I had a discussion (think it was the First Timers thread) about that very subject and everybody was shocked at the suggestion.  That whole era in the story is a blank; but Sesshomaru was cruel enough and jealous enough to both want revenge on the two people he blamed for his father's death and to want to get his hands on Tessaiga.  I see it as a possibility; but the fact that Inuyasha seems to know nothing of this, when he would have been a target, muddies the picture.
