So I'm just going to borrow this post I put in Trunks' thread since it would probably be a good idea to have it here too.
So hey, since Moribito is now basically official, I figured it would make sense to repost this little rundown on the series I wrote last June (conveniently enough) as part of my analysis of the best anime of the first half of 2007. This way those of you unfamiliar with the show can have some idea of what it's about and why you should care.
ZOMG SPOILARZ FOR EPISODE 1! BAIL OUT!
Seirei no MoribitoIf you've been wondering what the director of Stand Alone Complex (and his team) have been doing aside from Solid State Society lately, wonder no more.
Seirei no Moribito, known in English as
Guardian of the Sacred Spirit, is an absolutely gorgeous looking piece of Asian-flavored fantasy. Balsa is a badass spear-wielding traveling warrior who happens to save the life of the Imperial Prince and catches the eye of the Empress. Turns out the kid's got some bad juju, is possessed by a spirit, and has been marked for assassination by his father. Poor little dude. Left with little alternative, Balsa accepts the job of serving as the boy's bodyguard, and the two escape the palace in secrecy immediately, only to be hounded by the Emperor's hunters. Now she has to protect the kid's life, fight off the hunters, and try and find a way to free him from his curse before it's too late. People who found Stand Alone Complex's talking "tedious" are probably not so welcome here, as there is almost as much political intrigue and expository dialogue here as there is in that series, despite the radical shift in subject matter, but that also simply means that it's a rich and dense piece of fantasy with a detailed and complex world. It also has some of the coolest weapon combat you're going to see in a TV anime, and the fight at the start of episode 3 in particular is definitely worth the price of admission. This is high gloss, high production value, Production I.G quality at its best. Just expect there to be as much slow-paced talkiness as there is high energy combat.
