"Question for Dino: Did David Cross have alot of influence in the subject matter of this episode?
Because alot of the details for "The Belush" are eerily similar to David Cross' noted opinions on him. What with the cigar smoking, blues singing, and eye brow raising..... I bet he did."
All David really did was do the voice. He really didn't have a part in the writing except for one or two adlibs. The eyebrows, blues singing and cigars is pretty universally known. We did have an inside guy who was a writer's assistant and ended up writing the first draft of the script who was also a writer's assistant and then wrote on According To Jim: Mike Murphy. He told us a lot of crazy stories. I really liked the idea of giving him a lone writing credit on the episode and then having Cross play Jim. A real one-two punch. So that's what I did.
As for Belushi and the look: a few of the early episodes may have spots where it looks like there's less animation because it was early in the process, and being a new studio, we had to work with a few animators we hadn't had a lot of experience with yet. A couple of them turned out to be "corner-cutters" and had to be let go. That happens in every stop-motion show I've worked on. I think the reason it's so prominant here is because a lot of this season looks so good. We had a lot of great animators who do masterful work. Wait until you see H.P. LOVECRAFT'S ####! this Sunday. You'll see what I mean.
