A WINTER'S TALE - Inuyasha Fanfic Contest

[ Edited ]

Here it is!!  Finally!!!  Helpme's long awaited fanfic contest!!

This is the official Inuyasha fanfic contest.  I'm calling it "A Winter's Tale" in honor of the theme.  Here are the rules:

Starts: December 28th @12:01AM

Ends:    January 28th @11:59 PM

Total Duration: 31 days

Judging will begin on January 29th at 12 Noon and end on February 1st at 8 PM.  The results will be published immediately afterward.

No spamming, flaming, trolling, etc. All posts must observe the TOS.

Entries will be anonymous.

If you want to enter, pick an alt from this thread and try it out there.  Check to make sure that you can edit your posts under the new alt so that you can work on your submissions freely when the time comes.  You may ask questions about these rules here under your main, or a known alt, but you must submit your entry as an "author" using one of the alts from the other thread.  Failure to observe this rule will result in disqualification.

Judging criteria are as follows:

Characterization

Contest entries must involve characters from the InuYasha anime/manga created by Rumiko Takahashi.  Original characters new to the milieu can be introduced, but they should blend into the time period and background setting.  In other words, a gum chewing Valley Girl would be definitely out of place.

Copyrighted characters should remain true to their original personalities.  For example, if a person writes Sesshomaru as a happy go lucky free spirit, obviously that's not right.  Keep the characters in character, what some may term as 'don't change their personality'.

Originality

Entries must be new material, written specifically for this contest.

Originality means that the story is unique to you.  Don't rewrite a scene that appears in the series, even if it's from a different character's POV.  Make up your own story and try to be as creative as possible.  Also, please refrain from "adapting" a fanfiction posted by someone else on the Internet.  That's called plagiarism.

There is also something to consider in creating an original story: logic.  Continuity and internal consistency are part of the concept and a mark of an original creation that the author lets flow from the characters and situations.  It goes hand in hand with characterization.  In other words, if a pencil was dull in one paragraph, it can't suddenly be sharp in the next paragraph without an explanation of how it got that way.  In the same way that an established character must be true to his or her previously depicted personality, events, times, and places must be kept true to their original descriptions in the story.

Theme

Entries must incorporate the contest's theme. There is plenty of leeway in how you choose to interpret it, but the application should be apparent.

The theme for this contest is "Winter".

Grammar and spelling

Grammar and spelling is a must for any serious author.  Typo's happen, but if your story reads like this: "Okay, so Inu and crew were up on this mountain.  And then Naraku was lyke "Awww nah y'all dint! Get up off my mountin you sum'betch!" (But they wasn't really skeered of him cuz Inu's the shiznit, y'now!)" -your fic is going to look ridiculous and no one will want to read it.  Anywhere.  In any language.  It's alright to put InuYasha's backwoods dialect in when he's speaking (characterization), but don't ruin your fic with bad grammar.

This also extends to paragraphing.  Make your story one giant paragraph and people will be tired of it long before they reach the end.

People may be posting in here with hints about typo's, spelling, and grammar.  We are all trying to help you make the best story you possibly can.  So, please take these comments in the spirit of helping and feel free to edit your story as you see fit.

Subject Matter

Hentai, yaoi, yuri, etc. stories or doujinshi will be Disqualified.  No character bashing, or personality warping.

    Prizes:

  • Inuyasha-related picture sig
  • +1 increase in kudo weight
  • privilege to post pics in the Inuyasha folder

The winner gets first choice of which prize they want and the first runner up will choose one of the remaining two prizes.

If, for any reason, a prize is refused, it will simply go to the next highest ranking entry.  Part of the point of anonymous entries is to avoid prize bartering.  So keep out of the PM system for chit chat and no ID guessing.  :smileymad:

Now for the assignment:

Your mission is to write a narrative fiction using the characters from episodes 1 - 167 of the original Inuyasha series.  This fiction should be the length of a brief short story, no less than 300 words and no more than 4,000 words.  This maximum is used by Writer's Digest for Mainstream/Literary Short Story and Genre Short Story submissions in their competitions.  It should be completely contained in one post with no continuation.  That means the story should start and end in the same message.

Your entry must be original, in English, unpublished and un-produced.  It must comply with the stated theme.

All entries must be submitted in the default font face, size and color.  Failure to do so will result in disqualification.

Entry must be in this format:

Title: Obviously you need to title it

Word Count: How many words (duh), (excluding the title)

Characters: Who is in the story

Rating: We said no hentai, but I think nothing over T rating...

Warnings:  Here's where you can say SPOILERS, or Pre-series, or AU.  You can also warn for violence or character death if you're doing an AU story.

The story itself will come below these headings.

Remember that the entry must be in the default font face, size, and color.  Bold, italic, and underline may be used.  The mandatory headings must be bolded, as above.

Also, many thanks to SonjaJade for contributing to the explanation of the judging criteria and submitting material for the rules, some of which has been taken word for word from her posts.  :smileyhappy:

Okay, everyone.  Let's rock 'n roll!!!

TITLE: One Winter Evening
WORD COUNT: 776 words

CHARACTERS: Inu tachi

RATING: G/E

WARNINGS: None

AUTHOR’S NOTES: A serow is kind of like a Japanese mountain goat.  This is what InuYasha brings in for dinner.

~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *  ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~

Brown eyes peered through the crack in the door, watching the snow fall quickly.  “It’s really bad out there,” Sango murmured as she shut the door to keep the warmth from their small fire in.

“I hope we have enough firewood to keep the fire going,” Kagome said worriedly as she clutched her knees under her chin.

InuYasha laid on his side, his pinkie finger digging around in his furry dog ear.  “Quit yer complainin’!  It ain’t like I can’t just go get some more!”

“Yes,” Miroku agreed.  “But the wood will likely be wet from lying under the snow.  I think if you’re going to get more, you should get it now.  It will need to dry out before we can use it.”

“Alright already!” he barked, getting to his feet and slipping Tessaiga into his sash.  “Guess I’ll try to bring back a rabbit or something while I’m out there.”  He opened and shut the door quickly and left before anyone could stop him.

“What if he gets lost?” Kagome asked.  “It’s coming down so hard and fast.”

“He’ll be alright, Kagome!” Shippo replied as he scurried onto her shoulder.  “He can find his way back using his nose!”

“He’ll be fine.  Besides, he’s too stubborn to die,” Miroku grinned at Kagome.

She frowned into the fire pit and fiddled with her scarf while the others waited quietly for their half demon leader to return.  Shippo rooted around in her backpack for sweets while Sango tended to her weapons and Miroku stroked Kirara’s head.  No matter how hard she tried to shove the thought of InuYasha freezing to death out of her mind, the notion kept flitting about.  Suddenly she blurted out, “What if his feet freeze and they turn black and fall off!?”

Sango giggled.  “Kagome, you’re being silly.  InuYasha doesn’t need shoes, his demon blood protects him from the elements.”

“Even in extreme weather like this?” she mumbled.

“Especially in extreme weather like this!”  Sango patted her shoulder.  “Do you really think InuYasha would really let something like snow kill him?  He’d sooner cut off his arm.”

Just then, InuYasha returned, shaking clumps of snow off of his head and shoulders and sprinkling the others with bits of melting snow and ice.  He had a large armload of firewood with a freshly killed serow on top that he dropped by the front door.  He began unloading the logs near the fire so they could dry and said, “Build up the fire, I’m gonna skin and spit this real quick.”  When he rose, Kagome had run and threw her arms around him, causing his eyes to widen impossibly.

“K-Kagome!!?  What the hell!?”

“I was worried about you,” came her reply, muffled by the heavy fabric of the fire rat.  “I just knew you were going to get lost or freeze to death!”

InuYasha’s face was red as his suikan and he swallowed as he tried to gently push his friend away.  “Jeeze, have a little faith, wouldja!?”  Something about the way she looked at him sent his guts fluttering nervously and he quickly turned, grabbed the goat like creature off the floor, and went outside once more.  “I’ll be right back.  I’m gonna be right out front, so don’t worry so much.”

Sango glanced at Miroku, who grinned at her.  A smile of her own bloomed on her lips and she said, “I told you he would be fine.  Let’s try to get the fire going so we can eat!”

Kagome sighed with relief and began helping Sango with the fire, and then Miroku took over cooking after InuYasha brought the serow back inside.  The small shrine house began to warm with the added firewood, and after they ate, everyone settled in to get some much needed sleep.

As the others slumbered, InuYasha cracked an eye open and looked over at Kagome, who was huddled up with Shippo and sleeping peacefully on her side.  Her embrace had startled him, but it was far from unwanted.  He thought about how warm she felt pressed against him, how sweet she smelled, how incredible it had felt to have her arms wrapped around him like that…  “Damn woman.  Always worryin’…” he said softly to himself.  ‘Always worryin’ about me,’ he thought.  ‘Just like my mother did.’  He thought about that for a moment.  His mother worried for him because she loved him… was it possible that Kagome worried about him for the same reason?  Did Kagome love him?

He smiled in the dim shrine.  He liked the thought of that.  And with the possibilities that the idea brought to his mind, he drifted off to sleep.

Title: Kagome's Fate

Word Count: 3,902

Characters: Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, Shippo, Kagome, Kaede, Naraku

Rating: Teen

Warnings: Character Death

The time was 9:00AM. It was a gorgeous Saturday afternoon. Kagome, Shippo, Sango, and Miroku were still sleeping in Kaede’s hut. Inuyasha was the first to awaken. He slowly sat up and rubbed his head, and then yawned. He looked at the others and noticed that they were still sound asleep, so he decided to leave them be.

“It looks like your up quite early Inuyasha.” Kaede said as Inuyasha walked outside.

He looked at her with tired eyes and decided not to talk. He slowly walked past her and rested on one of the wooden posts that had been put up. He then heard a voice.

“It’s good to see your awake Kagome.” Kaede said softly.

Kagome cheerfully nodded.

“Yup. The others should be up soon.”

It was only a few minutes later, that Miroku, Sango, and Shippo came outside. The air was cold and the trees were leafless. The clouds were white as snow, and the sun was effulgent. Kagome made her way towards Inuyasha and stood to the wooden pole next to him.

“Today is a nice day isn’t it? Maybe we could just relax and go to one of the hot springs.” She said cheerfully.

Miroku then spoke up.

“Yes. A hot spring would be great with this weather. After so many battles, a nice time in the hot spring would be wonderful.”

He said this his face turned light red and had a little smirk on his face.

“Pervert.” Sango and Kagome both said at the same time.

Shippo walked over to Miroku and looked at him with a blank face.

“You know your just going to be in the hot spring with Inuyasha don’t you? Kagome and Sango are always in the other hot spring. And if you ever try spying on them, you're just going to get hurt.”

Sango, Inuyasha, and Kagome, all nodded in agreement. Miroku then smiled and rubbed the back of his head.

“Yeah. I guess your right.”

With that covered, they all started to go to the hot springs. It was a mile walk. To get there, they had to pass a vacant forest. The trees were a dirty brown, and the grass was short. The only thing in the forest was a few birds. They passed by pretty quickly and finally reached the hot springs. The air was welcoming and warm, and the steam rose from the springs. The water was lucent and looked magnificent. Kagome and Sango went to the left hot spring. There was a boulder between the two. Miroku, Inuyasha, and Shippo got the right one. They climbed in and got used to the hot steaming water, and then relaxed. The water stopped at their chest. Miroku overheard Kagome and Sango talking, and he decided to try and peek around the corner of the rock to see their gorgeous bodies.

“Your going to get hurt.” Inuyasha said as he looked away.

Miroku peeked around the corner and Kagome glanced over and saw him, but thought it was Inuyasha.

“SIT!” she yelled as Inuyasha’s face plunged into the hot spring water.

“WHAT WAS THAT FOR!?” He yelled.

Kagome then noticed it was Miroku who peeked around the boulder. Miroku and Inuyasha both got out of the hot spring with bruises on their faces. Kagome and Sango both got out as well. They all dried off and sat down on the grass.

“Hey Kagome, what did you bring us for lunch today?” Miroku asked.

Kagome smiled cheerfully as she lied out some potato chips, sandwiches, and ramen. Everyone looked happy and began to eat their food. After lunch, they started to walk towards Kaede’s place. They walked for only a few minutes and Kagome stopped and her eyes widened. Everyone turned around.

“Kagome, do you sense something?” Inuyasha asked.

“I sense the sacred jewel shard!” she said surprised.

None of them expected to do anything today except relax. Everyone had a serious look on their face. Kagome pointed in the south direction, where she sensed the jewel. Sango, Miroku, Inuyasha, Shippo, and Kagome all ran in that direction.

“Maybe Naraku is here. He won’t get away this time.” Inuyasha said under his breath.

As they ran, they came to another forest and near the end was a drop-off. It was a wasteland. The only thing there was a few leafless trees. Kagome suddenly stopped.

“What’s the matter?” Miroku asked.

She looked around in circles.

“I...can’t sense it anymore.” she said softly.

Everyone looked surprised. They were disappointed yet wary. They started walking to the south again, hoping that they may get a clue to where it may be. They walked out of the forest and into the deserted wasteland hoping something may be there. The wasteland was black and enormous. Small piles of bones, and brown trees were the only thing to be found. The air smelt like ash, and the scent of death washed over the place.

“This place reeks” Inuyasha said.

“WAIT!” Kagome interrupted. “I SENSE THE JEWEL!”

They all looked very shocked. Inuyasha faced Kagome.

“Where is it?” He desperately asked.

“The jewel, i can sense it all over this place. But it should be right here. I know we are in the right area.”

“If this is a demon, then there is a chance that it may be able to hide itself, or it may be underground” Sango interrupted.

Everybody got ready to battle. They waited for minutes but nothing happened. Inuyasha got impatient.

“C’MON DEMON! SHOW YOURSELF!” He yelled.

They waited a bit more, but nothing came out. It was getting cold, and the temperature was dropping quick. Shippo started to shiver.

They began to lose hope of finding the sacred jewel shard in a deserted place like this. The sky was very grim and the clouds were dark. It stared to snow lightly. They didn’t want to turn around after getting this far so they decided to go ahead. Only a few hundred feet in front of them was a huge cavern. Kagome walked to it and stopped. She pointed in the cave.

“It’s in here!” She yelled.

Everyone stopped and looked at Kagome. They nodded and started to walk into the cavern. It smelt of death and demons.

“Hmhmhmhm. It seems that you were able to make it.”

Naraku appeared near the back of the cave in his Baboon pelt. He held several pieces of the jewel  in his hand. His Saimyosho were with him as well.

“This time Inuyasha, I will make sure one of you die here.”

He threw five of the shards into the cavern and disappeared.

“COME BACK HERE!” Inuyasha yelled fiercely.

Naraku’s scent disappeared quickly and the cavern began to shake. Everyone ran out of it as fast as they could. Outside, it started to snow more. The weather was cold, and everyone got ready to battle. The Cavern shook frantically, and eventually broke down. They could only see dust. What emerged from the dust was not a huge demon as they expected. It was a demon of 6”4. He resembled that of a human. His hair was long and black. It reached his shoulders. He was shirtless, yet wore long pants made of skin from animals. His fingernails were painted black and his eyes were sky blue. He wasn’t wearing any shoes. He had a smile on his face.

“What’s with this guy? He doesn’t have a scent” Inuyasha said.

The demon started to walk slowly towards Inuyasha and the others.

“Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Azukitogi. The only reason I am here is to kill you. For it is Naraku’s wish for me to do so” he smoothly said.

Kagome stood by Inuyasha as she drew her bow and arrow.

Azukitogi stood there as he noticed her preparing to release it at him. He stood and smiled.

“TAKE THIS!” she yelled.

The arrow whistled through the wind as it’s speed dramatically increased, heading towards Azukitogi’s head. He noticed it coming and sighed. Swiftly, he bent to his side as the arrow was coming towards him, and managed to grab it with his bare hand.

“You can’t be serious. This is what you call a weapon? Your so pathetic.”

He crushed Kagome’s arrow and laughed.

“C’mon. Who’s next. You will find that it is going to be hard to kill me. And possibly...sad.”

Nobody knew what to make of this, so they just tried to ignore him. Inuyasha stepped in front of Azukitogi and pulled out the Tetsusaiga. The gravel surrounding Inuyasha started to dispel. Inuyasha’s eyes widened and he raised the Tetsusaiga above his head.

“WINDSCAR!” he yelled at the top of his voice.

The massive blow hurled toward Azukitogi. The demon just stood there with a blank expression on his face. He didn’t take a single step. The windscar pounded into his right shoulder as it went past him. Inuyasha smiled thinking that he had killed the demon so easily. A cloud of dust and sand mixed in with the snow was clouding the area around Azukitogi and nobody could see him. Inuyasha then heard his voice.

“How sad. This is the power of the almighty Inuyasha? Naraku was right. You are just a filthy half breed.”

Azukitogi then rushed out of the dust and in an instant, was right next to Inuyasha’s shoulder, and passed right through him. He stood a few feet away from the group. Inuyasha turned around with wide eyes and looked at his shoulder. It had started to bleed. Inuyasha was frightened and surprised at this demon’s speed. Azukitogi turned around and faced Inuyasha once more.

“Now, come at me again you filthy half breed!”

Inuyasha got angry and got ready to attack once more.

“ADAMANT BARRAGE!!!” Inuyasha screamed as he swung Tetsusaiga.

The attack came at Azukitogi at an alarming rate, yet he stood there once again. Adamant Barrage hit him head on. It pierced through his arms, legs, stomach, and one in the skull, yet he still stood. Inuyasha waited and thought he was dead yet again.

“There’s no way he could be alive after an attack like that” he thought to himself.

Azukitogi raised his arms and forcefully extracted every spear that was in him. He then got serious and had the expression of hate in his eyes.

“Your so naive. You would have thought by this point, that attacks mean nothing to me. You will not be able to kill me with any attack you can possibly think of. Remember when I said I would make sure one of you die here. There is a reason I said that. I will die, when one of you die. Trust me.”

He then started laughing loudly. Azukitogi pulled out his sword that looked dull and worthless. He grabbed the end of it with both hands and stabbed it in the ground.

“Who will it be?”

Inuyasha was afraid, yet very mad. He gripped his sword firmly. Kagome and the others had a terrifying look in their eyes. None of them knew what to do. The snow started to pick up. It was heavy and it pounded in everyones faces. They all tried to ignore it. Azukitogi kept hold of his sword and then screamed as loud as he could. The ground shook and everyone ran back a few feet to be careful. The demon’s eyes turned black and his smile widened. The ground around him tore apart and his body started to melt down into the sword. The sword then bent into a complete circle and expanded. It reached to a length of 9 feet up and down. It looked like a huge silver, sharp sword curled into a circle. They then heard Azukitogi’s voice again.

“This is my true form. I cannot go back now. I am only here to do Naraku’s wish. I will make sure that I kill one of you here. I can’t return to my original form. And don’t try running, it will not get you anywhere.”

Inuyasha didn’t know what to do. He turned around and looked at his friends.

“If what he is saying is true, one of us will have to sacrifice ourself to save the others. But i can’t allow that to happen. There has to be some other way.”

Azukitogi interrupted him.

“Were you just listening to me!? I die when one of you die with me! And i know which one of you Naraku told me to kill. And it wasn’t you Inuyasha.”

Inuyasha looked surprised.

“What!? But...” Azukitogi interrupted him again.

“HEY! I was the one talking. Now, Naraku told me not to worry about you Inuyasha. He will take care of you in due time. My target here.....is Kagome. She can sense the shards of the Shikon Jewel."

Kagome was frightened and she trembled as he spoke. Inuyasha stepped in front of Kagome and raised his blade.

“I would like to see you try and kill her you bastard!” Inuyasha screamed.

“WINDSCAR!”

He swung with all of his might. The Windscar came to a direct hit upon Azukitogi, and yet again, didn’t do any damage.

“ADAMANT BARRAGE!”

“BLADES OF BLOOD”

Inuyasha yelled and attacked Azukitogi with all of his might. Although, no matter what he did, Azukitogi always seemed to be unharmed. Inuyasha tired himself out and started to pant. Sango stood beside him.

“HIRAIKOTSU!” she yelled as her weapon slammed into Azukitogi.

It stayed in motion for only a few seconds and then bounced back as it stabbed into the snow just a few feet in front of her. Kagome and Miroku tried to attack as well. Miroku was about to open his Wind Tunnel, but he noticed the Saimyosho behind the demon. Kagome fired her arrows at him as well, but did nothing. Azukitogi then spoke.

“It looks like it’s my turn now. I will take Kagome by force if I have to. His circle like body began to spin and spears shot out with extreme speed slamming into the trees and ground around them. They tried their best to dodge his attacks. They all dodged them except for one that hit Miroku’s right shoulder.

“It’s nothing” Miroku said. “Just focus on the enemy.”

Inuyasha then butted in.

“HOW!? Everything we do.....we just can’t hurt him!”

The snow died down a little, and the wind stopped. Azukitogi got ready to attack once more. He pounded his body into the ground and started to spin. He was headed towards Kagome. His body moved with great speed. Inuyasha and Sango stepped in front of Kagome.

“WINDSCAR!”

“HIRAIKOTSU!”

Both attacks hit him head on, but it didn't slow him down. Azukitogi hit Inuyasha with tremendous force. The blades tore through his right arm and made a gash in it. Flesh flew off as it patted the light snow. His arm started to bleed tremendously. Inuyasha looked at his arm with horror.

“D....Dammit!”

Azukitogi stopped and turned around. He then slowly rose into the sky.

“STAY BACK KAGOME!” Inuyasha yelled.

Inuyasha, Sango, Shippo, and Miroku all got in front of Kagome to protect her. Everyone got out their weapons including Kagome. She was the first to attack. Her arrow hit the demon, but it bounced off as if it were a toy.

“WINDSCAR!”

“HIRAIKOTSU!”

“FOX FIRE!”

All of the attacks were useless. They grew weary as Azukitogi didn’t use any energy at all. Then it happened. Azukitogi started to turn purple in the middle of the circle where there was nothing. It was forming something. Everyone got ready to defend themselves yet again. The demon spoke.

“This is enough. It was fun while it lasted, but I’m afraid this is where I die, and Kagome dies.”

The inner circle turned more purple as energy waves formed in it. Inuyasha still continued to attack.

“ADAMANT BARRAGE!”

Yet again, the spears only bounced off the blade. The wind and snow started to pick up and the trees shook violently. Azukitogi’s silver blade turned jet black. His voice grew deeper as he spoke, and he sounded irritated.

“You idiots get on my nerve, ya know that!”

Four holes opened on the corners of the black blade and four metallic like spears attached to a metal rope shot out at Kagome. Inuyasha hit the spears with his sword to try and deflect them back. The spears stopped and retracted back into the blade. Azukitogi paused for a minute and then laughed. The spears came out yet again, but this time, it was only one, and it was aiming for Sango. Miroku saw it coming and hit the spear with the staff, yet in the corner of his eye, another spear was headed towards Shippo. With Miroku and Sango distracted, Inuyasha ran towards Shippo and hit it with his Tetsusaiga. Though there was one last spear. This one was coming for Kagome. This all happened in just a few seconds. The last spear opened up and clamped down on Kagome’s right leg. The second it touched her, the spear forcefully pulled her leg, causing her to pound the ground with her back. It then dragged her across the snow and eventually pulled her up high into the cold air.

“KAGOME!” everybody yelled at once.

The other three spears retracted again and clamped down on Kagome’s left leg, and both arms. Inuyasha was afraid that she may die. Azukitogi then spoke.

“If I were you, I wouldn’t even think of attacking. The moment you attack, I can use Kagome as a shield. She will die instantly. Then again, she will die anyway. When she dies, I die. You will see how this works as I demonstrate it to you.”

“KAGOMEEE!!” Inuyasha screamed to the top of his lungs.

He threw down the Tetsusaiga and jumped towards Azukitogi. His eyes were filled with rage. Azukitogi noticed him and put Kagome out front to act like a shield. Inuyasha landed on Kagome’s shoulder and jumped off aiming towards the black blade behind her. He clawed at the blades until his hands bled. The cold air only intensified the pain. The blood dripped off of his hands onto Kagome’s shoulder. Inuyasha then jumped off. As he jumped off, another spear was already coming towards him. He didn’t notice it until it was to late. The spear tore through his chest as his eyes widened in pain. He coughed up blood as it met with the white snow. His body pounded into the ground and he stopped moving for a minute. Sango, Miroku, and Shippo came to Inuyasha’s aid. Then out of nowhere Myoga jumped in front of them and started talking.

“Get away from Master Inuyasha. Remember last time he was in this state. He fought against Goshinki. He will become a full demon!”

They all looked startled, and then stood back. Inuyasha’s body lied for only a minute, and then his arm twitched. He slowly started to get up.

“I thought you only had four spears Azukitogi. I guess I was wrong.” Inuyasha said.

His eyes were blood red. His claws were longer as well. The purple strikes ran across his cheeks. He glared at Azukitogi and the captured Kagome. Azukitogi released four spears at one time. Inuyasha ran and slashed at them as they hit his hand. At every slash, his hand bled, but he ignored the pain. As Inuyasha drew closer, Azukitogi tried to put Kagome in front of him as a shield one more time. Inuyasha noticed her at the last second and stopped. This gave Azukitogi a chance to hit him once again. A spear tore through his left leg as he fell back to the ground. Inuyasha still stood up and tried to ignore the pain, yet it was hard to do. Kagome watched as tears started to form in her eyes.

“HIRAIKOTSU!”

Sango threw her weapon at Azukitogi as Inuyasha tried to claw him. Kagome then sensed the jewel shards in the demon. It took her a while to notice it, but they were in different spears.

“INUYASHA! AIM FOR THE SPEARS AT EACH CORNER! TEAR THEM OFF! EACH ONE HAS A JEWEL SHARD!”

Inuyasha waited as Azukitogi attacked again. The spear came at him, except this time, Inuyasha waited. The spear grew nearer and then he leaned back as he grabbed the spear and yanked on it. He threw the spear into the ground as he jumped up and clawed at the corner multiple times. It finally tore off and fell into the snow. Azukitogi noticed that Inuyasha had figured him out. One spear by another. Three of his spears were gone. Azukitogi was desperate to win. The inner circle started to glow. He was going to try and consume Kagome. Though he didn’t have enough time. Inuyasha ripped off the last spear at the corner as it dropped to the ground next to the other three. The glowing stopped as the demon’s body hit the ground and the spears that held onto Kagome were released. Azukitogi lied there, without moving. Inuyasha was still in his demon form. He was panting, and trying to catch his breath.

“Sit” Kagome said quietly.

Inuyasha’s face pounded into the snow.

“HEY! WHAT WAS THAT FOR!” he yelled.

Kagome smiled at him as she started to walk towards him. Inuyasha was still hurting at the pain the spears gave him. She hugged him lightly as she almost started to cry. Then, she felt the shards move. Multiple spears came shooting at Inuyasha, Sango, Miroku, and Shippo. The spears pounded into there arms and legs nailing them to the nearby trees, making them unable to move. Azukitogi was furious. The inner circle started to turn purple yet again and started to lure in Kagome. Inuyasha and the others couldn’t move.

“NO! KAGOME!” Inuyasha yelled

Kagome was being consumed into the demon. She clawed at the snow and ground trying to hang on, but she couldn’t do anything. Tears flew from her eyes. She screamed for the others as she kicked and flailed about. She looked behind her and noticed that she was just a few feet away from the Demon. Azukitogi remained silent as he watched her struggle. Kagome lifted off the ground for a brief second and entered Azukitogi’s vortex. The last sound she made was a bloodcurdling scream. Azukitogi waited just a few seconds and screamed as well. His entire body disintegrated. The only thing that was left was 5 jewel shards. The spears that were attached to Inuyasha and the others disappeared. They all screamed for Kagome’s name as loud as they could. They had no response. Shippo started to cry. Inuyasha’s hair covered his eyes.

“I’m so sorry....Kagome. I couldn’t protect you.”

A tear formed in his eye as it rolled down his cheek and landed in the snow. The next day Kaede and the villagers built a shrine as a memorial for Kagome. Inuyasha visited the shrine every day for weeks. He lied a flower on the bed of the shrine every time he visited.  Weeks passed and Inuyasha still continued to visit the shrine. It was night, and the moon was bright. It shined down on Inuyasha’s entire body. He tried to hold back his tears. He lied down another flower on the shrine as he slowly backed away.

“I’m so sorry.....Kagome.”

I don't feel like making an alt though, would it be alright if I just posted something short even if it won't be eligible for a prize?

That pretty much defeats the purpose of posting it here, though.  Wouldn't you rather just post it in the Creative Works folder if it isn't going to compete?

Of course, you're welcome to post here any time.  However, it would mean an instant disqualification if you do it under your main.

Very interesting; but you should go back for more editing.  Check spelling.  There is a typo on the very "fist" line.  Also, take note of the following rules:

Your - something belonging to you

Yore - time long past

You're - you are

There - that place

They're - they are

Lie -  noun, a falsehood.  Lie - verb, to tell a lie or to recline.  Past tense - lied for falsehood, or lay for reclined.

Lay - verb, to put something down.  Past tense - laid.

All of these have to be used correctly in order to score in the grammar section.

In addition, paragraph spacing requires skipping a line between paragraphs.

On a general critique I have to ask if you think it is wise to knock off a major character before the primary story line is completed.  This goes to the Characterization part of the contest.  It's okay if you want to do that; but just be sure if you do.

 I thought about that as well. Of course, I'm not sure if I'm even going to have time to write anything in the first place.

Title: The Orphan in the Night

Word Count: 2322

Characters: The Woman, The Orphan Boy
Rating: G, all ages.
Warnings:  Pre-series. This story contains shifting points of view.

Spoiler
"Damn them!  Acting like I was the only one who could keep them safe.  Calling me Leader but keeping me virtual prisoner.  If they have the knowledge to create someone like me, they have the knowledge to help themselves.  It's time for a vacation.  Luckily, I never let on what half of my abilities are.  Where to go, and when?  Someplace where they can't find me, someplace they think very unpleasant, someplace they wouldn't even think possible."

So she chose a time that was unpleasant, The Little Ice Age; but not Europe or America.  They were well documented and might be a place her pursuers would search.  In the northern hemisphere, that left Asia.   There was little known about Asia then and few who seemed curious.  She finally settled on Japan, in winter.  Was it as bad as Europe?  Well, time to find out.  It would be a unique experience and a way to learn if the event was universal.  It was her dream vacation.

Her portal was invisible and not too accurate because she couldn't leave a hint of her destination; but hopefully, it would be close to the time of the Maunder minimum.  She went through, and found herself in the wilds of Japan.  It was beautiful.  It was winter.  It was also off the mark by more than a few years.  Oh well, carry on anyway.  As long as no one could find the portal, she couldn't be followed.

She knew she had to keep contact with the natives to a minimum, at least at first.  So she traveled at night.  She caught a beautiful large salmon from the sea and left it in exchange for some scavenged clothes, sure that the villagers wouldn't mind the trade.

A small cabin in the woods among the mountains was a nice place to stay and observe how the era played out.  Japan's climate was not documented much.  Everything was peaceful and pleasant, and cold, but not as cold as expected, until that night.  That was the night she encountered the boy.

It was after dinner and getting late when she felt a presence somewhere outside the cabin.  It was an emotion, really.  Another of those abilities, that she had never revealed, told her someone terrified was near her hut.  She went outside and looked around.  It wasn't an animal and it was hiding nearby.  She could feel the emotion and followed it to a tree a few hundred yards away.  There, in the deep darkness, she could see the shape of a small child, maybe six or seven years old, high in a tree.  He had climbed it for safety, an amazing climb.

As she got closer, she could feel him shivering in the cold and holding his breath to stay hidden.  The poor thing was terrified.  No wonder.  The villagers seldom stayed in the forest at night.  It was a dangerous place.  How could a child have gotten lost here?  There were no search parties looking for him either.  She would be able to sense them if there were.  The village was miles away and she could feel its peaceful sleep from here.  Did anyone even know this child was gone?

"Come down child.  You are safe with me.  I have food and a warm hut.  You can stay the night and go back to your village tomorrow.  If you stay here on such a cold night, you will freeze to death.  Come in out of the snow and the wind."

Silence.

She was standing directly below the tree and could feel the child's terror increase, as if that were possible.  At this distance, she could sense his distrust.  He was clinging to the tree with all his strength.  There was no other way.  She would have to bring him down and then risk contact with his village tomorrow.  Otherwise, the child would die before morning.

She left the tree, knowing he would not move if he thought he had evaded her.  Besides, if he came down on his own, it would be easier to approach him.  At any rate, it was a quick jog back to the hut; and she found what she was looking for immediately.  If he refused to come down, she would have to send him to sleep and catch him as he fell.

When she got back, he was still there, a quick breath and the dart found its target.  Within seconds, the child was in her arms.  He was a young boy, barefoot, somewhat dirty, and very slight of build.  As soon as she touched him, though, there was a flash.  First there was the sensation of how cold he was and then a brilliant burst of colored light behind her eyes.

What was that?  He was an ordinary boy.  Why that blinding flash of hot light?  Was it red?  She had never encountered that before.  It made her reel.  Was there something special about him?

No time to worry about that now.  Get him to a nice warm room and have a meal ready for him when he woke up.  During the short walk back, there were images of a beautiful well-dressed woman.  Was the boy dreaming of someone he knew?  Good.  That was a way to calm him down.  Become someone familiar.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Warm.  Comfortable."
He woke up slowly, shaking off the effects of the concoction that made him do the thing he feared most: sleep.  "What is this place?"  He wondered what had happened, but he didn't speak out loud.
As he sat up and looked around, he saw he was in a small, windowless room.  There was a stone fireplace on one side, and something that smelled good was cooking there.  Not far away was a tall woman, who looked very familiar, sitting on a chair.  Was she a princess?  Only lords and princesses ever had chairs.  When she saw him sit up, she brought over a bowl and a cloth, and told him to wash up.
Somehow, he couldn't refuse and washed his hands and face as she ladled a stew out of the cooking pot.  It smelled so good; and he was so hungry.  Throwing caution to the winds, he gobbled the whole thing down; and was surprised to see another plate offered up with a large square of roasted fish and a mound of rice on it.  That fish must have been huge to have such a giant piece be only a small part of it.  Soon, his belly was full and he looked at the woman.  Was he dreaming all this?  He spoke his first word.
"Mother?"
His question was answered with a question.  "Do I resemble your mother?"  He could only nod back.  Suddenly, he was suspicious; and looked around for a way to escape.  That's when he realized that this hut didn't even have a door!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

She studied the boy.  Perhaps adopting the facade of the woman in his dream was not a good idea?  While he slept she could feel his loneliness, and sadness.  He was also angry, angry that he had to endure that loneliness and sadness.  Now that he awoke he was suspicious.  He did not trust the familiar figure before him.

She could feel his fear rise again.  So she tried to reassure him that the resemblance was only a thing he must be wishing for.  She thanked him for thinking so highly of her that he would imagine she was his mother, and asked where his mother was, so that she could take him home in the morning.

Just before he spoke, she saw that flash again.  She was still reeling from it when he said that his mother was dead.  She hoped that he took her expression for sympathy and not pain.  She then offered to take him to his father, only to find out that his father had died so long ago he couldn't even remember him.  This was a true orphan, then.  Did anyone in his village, at least, take him in?  Another flash, and the most shocking answer of all.

The boy didn't have a village.

No wonder he was so terrified up in that tree.  He was alone and defenseless.  It was the only place he could go to be even a little bit safe.  Yet, he was somehow the source of the power that caused those flashes.  How did he do it?  Did he even realize he did it?

There was nothing about him to hint of anything out of the ordinary.  He was a normal Japanese child, black-haired and dark-eyed (with a hint of violet in them).  Except for the fact that he was so surly and rude when he spoke, he could have been a village headman's son or even the child of a daimyo.  The image of his mother was of a wealthy woman, and his clothing belonged in a palace court, or a shrine.  Suddenly, she felt sad at the pain he must feel every day, all alone.

Were those flashes a hint of some power of his, one kindred to her own?  Was that what allowed him to survive in the wilderness and what now clashed with her brain?  When she asked him his name, she got a particularly strong flash; but no answer.

As the night wore on, the boy seemed to be looking for a way out of the room.  The flashes were coming more often, and something else was happening, too.  He seemed to be developing a ruddy glow of power in his hands.  If she concentrated on that glow, the flashes weren't so bad.  But by now, they were giving her a headache.

Finally, she told him that she would take him back out to the forest after daybreak, if that is where he really wanted to go; but he was welcome to stay with her for as long as he wanted.  He could stay in her warm home and eat more feasts like the one he just enjoyed.

He insisted on going before daybreak.  He told her she wouldn't want him there after the sun came up.

Why?  Would he explode?  No, but she still would not want him.  She would hate him and try to kill him then.  That was when she admitted that she could see he held some great power, especially in his hands.  Did he think that she feared that power?  He acted surprised.  He did not have any special power in his hands.  What did she mean?

All this time, she watched the glow build and focus on his fingernails.  The dawn was coming soon and she tried to honor his wish.  If there was something so terrible about him that he wanted to be alone, she did not have the heart to embarrass or corner him.  But she still had an hour to teach him how to recognize his growing power.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
He was amazed at what this strange woman said.  She claimed to have The Sight, but she was wrong about him.  His hands held no power, especially not on this night.  Yet she was so convincing, he decided to hear her out.
He sat quietly and did as she instructed.  He concentrated on his nails, those weak human soft things he hated.  Just feel his fingertips.  Relax.  That was hard to do, impossible even.  But he was suddenly very aware of his fingers, how they hurt with the strain of clinging to the tree, how they could feel the warmth of the room, and how they could suddenly feel the tingle of a person's touch.  His whole body was becoming charged with energy and he could suddenly focus it in his hands.
Nothing was happening on the outside; but he could feel a warmth under his nails and opened his eyes to see that his fingertips were touching hers and an electric tingle was passing through the contact points.  Then he saw a golden glow around his fingertips.  As soon as he saw it, she pulled her hands back, and it was gone.  But he could remember that feeling.
He felt something else as well, the sun was rising and soon the dawn would break.  Desperately, he begged to leave.  The woman took him through a curtain, that he was sure was a wall a minute ago; and he was outside a small hut built of thick logs.  It could have been a fallen tree covered in snow and would easily go unnoticed.  But he was free and he ran off through the snow just as the change was starting.
By the time the hut was hidden by trees, his hair was once again white and his eyes gold.  However, something was different this time.  He could feel power in his claws and the woman's last words to him echoed in his ears one more time.
"Your hands have the power to shatter souls."
He would try out this new power on the next demon to come after him, instead of running away.  At last he, Inuyasha, could survive on his own.
He might even go back to thank this mysterious stranger next month, when he became human again.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Back at the cabin, the strange woman smiled at the boy's departing red form.  He had no idea that she could see what he had become, even at this distance.  It was no mystery, now, how he was able to survive alone in the woods for as long as he had, or what the flashes were.  Too bad he would remember her only as a dream by this time tomorrow.

"This vacation turned out better than I expected.  I was able to help that boy and I got to see something unusual.  Perhaps it's time to return home and take up the mantle of a real Leader once again -- until the time comes for another vacation.  I'd like to visit this place again."
