It's about time I had the episodes watched by Monday...

So it seems like just about the only bit of good to come from last week's devastating conclusion was Mitsuko stumbling across the full plans to the Gemini circuit in the ruins of that guitar (which always seemed to mysteriously vanish every time Jiro transformed into Kikaider, but whatever). As admirable as it was for Mitsuko to get right on analyzing the data, it was good to see her realizing what was truly important and lending some comfort to poor Masaru. It was interesting to see the concept of balance that Komyoji originally intended to build into the Gemini, as that's something Jiro's been dealing with for the whole series. Speaking of which, that was some total ROBOT SMASH action going on there. (I loved how all of the wrecked cars exploded spectacularly, as they should in any good action movie.) That Saburo, or should I say Hakaider, is one magnificent bastard, isn't he? At least Jiro managed to not kill anyone before Saburo stopped whistling. Smart thinking on Mitsuko's part to realize exactly where Jiro would be trying to lie low; unfortunately, Saburo was able to track him down almost as easily. Again, Jiro's conscience proved stronger than musical control, and we got some awesome super-robot-on-super-robot action. Jiro didn't even let losing an arm phase him, though Saburo got the better of that cliff dive. And then, when Saburo has him dead to rights...he up and leaves again, but not before delivering yet another bombshell. Ouch, Komyoji.

Gill has one hell of a setup at Dark headquarters: mass-produced robot minions, a death ray, the works. (Hullo, brainless Komyoji in a can.) Interesting to see him stymied by Saburo's seeming independence...for a purpose-built killing machine, he seems to take a lot of personal pleasure in doing things his way. Good thing Komyoji was into the underground bunker thing before he lost his gray matter, since Team Kikaider needed that rest desperately after getting physically and emotionally stomped. (Awesome crappy acting, Hattori and Etsuko.) Apparently, Mitsuko was a quick study in robotics, though I don't think it ever helped her understand her father all that much before now. Nice new outfit, too. That was a rather sweet heart-to-heart under the stars; the fact that Jiro didn't want to risk tinkering with his developing emotions really reflected his burgeoning "humanity." And then...woah now. Did...did they just...? O_O Um...guess Komyoji gave him the full hardware package. *cough* Aaanyway, that interesting little scene aside, the newly-armed (and...um...nah, not going there...) Jiro gave us some awesome bike-on-bike action (seriously, is there anything cooler than robots in a chopper duel?), and then it was time for Fight Night Round 2. Saburo apparently continues to frustrate his so-called master at every turn; he's a crack shot with that laser pistol. A solar plexus shot and some conflicting emotions on both sides, and we find out just what's going on inside Saburo's head: namely, Komyoji's own head. Have fun with that one, Mitsuko.

Just one episode left in the series proper. I have no idea where the story will leave off for the OVA, but it should be an interesting finale.

oki i watched eps. 5 and 6 little late for this buuut better late then never

uhmm.. omgawd that villian bat dude in ep. 6 is like soo awesome gaaaah i hope like.. he stays cuz idk he looks soo coooollll! wen i becomea villian someday i hope im like him! or professor gill cuuuz hes awesome lookn too! anyways, im glad to see jiroh wanting to go and see uhmm.. watshername ya chick idk i can never rmember it even tho i try, ya so yay! go back and see her and be happy!

oh and ep. 5 was cute awww strange mysterious guy meets sweet lady who likes to take in stranges awww cuuttee they should have a spinoff series! buuut aaaaah sad he died T_____T they could revive him as a robot YAY! ^__^

The brainless doctor lying on the table reminds me of the Star Trek episode 'Spock's Brain'.  If no one here is familiar with that one, it is quite possibly the worst Star Trek episode ever.

I know this is kind of early, but could we figure out what we are watching next some time soon?  I need to know what DVDs to take to school with me, and I'm sure I'm not the only one in this situation.

I've been in that situation myself (though I was the idiot who lugged his entire DVD collection, which was thankfully smaller than it is now, to school and back each year), so I'd be fine with trying to come to a consensus in the next week or so. I think the last time I put together a comprehensive post on the really old-school [as] properties, I was of the opinion that we'd exhausted just about all of the good and/or feasible series from among them; I'll have to go back and double-check, though. If that is the case, then we could pick something from among the series that [as] has lost the rights to more recently, something like Samurai Champloo, or Paranoia Agent, or Evangelion. Although it's a relatively recent license loss, Eureka seveN would be a particularly easy option, since Anime News Network is posting free streams of the whole series in both English and Japanese. A more out-there option might be to do an [as] movies thread, and hit up a few of the films that have been shown over the years. Before we get anywhere else, I'll go digging through my old posts and see what I came up with.

Crap; I forgot that I was supposed to be looking up info on possible future series this week. I did some digging with the handy-dandy advanced search function, and I found a few posts I made in previous Old School threads about the same subject. A good place to start is to look at the full list of [as] expired series on Wikipedia (they also have the list of movies, if we ever decide to go that route). Most of what I'm posting here comes from this post I made in the Blue Gender thread; don't read it if you haven't seen that series, though, as it's at the bottom of a big post about the finale. Keep in mind that we've already covered Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf's Rain, Trigun, Outlaw Star, s-CRY-ed, Blue Gender, and now Kikaider, so those are off the list.

The big divide among past [as] series is between the truly old-school titles, ones that haven't been aired in several years, and the more recent series that [as] only lost the rights to in the past year or two. The majority of the series we've watched fit into that first category, and the last two definitely have, so it might be a good time to try something newer. I'll still go over the older stuff, just for kicks. In no particular order, what we have left in that category seems to be Pilot Candidate, Lupin the 3rd Part II, the original Mobile Suit Gundam, Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory, Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket, Reign the Conqueror, Case Closed, Tenchi Muyo!, and Yu Yu Hakusho. As much as I love Lupin, it's probably out by default for not being very discussable and being only half-licensed (); Case Closed is in the same boat for being ridiculously long in Japan and not having much of a narrative story progression. (I know that both of those shows had only limited portions shown on [as], but I don't think people would just want to stop watching at a particular episode.) I've heard good things about Yu Yu Hakusho, at least as far as shounen goes, but that's also a substantially long series, and I don't know how much discussion fodder it has. Pilot Candidate gets a lot of derision for basically being unfinished, so we'd probably want to avoid that. Reign definitely seems to get little but vitriol around here, so I don't think that's exactly on my list, at least. Tenchi Muyo! might be a bit light on discussion fodder too, and it'd take some doing to pick through the numerous sequel OVAs and spin-off series. And the original Mobile Suit Gundam, while an immensely important title in the history of anime, is decidedly very old-school in nature, and there are another few series beyond the two OVAs set in the Universal Century continuity, which I think would make it a somewhat difficult choice. As you can see, there isn't a whole lot to work with among the older series.

As far as the newer series go, by going down the Wiki list, we have Eureka seveN, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Paranoia Agent, Samurai Champloo, and Trinity Blood remaining. Out of those, I'd recommend ditching Trinity Blood outright, as it wasn't exactly of the highest caliber. I'd personally be just fine with any of the remaining options, since I think that each of them holds a lot of opportunity for discussion. (And on a personal level, I own all of them, so they'd be easy enough for me to watch.) From those four, Eureka would be particularly convenient, as the entire series will soon be available via free legal streams in both English and Japanese at Anime News Network's site, but any of them would serve just fine for our purposes.

So...there you have it, or at least my opinion on it. What do you guys think?

Having just finished both Eureka 7 and Samurai Champloo, my vote either goes to one of the older Gundam shows (in particular Stardust Memory since I haven't watched that yet) or Neon Genesis Evangelion.  If we do EVA, I'd suggest we do End of Eva as well, since that is the "real" ending.

The problem with Gundam is that we'd essentially have to do the original series first (or at least the summation movies, which I don't think were ever dubbed), since they kick off the entire Universal Century conflict. That's a bit of a time commitment, but more importantly, I'm not sure how many people would go for the sheer age of the artwork and animation. There's also the fact that [as] didn't show quite a bit of the UC material, so everyone would have to go off and watch an additional series or two if we didn't try to cover them here. I'm not saying that we shouldn't do it at some point, but those are just some things to consider. Eva would definitely work well for our purposes, though, and I do agree that End of Eva would be required viewing afterwards (not so much Death & Rebirth, as that's not much more than a recap).

Mobile Suit Gundam, to the best of my knowledge was completely dubbed.   For someone like me, I have no problems digging up an old show.  Hell, right now I'm enjoying myself with some old titles like Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Fist of the North Star.

Also as far as voting is concerned, put me down for Mobile Suit Gundam.  It's been a good long minute since I saw that.  Good times.
