Well, I posted a bunch of clips from the tube of you last night, but it looks like the mods pulled the post.  If you want to go find them yourself, here are the timestamps (if you get a different posting, they'll only be in the approximate place):

Episode 1  (2/3) 7:12, 7:22,  (3/3) 3:50, 3:57, 4:24.   Ten seconds between the first two usages, 7 seconds between the next two, and again half a minute later.

For the hell of it, I randomly picked episode 9 too. (1/2) 1:05, 4:10, 10:03, 10:15   (2/2) 8:50   Oh yeah, episode 10 at  0:40 (didn't look further).

<>

And remembering Torogai, episode 5 (low audio)  4:05, 4:45  I only looked at the first part, so there's probably more in that episode, but 40 seconds apart?  I think I've made my point.

If it doesn't bother you, that's great.   But don't tell me I'm imagining it.  :smileyhappy:

I wrote up a reasonably-long response to those clips you posted contesting your point, but it seems to have been removed along with your original post. I'm going to try to see if I can't get the text of it from the mods, because I frankly don't feel like trying to piece together what it was I said. :smileytongue:

Well since my point was "I wanted to bash the ADR writer over the head every time one of the characters said that something was 'incredibly ____,' and that occurred 2-4 times every episode, sometimes more," and short of logging every use in every episode I proved that that was true, I'm not sure what's left to contest.  Whether that's excessive or bothersome or not is up to you, so I don't see much point in squabbling over that.

You're welcome to bring up a different point to argue though.  :smileyhappy:

My counterpoint to your point was more along the lines of contesting your definition of "frequency" and getting into a more general outlook on viewing entertainment, so I still think there's at least some point in posting it. (Plus, I don't want the stuff I write to be wasted. :smileytongue:) Since the mods were awesome enough to dig the post up for me, I'll re-post it here; if you really think that it's nothing more than us head-butting over our respective personal opinions, then I won't go any further with it.

You're exaggerating it in that it isn't nearly as prevalent as your "valley girl" speech would have suggested. Yes, in the first two clips you mentioned, I acknowledge that the word is used twice or three times within a relatively short span of time, but in the second clip, that's because Balsa is repeating her earlier statement verbatim to further reinforce her point. As for your later examples, I don't see how using the word five minutes apart (or even more so, ten) construes any sort of negative pattern; unless they're picking the episode apart as you have, your average viewer isn't going to remember the precise phraseology of a random line from half an episode ago. Perhaps the scriptwriter was a bit too attached to this particular word and should have consulted a thesaurus a few more times than he/she did, but it's certainly not a deal-breaker for the entire dub.

To be perfectly frank, I wouldn't have noticed these instances if you hadn't pointed them out specifically, and I am somewhat surprised that they stood out to you to such an extent. But then again, I do remember you being incredibly (hee) nit-picky about certain aspects of the Monster dub, so maybe it's to be expected. And I don't know, maybe that approach to viewing your entertainment works fine for you, but from where I'm sitting, it seems like a great way to utterly destroy the enjoyment that can be garnered from a generally-good work. I'm willing to forgive slight flaws (and I consider the higher-than-normal usage of a particular word to be very slight) if the work as a whole is doing its job for me, and the dub for Moribito more than fulfilled my expectations in just about every aspect. I'm sorry that it didn't do the same for you, but based on the reaction to your post, I'm guessing that you're in the minority.

(And I tend to use the hell out of the tongue smiley in general, so it's not just your candy-coated shell. :smileytongue:)

Well, like I already said, YMMV on whether it's too much or not.  I don't need to convince you that it's too much, only that I wasn't exaggerating when I said how much it was.  :smileyhappy:

While this particular thing annoys me greatly, I actually like this dub very much.  I think it's one of the best dubs Bang Zoom! has done for awhile now.  It's almost like while Funi is getting some new blood in Texas, everyone in L.A. is bored of it all now and just going through the motions.  But Moribito has been a nice surprise, not least because Kristi Reed was the ADR director and she's been behind some of the worst dubs I've heard.  Of course, she's also behind this script, so there ya go.

Fair enough. We'll call the point acknowledged and the individual opinions stated. :smileyhappy:

When you're referring to Kristi Reed, are you just talking about her as a director or in general? I hadn't heard of her before now, but looking at her ANN page, she's been involved with at least one or two dubs that I'd consider to be good. For one, she apparently did script work for Champloo, which was fantastic, and I didn't have any significant complaints about Last Exile or Witch Hunter Robin. That's all I've seen, though.

Mostly as an ADR director.  Ghost Slayers Ayashi dub was just awful, and it had an amazing cast (Blum, Freeman, et al).  Blade of the Immortal dub wasn't much better.  And I'm still dismayed with how she had Steve Cannon play Hakkai as gay in the Geneon dubs of Saiyuki.  I recognize and admit that I'm a little prejudiced against that dub because of the cast change, but they had some of my favorite VAs in those roles, and those were not exactly their best performances.  (actually, I've always felt that way about that dub, even though I didn't realize until just now that she was behind it!)

I dunno, she just seems to have a knack at coaxing out the most wooden performances from her casts no matter how good they are.  That's why I was so pleasantly surprised at how good the dub for Moribito turned out.  :smileyhappy:

Wow, you know the names of such obscure people that do jobs like that?  I'd call that a little obsessed... :smileysurprised:

Oh, and good grief, Somedude has started in about Moribito in a thread in General AS Discussion that has gone on for posts and posts in that thread.  Of course, Moribito had many staunch defenders.  But yeesh, the show is not even on AS anymore I say give it a rest.

I don't think ADR director is exactly an obscure job.  But for some reason I've been fascinated by credits for as long as I can remember.  I never left a movie theatre (when I saw movies in theatres) before the credits rolled (not that I ever remembered anybody, but the titles of the jobs were interesting, like "footsteps editor.")

That's why what they do to credits on tv now really bugs me, and worse, buying the DVD (for anime, at least) doesn't always make it better since they sometimes just list the cast without saying who they voiced (Geneon was notorious for that format).  I remember sort of inadvertently following the career of Deb Munini as she gradually moved up from assistant engineer to post production assistant to recording engineer for Media Blasters.  :smileyhappy:  For some reason, maybe because female engineers are few and far between, as I kept seeing her name, it stuck in my head.  Don't know the first thing about her, but I was somehow pleased to see her finally get her own gigs without being someone's assistant.  :smileyhappy:

The only reason I even know anything about Reed is that the Ayashi dub was so bad I went to find out who was responsible.  Then I noticed that she was responsible for some other dubs I didn't like.  Not obsession, just a longtime interest not quite approaching the level of hobby.

I wouldn't say the director of an entire dubbing project is an obscure position (it just means that Gina has done her homework... more homework than I have bothered with:smileytongue:). Now, if she knew the names of the people who got the coffee and did the make-up for the VAs, then she would be obsessed. :smileyvery-happy:

Oh really? Well, I know which thread I'm going to next. :smileywink:

Interestingly enough, some of the best dubs I've traditionally come across, including many of the series [as] has aired in the past, seem to have been directed by dub actors themselves. Both Kirk Thornton and Wendee Lee are listed as directors on the Bleach dub, which in my opinion has been excellent as a whole; Mary McGlynn directed the fantastic Wolf's Rain, GITS: Stand-Alone Complex, and above all else, Cowboy Bebop; and Lia Sargent directed several, including the second half of Big O, back when she was active. Likewise, Mike McFarland is one of FUNi's big directors, and he's also voiced a number of roles in their dubs. I kind of feel like the dubbing process is something that really lends itself to having someone with personal experience direct the process, since it involves a rather unique set of skills when compared to acting in general.

I've noticed that myself.  :smileyhappy:   Taliesen Jaffe is another who directs quality dubs (I was so hoping he'd do Monster) and also shows up behind the mic (and in front of the camera back in the '80s).  On the other hand, I think Karl Willems is an excellent ADR director, but the only VA credits I've seen for him was as an extra in Galaxy Express.  So while experience on both sides is a plus, it doesn't seem to be a requirement.  :smileyhappy:

Ok, so like... what's a Best Boy and a Gaffer, and what does A.S.C. stand for, and stuff? :smileytongue:

But naw, I hear ya... though, I've never gotten that in-depth with stuff, I do like to watch credits and will dig into something if I am interested.  Usually just actors that I care about, though.  Here's a fun fact, the lady who plays Kaede is the mother of the guy who played Titus' brother on Titus!  (Yet another awesome show Fox cancelled...)

Best Boy is chief assisstant to the Key Grip (in charge of all the camera rigging and dolly tracks and stuff like that), or the Gaffer, who is the head of the electrical and lighting unit (that's why you sometimes hear duct tape called gaffer's tape).  The word gaffer is a shortening of "grandfather," but I don't know why they used to call the electrical wizard grandfather. :smileyhappy:  A.S.C. is the American Society of Cinematographers.  And I didn't have to wiki any of that.  :smileywink:

Gaffer's tape or gaff tape is usually matte black (though more colorful varieties of it are used by camera departments and the like, mainly to either label their property or mark out camera or actor positions or movements on the floor) and fabric based. It is also used due to its ability to stick and hold firm when needed but also be able to pull off easily and cleanly. Duct tape, by contrast, is vinyl on top of fabric and doesn't remove nearly as easily and almost always leaves some of its tacky residue behind.
