omfg Seriously? This thread makes me giggle. I highly doubt the hair color of a cartoon character will allow for you do know what race they are... Because, they're cartoons... And the name thing seriously does not matter, at all. I myself am black, and I have a Scottish last name. What, pray tell, would an African-American last name be? Because I honestly can't think of anything specific.

I personally always thought of Melissa as black, but I never really thought about it too much. And in the Temporary Blindness episode, they mention that they think Josie's bio-parents are Don Ho and Eartha Kit...Kind of hints at what Josie's ethnicity might be, but kinda not. So, they were very vague. About pretty much everything.

In all honesty, though, I could care less what race any of them are. The show just kicks ass, that's all that matters to me.

Aha. I was just trying to think of who it was they'd said. For whatever reason, I am fairly positive adoptive forms list the ethnic background of orphans, if it's known. So while everything else may remain a mystery, I think this is indicative that Paula was informed Josie is of African descent. Or she ignores that she was informed Josie's Irish, and has reverse-albino syndrome.

I don't see what the problem is, in idley musing about random details like this, though it does seem like they were purposely vague about a lot of things. The only time I can recall where race is actually mentioned is when those edutainers encouraged the school not to think of people as black or white-- but as light or dark. Still, while it could be taken as someone saying "I don't know if my parents want me watching a show with black people in it.", but I read it in a tone that makes it seem pretty interchangable with, "What do you think Paula's favorite color is?"

Not sure what point I'm trying to make.

As for the "afraid of water" stereotype. This sounds like a pretty un-Home Moviesish move, to me. I'd personally find it hilarious, though, if they subconsciously did it because the alternative would be attributing it to white kids.

As for the actual topic? Never really stopped and thought about it. I guess I've always assumed they were indian. I think part of that is just that Eric's voice isn't deep enough to fit the image of my personal imaginary stereotypical black man. :smileyindifferent:

Animal crackers in my soup. Monkeys and rabbits loop de loop. Gosh, oh gee! Don't I have fun? Swallowing animals, one by one.
