STORY: 9.5 - Some are saying it's a little rushed, but I just don't get it!
Bwuh? I remember almost everything from the old series (though I only really remembered Moryomaru showing up in one or two scenes in the first series), yet for pretty much the whole middle third of the episode, I really had no idea whatsoever what was going on.
**SPOILERS FROM THE EPISODE BEYOND THIS POINT**
In fact, I still have no idea why Kagura felt she needed to fight Kohaku for no reason in the first place, nor do I have any clue why she suddenly decided she no longer needed to fight Kohaku but rather help him escape. I don't know what relevance Koga had to anything or why everybody suddenly had a hard on for getting their hands on Naraku's heart for no apparent reason. Also, considering how constant and incessant the flashbacks, explanations, and "oh yeah, we were just doing this five minutes ago" reminders to the audience in the first series were, I found it bizarre that there was absolutely nothing in any way to bring people up to speed or even, at the very least, serve as scene setting after the five year gap between episodes.
It really was like they were doing episode 168 (well, knowing how the first series worked, more like 168, 169, 170, and 171) and 167 had just aired a week or two ago. And even then, they would have had a recap either before or after the OP.

The production value of the thing was definitely way up from the first series, though, and closer to what the movies were like. I don't know if that's just because it was episode 1 or if it will be that way throughout, but that, at least, was nice.
Also, hearing Straw Hat Pirates scattered throughout the cast makes me laugh.
