We've discussed this a few times that Inuyasha was supposed to have gone over to computer animation at episode 90.

Imagine my surprise to find a cel from that episode on eBay ---   and it's a hand drawn cel!

I got it; and it really is a hand-painted cel, of Inuyasha telling Sota he won't let him back into the house until he declares his love to his classmate.

So what gives chroniclers?  Why say that the series went over to computer graphics with that episode when it didn't?

I think I have a solution: The season four opening was in computer graphics (which starts at episode 90 I guess), but they didn't make the episodes in computer graphics until episode 100 (which is the moth demon's brother filler episode).

MAYBE THEY JUST INSERTED THE OPENING WHICH IS EASIER THAN REDUE THE WHOLE EPISODE

I'm wondering just what might turn up next.  The only thing I can think of is that computer graphics were used for the backgrounds and the foregrounds were still done on cels.

BTW:  The cel I have has both Sota and Kagome as part of the background and rendered crystal clear (as opposed to usual background objects).  This is funny since Sota is the object closest to the camera in the final shot.

That is what I thougt too, the animation in that one is noticeably different from the previous ones at least to me. This is only a guess, but the switch might coincide with a new opening or ending theme. We know all the Band of 7 stuff was done without cels and this episode was just before that arc started up so it wouldn't really surprise me.

Hi, I came across this thread while trying to find some news on IY:TFA, and as an Inuyasha cel collector I realized I could answer some of the inquiries you guys have. IY was definitely cel animated past episode 90 as I have a couple of cels of Kikyo and Kagome from episode 98. Here's what they look like:

I'm not positive of the cut off episode for cel animation, but I do think it was either 99 or 100 (as was said in this thread). All I know is that it was definitely cel animated to at least episode 98.

The reason why Kagome and Sota are part of the background is because that is not the original hand painted background used in the production of the show. It is just a scanned copy of both the original background and the original Kagome and Sota cels (Those cels and the original background for that shot were not sold with your IY cel). The seller often does this so the buyer gets a nice background that completes the screenshot of the scene for the cel that they buy. (It's sometimes hard to find all the cels available for one scene because there might be 10 different cels to animate Inuyasha in a scene while there's only 2 or something to animate Kagome. If you're unable to get one of those Kagome cels, at least with the image scanned into a copy background, you can present the full scene without owning the cel. ^^)

I've purchased a setup like this from the same episode where only the cel of Inuyasha and Kagome was for sale while Sota was scanned into the background. Here's what mine looks like:

(You can tell Sota is scanned in with the background because his colors are dullish like the background as compared to the real cel. That Sota cel exists somewhere, either in the seller's hands or in another's collection, but I don't have it myself.)

Thanks for the information.  I have a few cels from assirted scenes, and a few of them did not come with backgrounds.  So I am still hunting through the series for them.  But my favorite is probably the one of Kagome climbing the spider-head's web to save human Inuyasha with tears in her eyes.  That one came with both the A and B cel and what looks like the original background on stiff paper stock.

You're welcome! And that's a very nice cel! I've actually been wanting a cel from that sequence since it's such a cute scene of Kagome helping out Inu. I really like that she has the Tetsusaiga in hand. (I like cels where characters are holding/wearing something out of the ordinary. )

I actually have a cel of Inuyasha from the same episode that comes from a few scenes before yours. ^_^

That's amazing!  I have a cel just a few frames earlier than that.  Here's the scan.  Most of my scans are really shrunk down for uploading.  I made them at a resolution that produced a 3000 pixel wide image.

Hahaha that's great! I love finding sequence mates to cels I own! Though I have to admit I like yours a wee bit better than mine. xD I wish the Spider Demon's hand wasn't blocking Inu's hair so much in mine. (For a human Inuyasha cel, the hair is the most valuable thing to see haha.) You've got a really nice shot of him.

Very nice! Inu has a really great facial expression in this one. (For once he isn't grumpy. xD) And isn't it great when cels come with the complete setup? It's even better when you aren't expecting it. That's how my Kikyo and Kagome one arrived (the one I posted earlier). It came with the original background and a bunch of extra genga and douga too. I also have the original setup for this one of Inuyasha in his mortal form:

You're right; and that's a really cool picture of Inu in one of his rare moments of mortality.  I have one more action cel that is already scanned and uploaded.  I had to look hard for this one because it was part of a really fast action scene where the whole sequence on that background was only about 5 cels.  It was in episode 92 when he was being chased by the clay soldiers:

I still have one cel, though, that I haven't been able to locate in the series.  It is an extreme close-up with no background.  I have been looking for 2 years, but I haven't yet matched it up with anything.  I can find close scenes; but no identical match.  I cropped it to approximate video size before uploading (I also thought it might make my search easier).

 

You've almost inspired me to get to work scanning my remaining cels.  If only I didn't have so much to do.

That's a nice action cel you have there! I like when cels capture the movement of a weapon as it's pretty cool to see how they animate them. (Something you don't get to see when the animation goes by too fast) ^_^ Haha and yes, action scenes can be a pain trying to find if they move too quick! This Sesshy douga was stumping me for the longest time because I kept missing his scene even though I was searching through the right episode! (Plus it's a sketch so it makes it that much harder).

Though I do have to say that in comparison to action shots, close up face shots are the absolute hardest to ID! Especially Inuyasha! (His look never really changes. xD) Have you checked the writing on the top of your cel? Sometimes the number of the episode it appears in will be written on top. (Though they don't do it all the time so it could be a random number that doesn't match.) I will definitely keep an eye out for your cel though! Every once in a while I manage to cel ID other people's cels while watching the show, so I'll make sure to keep yours in mind and let you know if I find out. ^_^

And if you ever find the time to scan the rest of your collection, I'd love to see whatever you have. I just love looking at IY cels.

I wish I had the energy and the know-how to wet up a blog site like yours.  It is realy cool; and I love the comments you add to every cel.

I just picked up a ton of new cels and haven't even gotten around to "protecting" them yet.  I usually enclose the plastic cel in a clear report folder, trimmed down to size.  I found that leaving them in direct contact with those bags causes the paint to warp.  After I do that, then I can put them in a new bag (if my local art store has them in stock).

By the way, someone on eBay is unloading cels from "Gap Between the Ages" where Hojo is handing Kagome a book full of recipes in the school library.  They are asking 9.99 plus postage.  True it's not a premium character; but Hojo cels are rare and a scanned copy of the background is included.  I got one of the sequence a few weeks ago; but others keep getting put up.

And thanks for the advice in the Inu close-up; but I didn't find an episode number, just an A-1 key number.

Thank you for the really nice comments on my gallery! I'm really happy to hear that you enjoyed looking at it and reading the comments. ^_^ Though I can't take all the credit for the general coding of it since it's the people who run Rubberslug that make it very easy to set up an online gallery. I just added in the flashy stuff like the scans, screenshots, and videos.

And I'm also in the same boat as you with having to protect my cels! I have to re-bag so many of them. x_x Are the folders you use made of any special type of material? Because using those to protect the paint sounds like a good idea.

Also thank you so much for the heads up about the IY cel on ebay, but ironically enough I already purchased one of those Hojo and Kagome cels! (I just haven't posted it up yet hehe) I think it's a hilarious coincedence that you mentioned it! xD I managed to get the one where Kagome is looking towards the viewer with an awkward smile on her face. Here's a picture of it I've made for my gallery that I haven't posted up yet:

 Though I'm kind of bummed that the Hojo layer doesn't seem to match the same scene as the Kagome one. I think it was like one frame off. Oh well, still a funny setup.

And that's great that you have a Shippo cel from that episode! It's actually one of my favorite Shippo ones. (I tend to get bored of his episodes, but this one was hilarious. I loved when Koryuu tries to mess with the whole Inu gang.) That must be a really cool looking cel. ^_^
