I might do Kagome or Kikyo. For some reason, I just don't see myself expressing my fandom through cosplay...

I did consider doing a character for Halloween one year; but neither Sango nor Kagome nor Kagura nor Kikyo would exactly look good on a six decade old overweight person.  Since I have the katana, Inuyasha isn't out of the question; but there is that whole gender issue.

I would feel uneasy dressing as them because I think it takes fandom too far. I don't want it to seem as though I'm trying to live the characters' lives.

Part of the reason people cosplay in the first place is to pretend that they are the characters they are dressed as.

Its all good fun. It is nothing to be embarrased about. Heck, just last year, I went to my fouth year at Otakon dressed as both InuYasha and Kagome.

You went as both of them?  Not at the same time, I hope. 

Also, Halloween is a slightly different matter.  People do not necessarily dress because they are fans of something but simply because it is the universal dress-up night.  And Inuyasha is a niche enough show that it would make a truly unique costume.

No. I went as them seperately on respective days.

And I think it all boils down to people dress up in cosplay on those days because the events give them an excuse to pretend to be their respective characters.

Sure.  After all, isn't that what cosplay means?

That is why I differentialted it from Halloween, where people dress up but do not necessarily role play the costumes they are in. 

It's nice to see someone still get into the Inuyasha spirit that way.
