Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

Pretty much what the title says: This thread is for the purpose of telling who your favorite character from Moribito is, and why, if you want to.  Absolutely NO SPOILERS!

Tanda's my favorite.  I think that he's really nice, and he's so loyal to Balsa.  He's always there for her to help her out however he can even though he can't fight.  He's skilled with herbs and medicines, and he's got some of Torogai's cool powers.  And he's smart and clever too, and he knows a good bit of nature stuff.  I really like how he's laid-back, but at the same time worries about Balsa.  I think that it's also really interesting how he has, as he puts it, the perspective and feelings of "some da..mn soldier's wife" (or however he put it exactly); I can't think of many male characters who are in that position or who feel like that.  To top it all off, even though it's not really relevant here, I really like his VA.

Shuga is a pretty close second.  He has such a determination to seek the truth, and throughout the series has been a very reasonable character who has been quick to hear his opponents out instead of just refusing to listen to them because he's been told that they're the enemy.  Even though as a Star Reader and Yaku magic-weaver, he and Torogai come from very different places, he's very cooperative with talking to her and combining knowledge.  Also, I think that he has a cool character design.

This anime is a rarity in that there are no major characters that I don't like.  But if I have to pick Chagum is my choice.  He has one of the most amazing character arcs of any character in any series.  He's truly of noble character, and I don't mean by birth by birth - by nature of his kindness, his bravery and his dignity.  I think he's remarkably complete and realistically drawn (as all the characters are, here) and someone I can truly empathize with.  He bears so many burdens that he didn't choose, and does it all with grace and stoicism.

I know what you mean; all of the major characters have really likeable personalities and traits. 

I agree with you that Chagum's character arc is amazing.  I think that he by far has changed and developed more than any other character in the show.  He started out a sheltered noble who knew almost nothing about a commoner's life, and then when forced to live that life, he actually adapts quickly.  He has such an eagerness to learn and to adapt to others' ways of life, and I love how he (and his brother) know so much about animals and nature.

The second major time that he has to develop/adapt, imo, is his coming to terms with the burden he has to bear, and the implications of what may come of it.

All in all, I think that he's the character that has surprised me the most, in terms of he didn't turn out at all like I thought he would; he has developed beautifully into a great character.

My choice is obviously Balsa; it's rare to come across a female lead who's not only strong and beautiful, but also not in her teens. All of her interactions with the rest of the cast are enjoyable, but in particular I love her relationships with Chagum and Tanda the best. With Chagum, she simply started out as his bodyguard, but the more time they spent together the closer their bond grew until she'd become his surrogate mother. With Tanda, they've known each other most of their lives, yet regardless of her age there's still that awkwardness between them when romantic feelings are involved (mostly on her part, though, Tanda's timing to confess was off).

Hopefully once this superb anime draws to a close the three of them will settle down as a family, that'd be a sight to see...

It would be nice for Tanda and Balsa to settle down together, but I think that Chagum will probably have to go back to the palace.  And probably needs to.  He seems like he would be an extremely capable ruler.

Madam Torugai was one of my favorites: she's a bitter old lady who knows too much lol. I thought balsa was great female character though I wish the series did more with her background than they did. Tanda was an okay character but the whole role reversal relationship he has with Balsa is kinda unusual, based on what time they live in and everything

Sorry to burst everyone's bubble, but I would have to say my favorite character, (for the one episode we get to see him) has got to be Jiguro. He is an amazing spear fighter and makes the most difficult decision of any character in the show. He is forced to defend himself against his closest friends and later to bring up Balsa all on his own. Without Jiguro, there would not be a show at all because Balsa would not have survived and would not be trying to save eight lives as retribution (the eighth and final life, being Chagum's).

Without a shade of a doubt- Balsa!! It;s so rare in anime (or anywhere, really) to find a charascter like her. She's brave, smart, kind, and strong. Unlike a lot of anime females she doesnt show her affection by hitting and punching the men (ahem- Rukia, Kagome. THIS is why I'm Team Orihime, thank you!) . In fact the only time she WILL fght is if someone is attacking her or trying to stand in her way. THIS is a REAL heroine and I wish more anime wuld follow THAT example!
