It's always strange hearing this from people who are in the process of being disrespectful to someone whom they don't know.
I mean, of course respect is earned, but isn't it earned by *showing* respect?
So when you begin by disrespecting someone, haven't you yourself shown that you are not worthy of respect?
Are you attempting to engage in a disrespect-arms-race?
I'd tend to believe that this is a ####-poor justification for someone who wants to act like an asshat but doesn't like consequences.

Personally, I treat people with a little respect, until I find that they either deserve more or less, depending on the person they are. Some people shoot way up, and others I try to avoid because I lost any and all respect for them.
That is an effective summary of EXACTLY how it ought to be done.
I mean, I probably respect my boss slightly more than I respect most other people, because he is a hard-working badass who is nice and respectful of everyone. But I treat every person with basic respect upon meeting them.

It's true that respect is earned, but you're also right in that one must give respect to gain respect.
First impressions mean a lot.
Me, I try to be friendly if not a little bit detached when I meet somebody, and treat them with the same common courtesy that I would like to be given.
It's a Golden Rule thing; do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
If I find that somebody is deserving of my respect, I give it.
If I find after a while that somebody is not worthy of my respect, then I don't bother with them.
A FESTIVUS FOR THE REST OF US

I'm getting good at them lately!
You're welcome! ^_^
There really should be a statistic in our profiles for how many threads we've solved. That'd be awesome.

You could get special ranks like "thread sleuth" and "negotiator".
That would be a good idea, they should really add that. Because thread solutions are a lot rarer than kudos.
Oh man, hell yes! =D
I'm sure people would abuse the system the same way they do with kudos, but still. ~shrug~

Hell yeah, jazz! I couldn't have said this better myself! Way too many people like that IMO. Did they ever realize they themselves are incriminating and turning themselves into the thing they despise the most by being such an ass to people for no reason? Well maybe an arrogant assumption based a weak and shallow impression of another person, but, honestly is that enough water to float anything? It seems like it wouldnt be enough to float a paper hat in a p!ss puddle. ![]()
