I read this thread when you first posted it and enjoyed it a lot.  From then to now, one of your lines really stuck in my head when watching this show:  "As lovable and dedicated and driven as the group was and as unintentionally hilarious as their movies were...they just weren't very talented."  I do agree that though they are talented for their age, in the grand scheme of things they aren't that talented..well, not Brendon and Melissa.  Jason, on the other hand, from time and time again has amazed me on how good of an actor he is and how observant he is on what makes a good film.  He constantly critiques Brendon's scripts and directing, sometimes giving random words of wisdom.  And I mean, really, the next time you see an episode, just see how great of an actor Jason is.  It's funny how someone who isn't too bright in the real life is quite a genius in their fantasy world.

I would certainly hope that Jason finds some other ways to continue acting, because I don't see much of a future for him in anything else.

They are. They now air from 1:15-1:45. You've probably been tuning in at 1:30 and come in at the commercial break.

I just watched this at 5 am.  In fact I got up out of bed to watch it. I've seen it before but it's just awesome.

This show is underrated. Home Movies has way more realistic plots than most of the shows that AS features. Each episode can easily be a situation in someone's life. People who hate this show have got to be crazy. The stuff that goes throughout the plot happens because of the characters lives and doings are based around them.

That was a great episode.

It better not be the episode of the series, I swear.

Excellent thread and post. I have always loved this episode. I think Brendon was granted permission to explore other areas of life when the camera broke. Throughout the final season, Brendon debated whether or not he even wanted to continue making movies. The camera's destruction was somewhat of a realization for him. At least, this is how I interpeted it.

Now that Brendan Small is big buisness, I'd love to see what he would do if he came back to Home Movies.

i believe he will never turn back to the movies, i mean he had a good run.

he made crap movies but had fun doing it.

it wasn't the same love he had for it in the begining,

do you have a wife?

then you know what i mean.

i like the ending of the show, very sad, that's the way i like endings..

Good job Writer, on bringing this up

I agree with what you said in the beginning that the three of them (well two actually) ether didn't want to make movies any more or they just didn't care. Its true throughout the fourth season coming up to the end that Melissa and Jason, just seem to loose interest in the whole making movies with Brandon tho that's what I come to believe. Sadly I think at some point the final season Brandon, realize that his friends just wasn't into making movies any more (lack of motivation ect.) Seeing Brandon lose his camera at the end was sad but I believe that it was for the best seeing that sens he was in away hiding behind it from the real world and making movies that closely relates to his problems.

To answer your question I think at first Melissa and Jason wanted to help make the movies and act in them but as time went on they slowly thought to themselves 'Is this what I really want to do?.' With that question stuck in there head they begin to not care any more about the movies and only did it for Brandon so they wouldn't make him up set.

Now I have a question: Brandon, Melissa and Jason are young kids around I want to say maybe 7 or 8 (sorry if I'm wrong on this) but when any of us were that age did we really stick with one thing for that long? Like at first we wanted to be a teacher or something the next minute we want to be this, so do you think that's what Melissa and Jason were going through?

I love these kind of discussions.

Ever since I saw the season finale (I haven't seen all of the episodes, unfortunately. Getting DVD's for Christmas. :smileytongue:) I've been wondering the same thing that's being discussed.

I'd like to think Brendon would continue making films. Like someone said in one of the above posts, he's shown himself to be the more creative type, as he seems to fails in academics and athletics.

But the way he quickly went from looking heartbroken to getting excited over what food they wanted eat just kind of makes it seem like he's not only accepted the fact his movies aren't worth pursuing, but he's gotten over them, at least to some extent.

Stevo: A Porshe, that you bought at a Volkswagen dealership. Volkswagen, right? For the people who designed it? Who made that possible, Let me give you a hint, Adolf Hitler.

Wow, so when I saw the Home Movies finale, and got so extremely sad after that episode (what with them going under the realization that their movie making was just something to fill that void in each of their lives) I tried to figure it out, and got like barely half way there, but wow, I had never thought about the rest of season 4. Your explanation is perfect, and I see where it helps to understand the deeper meaning of the series if it is similar to your own upbringing, as I am in the same boat. I was thinking maybe when Brendon said that whole line about "...a crushed camera doesn't stop you from making movies..." Perhaps he meant metaphorically that the movies he'll be making now is just memories or what not with his new life or what not. It is a bit of a stretch to make the analogy between movies and memories but it is just a thought.

Irregardless, great explanation of not only the last episode, but the series as a whole. I bet if you watched the whole seriies having not read this and you went back now, you might see the show in a different way. I know after I read it I started thinking back to various episodes. It really seems like McGuirk, aside from his somewhat selfish and immaturish ways, has for the most part tried to be that father figure for Brendon. Not that it wasn't obvious but I'm just saying. I haven't seen the series as a whole in a while but I'm pretty sure the little tension between Melissas father and her was settled. As for Jason, the one episode I remember getting somewhat personal with him was the episode where he essentially wanted his parents to get a divorce to be able to relate to Brendon and Melissa I think. I don't quite know what to make of that but still. Anyways, thanks Writer for that post, I loved reading it, and more so just thinking about it....nostalgia. *sigh*

Great job with this, writer.  Gosh, what a heart-churning ending - now with much more significance after reading your analysis.

'Home Movies' was such an awesome show, and I think they ended right where they should have.  Great ending.

I enjoyed the ending to the series.

It's apparent that they will stop making movies, obviously because of the camera, but it seems  that it's like a 'how to grow up ending.'

They're kids and are growing up, leaving their movie-making days behind.

Then again, I try not to over analyze shows; it's just TV and doesn't need that much thought.

Great observations. In truth there were many metaphors in the final episode. I am truly captivated by your focus at McGurks wanting Brendon to include the Grill in his last movie. If you noticed during that episode, when McGurk was hired by Paula to repair the kitchen after the fire, McGurk was more of the Man of the house rather than the hired help. His associations with Paula's mother, his short but deep interactions with Brendon and his care and LOVE for Josie. McGurk wants to be the Father of that family. that camera breaking was exactly what you pointed out it to be. The symbolic breech of Natural father and son and the alliance of father ( in the real sense with McGurk).
