Kagome A Little Later On good

Some changes, but I still don't see it, but I think the biggest issue was Takakashi's drawing, in the beginning she really couldn't agree on the right look for anyone really, took her a while before they start to look exactly like they did inside the anime.

you have a link thats bad 403 thats what it says

Most of the differences have to do with expression rather than face shape.  Kagome's eyes are always open wider than Kikyo's, generally a marker of innocence and good nature.  They are also drawn rounder, which is usually a marker of youth.  I've noticed that the younger a character is supposed to be, the larger their pupils in relation to their eyes; and really old characters, like Kaede, Myoga, and Totosai, generally have very tiny pupils.

Of course, the pupils of younger characters can shrink to signify surprise, fear, and a few other emotions; but they are large when the character is relaxed.

All the women in InuYasha do, except Kikyo. Sango especially, even in the manga. :smileytongue:

It's customary for the time and place, and it's not that bad, only eyeliner and lipstick which is basic makeup that every girl wears. Hers and Sangos are tame enough to still be refining.

Make up in the Manga I think was just Takahashi's way of making Kagome look a little older, since in the mange everyone she looks like she's 12-13, same with Inuyasha.

In the anime, they took the make-up away and just made her look older.

The size of the pupil relative to the white of the eye also seems to indicate age. The older a character is, the smaller the pupil.

Kikyo - Ah what are you doing to your face!

Kagome - Guy's really like it when you glob it on. Makes it extra sexy.

Kikyo - Gah no they don't!

Kagome - Of course they do! In fact I need more!!! *smears lipstick on her teeth and face*

Kikyo - Stop It!

Kagome -  I mean look at the facts I got your man and according to everyone we look the same. Case I win :smileyhappy:  *smiles with makeup all over her teeth*

Kikyo - :smileymad:

I sometimes wonder if that was supposed to be makeup, rather than some idealized concept of beauty.  When Japanese women put on old fashoined makeup (Heian and feudal era), they generally make their faces completely white and then paint lip color on their lower lip (for the young maiko, as opposed to the full geisha).  Takahashi's girls are rosy and glowing.  This would imply a natural coloration rather than makeup.

Looking at Kagome's lips, you might be right, those could be the normal colorof natural lips. Sango is the same way.

It wouldn't surprise me if Takahashi was going for a natural beauty look. Considering who Takahashi is.

I also added a Lower lip link in edit on my post.  It seems that the Japanese considered small lips sexy.  All it goes to prove is that we should always be careful about trying to apply our standards of anything to a different culture.

True, true. Cultural conflicts happen so much.

I might be mistaken, but isn't Takahashi and admitted feminist? That might explain the way that they were drawn also.

I don't know if she is a feminist in the way we have feminists.  The culture of the geisha goes back over 1,000 years in Japan and is a strongly matriarchal culture where women hold all the power.  And contrary to Western misconceptions, geisha were not and are not prostitutes.  They are entertainers, pure and simple.  They are the ancient Japanese version of Hollywood and Broadway all rolled up together.  Like Jessica Rabbit said: "I'm not bad.  I'm just drawn that way."

But I do think that Takahashi believes that women have a natural beauty that comes from their souls and shows through on their faces.  That rosy color on the cheeks and even the hints of blue on the eyelids are probably symbolic of character features in the souls of the the persons they represent.  Just look at all the unusual looks the soul reapers have in Bleach.  It may go back to Kabuki theater (which I understand started with the geisha) and even Noh.  The makeup and features of the masks are part of a code like eye shape and size is.  They are meant to tell us something about the character in the story.

I'm sure someone's already said this, BUT: In the anime, they don't look a like at all, but in the manga, they could pass as twins. I don't know why that is, but...that's the way it is... >~>
