that. Kinda ironic doncha think?

Canface - DVDs most likely sometime in the future if other sales continue to do well... date unknown

Purple Hippo - I remember Hair Bear Bunch... I think the leader bear makes a few bg appearances in the gallery of some first season episodes already. Guess you'll have to watch them all and find out?

Edie401 - see above note about guest characters

Dogdemonfan - We do slip some things like that in now and again :smileywink: Nothing innapropriate, but stuff funny to us... I'll wait for the new ep's to come out before any beans are spilt.

And to all the thank you's, you're all very welcome... and thanks for your support with the show!!

no problem yermamma, helpin out wherever i can, espically when its something that has peaked my intrest and constantly entertains and informs me.....addictions are an amazing thing *wink* small refrence... great thread, the personal interaction is fantastic and is making me anticipate the new season even more, admiration of the new work shall be forthcomming.....

and another question to help progress the thread........
does the show refrence any "real" legal prefessionals (in other words does anyone ask lawyers questions to help with continuity? or is i just old Matlock re-runs and The Father Dowling Mysteries on VHS?)

just a quick factoid, in Very Personal Injury, the only Superfriends who appear are Apache Chief, Black Vulcan, and Zan from the Wonder Twins, the reasoning  is that they were  created for "The All-New Superfriends Hour," and TANSFH is owned by Hanna-Barberra who we all know is now property of Turner; allowing for the bypass of certain legalities and editorial approval that would be needed from D.C. for any of the other more "famous" superfriends

As far as I know there are no lawyers on retainer to field questions for legal consistency within the show... we do however have a lot of interaction with the lawyers when it comes to them telling us what we can and can't get away with legally within the show :smileywink:

And you're absolutely correct on the Superfriends deal. Characters like Batman, Superman, Wonderwoman, etc... would have to be approved through DC before ever coming close to appearing on a show like Bman. Others, like Black Vulcan (Thunderbolt) and Apache Chief are fair game though since, as you stated, they were created by HB. Good call.

Thanks for thereply man. Oh yeah, if you have to go through DC comics for rights of ant "real" justice league folks, then did you have to have permission for that hillarious bath tub scene with wonderwoman?

Goz- as far as I know all the legal references are somewhat topical... usually spoofing some type of recent court action. But I do think it would be funny to research some old Blue laws that are still in effect and throw the book at some poor old HB character. Maybe the writers will read this thread? Maybe they already have? Who knows? I sure as heck don't :smileywink:

Tenorbassman - thats a good question on Wonder Woman, I had forgotten about her and it was before my time... but, to my recollection we never see her face nor the face of any other current DC Heroes in A Very Personal Injury. I think thats how we got away with it because we'd never do anything to upset the legal department **big grin**

Sunnysidez86 - Don't give up on other INSIDERS joining the fun yet, the boards are relatively young and I think word will spread over time of how much fun it is to have the same kind of interaction from our perspective. I type fast and stay up way too late at night so its no big drain on my personal time to keep up with the boards, but I admit I will go days on end without posting... deadlines can be a pain.

my involvement with ATHF is not really limited to any one specific episode... I assisted on the basic animations used for all the characters (Shake/Frylock/Meatwad/Dr. Weird/Steve) but do not take credit for the animation. I've also assisted on animation on whichever episodes included Mothman, Mc Pee Pants, the killer brownies, and that mold/sponge thingy (I can't believe I don't remember all these character names).

and as for tracers, er, I mean inkers... heh heh, yeah, we poked some good natured fun at the inkers around town when Chasing Amy came out. Its a lil different in animation though from comics. An animation inker is expected to keep line consistancy across many, many moving drawings, where as a comic book inker only has to make it look good once... so generally we give our guys a lil bit more respect than that... not much, but a lil bit.
