It makes me sick, because to this day it still doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
The history of Moral Orel is pretty much the narrative of everything that's wrong with our society and the modern media. Moral Orel wasn't just a comedy, it was a comedy with a story. A story that mattered; a story that had the balls to stand up and look its viewers straight in the eyes and tell them the world is fuuuuuudgeed up. It wasn't just story about a misguided ten year old and his conflicted world views, it's a story about the world that he lives in too. Dino and his team didn't just make another surreal comedy that relied on timing and sight gags, or even a heartfelt character study; they made a real world full of people with real problems and horrible secrets. They made something that mattered, that held weight.
Moral Orel was a show that needed to happen, and no one even knows it exists. Hell, it barley even has a cult following. No it wasn't funny all the time, and no it wasn't perfect; but god **unce** it it deserves better than this. Comedy isn't just about satire; it isn't just about calling people out on the most obvious of mistakes and their blatant stupidity. Any idiot with a computer can write comedy like that. You go and ask a professional writer how easy it is to write a dark, meaningful comedy; I want you to ask just so I can have the satisfaction of knowing they spit in your face. Moral Orel knocked you to the ground and then pulled you back up over and over again until you realized that, all along, you were the joke. That's what the best comedy does. That's what Moral Orel did.
No other network would have ever shown this, would have ever even touched this show. But what am I saying, [adult swim] gave up on it too. That's fair, and I'm not going to argue with that decision; but it just makes the point all too clear. We aren't willing to face ourselves and our decisions, we want to laugh away the pain and forget it ever existed. It's so **unce** pathetic, because even while typing this I know I'm one of those people. I laugh away the pain.
Frankenhole is premiering next month alongside Moral Orel, but it doesn't matter. Frankenhole looks as if it will hold little to no continuity between episodes though in the end it really doesn't make a difference, we've already chosen not to listen. Or maybe we didn't, I don't know.
Why am I posting this now? Who knows. Maybe I just want a network that isn't afraid to run shows like this, and has enough foresight to see that it deserves to fully mature. I suppose that's my real problem, that a show like Moral Orel didn't get the chance it deserved. Do I want [adult swim] to become that network? No, not really. They are doing some great things for television, amazing things, but I'm starting to believe that they aren't the right people for shows like Orel. I'd like to see them mature into something of that caliber someday, but I don't think anyone will give them that chance and, in the end, it would probably be better for everyone if they didn't take it.
So, why am I posting this now? Because I don't know.
People have said this **unce** time and again, and it never mattered.
And it never will matter.
Here's to Dino, Adsit, and Jay. I hope they find better success with Frankenhole, god knows they've earned it.
