Do you have to be so pessimistic, mysterious stranger?
Yes, though I have other reasons based on the way things have been going in America.
Anyway, I have kept watch of SyFy's actions through TVTropes, under the section of Network Decay. You know how MTV doesn't play music anymore, how TLC is nothing like it's name is supposed to mean (The Learning Channel), and let's not forget the live action on CN. Other networks have followed a similar pattern, with most of the shows now being Reality TV shows. After all, reality shows cost less to produce. And Syfy has been rebranding itself to eliminate its association with nerds.
Now, you know what really justifies my pessimism? Animax Latin America (I knew that from TVTropes). It was originally a network for anime 24/7. They then began showing alternative programming targeting general audidiences. When the fans of the anime complained about it, the executives responded by cutting off their e-mail and shutting down their forums so they couldn't complain. And then they got rid of the anime. All of it. Finally, they changed their name to Sony Spin. What is it about now? U.S. based reality shows and generic programming, equivalent to the American MTV. This isn't just a problem in the U.S. of A. I don't have that channel, yet I am still pi$$ed!
SyFy is basically following the same route as the other networks. TV networks are effectively dictatorships, and they are fully capable of abandoning their niche to focus on the demographics that are the least expensive and most viable to support. The people who support genres like science fiction and anime, or the so-called "nerd counterculture," may be left without any support from the media, outside of the Internet. And even then, it will leave science fiction creators without a place to air their work.
I speak only of suggestions and little else. Make sure I avoid posting while I am in a fit of rage, plz.
