When Kagome took Sota to the hospital, he was carrying the cranes. The episode terrifies you? I can see the depresses part, but Kagome seemed to be the only one who could thwart the little ghost.

Well, yeah, a little girl was about to go to Hell (and barely saved) and she was trapped in a burning building. I know that in the series, this comes to no surprise, since it lives for near death expreriences, but I actually was kind of scared that Inuyasha couldn't get to Kagome on time either. The situation was rather intense...

I saw it more as a "coming into her own" for Kagome. Inuyasha had to learn at some point that Kagome was capable of handling problems on her own. As much as he wanted to protect her, he couldn't in all situations; and she was able to take care of problems that he could not. It raised his estimation of her considerably.

@InuFan: Inuyasha wanted to drop her before he got to know her. He didn't even trust her when she shared food the first time. (Also, in Japanese it is better explained that he was steeling himself to be merciless because that was the only way he could get his hands on the jewel.)

I know... I was just kidding with that bit... Actually, something interesting that I noticed from those first few episodes that goes back to "steeling himself" was that he said that he wouldn't mind killing her to get the jewel (I don't remember the exact wording, but the way he said it had the implication that he didn't want to kill EVEN her, but he would force himself to in order to achieve his objective).
