Probably through filters, digital editing, or a combination of the two...
That and the snazzy wardrobe selections.

The show looks 'old' because it is 'old', as in, originally created in the 1930s by very forward-thinking scientists and engineers. The video (forward-thinking, remember) was then placed in a vault where it was stored in a hypaboric chamber until the chamber automatically opened in the 2000s when the control computer determined it was time. The sons of the sons carried out their duty well and now humanity is further educated at just the proper Societal Structure Point (SSP).
Wait until you see what they're working on for the 2070s!

Not to be an ahole but how do you not get the main joke that this show is supposed to look like old educational tapes?
What's with the proliferation of posters with anime avatars who don't "get" shows like this and Xavier? I'm not making a general statement, seriously, go look back at that board.

Especially right after we've had Garth Marenghi's Darkplace!

So it's like a sciencey version of Animaniacs?

Yeah..I always wondered how they do that. Lol but I guess it's only logical that they use that type of film used in the 70's. Lol slap on the forehead moment. I like the show. British comedy is always great..they're clever, and not everyone gets it. I especially like the part at the end where he joins the last two of his words together to conclude the show. Hahaha
