You brought so much to Reverend Putty, he's one of those animated characters on the block that really has a nailed presence to it. There seemed to be some level of investment there on your part, do you ever miss playing that character?

Thanks!
Reg Show was one of those rare, wonderful gigs that I actually straight-up booked. I didn't know anyone connected to the project. I wasn't even sure what the copy meant, to tell you the truth: "Two ties! You don't know what I'm throwin' NEXT, baby!" I mean, what the hell does THAT mean? Devoid of context, I didn't know if the line referred to neck ties, railroad ties, or light S & M. The character seemed brash, though, a little goofy and wreckless, so that's the energy I went with. I got called back and read for J.G. and some other important folks, then booked the Cartoonstitute pilot, which was released on YouTube. A LONG time passed, and by the time the call came, I had written it off. SO glad they went with me.
J.G. is genuinely one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. I keep waiting to see him freak out and act like a jerk under stress, and it keeps not happening. He's funny, smart and really good at what he does (which is annoying, considering that I still couldn't find my butt with both hands when I was his age.)![]()
Yeah, when WILL we see merchandise? CN, wanna take that one?
Do I have a blast when I work? YEA-yuh! I have the Best Job In the World. I mean, I don't know the nuclear bomb launch codes, Nike isn't asking me to be a spokesperson, and I'm in no danger of winning an Oscar, but all those jobs sound... stressy. I go to work in shorts and a t-shirt and read really funny stuff with wonderful people. What's not to love?
There are a number of things that have happened that made me rotfl, but probably the best to imagine, if you weren't there, is that our engineer, Robert, is very fast on the board, and he can take that odd body noise you made during that take, or the thing you said that's REALLY embarassing out of context, and he can throw it back at you almost immediately. So just imagine the most embarassing noise you've ever made, or the stupidest thing you've ever said, and picture it being played back to you, just as you originally did it, over and over for several hours between takes.
By the way, Robert, if you're reading, I still plan to pay you for not making that one thing public; I PROMISE. Just wait 'til I get the next check.
It's my pleasure to be here. You fans ROCK!

A bunch. I miss the Rev a bunch.
I think MO went away too soon, but I love the way Dino wrapped it up. To all the folks that thought the show was too dark, I refer you to the final moments of the final episode.
As an actor, it's easy to invest in great writing, and that was great writing. I hope we hear more of it some day.

Hello William,
What's your take on the Ribgy character? Just wondering, VA's usually see a character in a more deeper sort of way than most.

One thing I really loved about MO was that it was animated to our performances. It's usually the other way around; the animation, to some degree, dictates your read. When the Rev had a sermon, I would stand at a podium and deliver it to the mic, and that was really helpful to me, as a stage-trained actor.
The people at those sessions were brilliant comedy writers, and I usuallly felt like I couldn't contribute at that level. Dino Stamatopoulos, Scott Adsit, Jay Johnston - these are REALLY funny guys, and they often came up with stuff on the fly. While I was always welcome to pipe up, I usually felt like the game was a little over my head. I tried to make up for that with the committment of my reads.
Loved working with those guys. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I think he's just your average, young, mammalian high school dropout covering for his insecurities with a dose of "f__ck you."

Rigby's greatest flaw is his sensitvity. He seems brash, but that's only because he gets hurt so easily.
And I pattern him after my step-son, a little.

I think that, like the great cartoons of my youth, it has appeal for both adults and children. A savvy creator knows that he or she has to make a cartoon that kids will love, but adults will at least tolerate; otherwise, the channel gets changed.
My favorite comments about the show come from young fathers who watch it with their boys; I think that's pretty cool.

Yeah, he does get hurt really easily, so I don't blame him for being the way that he is.
So who out of the Regular Show characters would you say is a lot like you?

Ah. Excellent question. Some would say it's the only one that matters.
Well, J.G. is a lot taller than me, so he'd probably out-punch me, so he might win.
On the other hand, J.G. is a lot taller than me, so I'd probably be hitting below the belt, so I might win.
