Anime on Syfy ends June 10, 2011

After 4 years of 2 hour blocks of anime, for 3 and a half years on Monday nights, and enduring the infamous name change, it looks like Manga Entertainment's block is finally giving up the ghost.  The June schedule is up, and though subject to change, this is what it says:

JUNE 9:

1 AM - Star Blazers: Quest for Iscandar (x2)

2 AM - Monster (x2)

JUNE 16: NO ANIME

And it looks like it can't be found anywhere else on the schedule either.  So, that's it.  Anime on Syfy is DONE in a month. :smileysad:

And some of us thought [as] would be first to shed it.  Not so.

This Saturday Night, on [adult swim]: TOONAMI'S BACK, BlTCHES!! A New Bleach Episode (255) kicks us off at Midnight, followed by the SERIES PREMIERES of Deadman Wonderland at 12:30 and Casshern Sins at 1! Then, we've got 3 back-to-back classics: FMA:B Episode 32 "Fuhrer's Son" at 1:30, followed by GITS: 2nd Gig Episode 17 "Red Data" at 2 and Cowboy Bebop Episode 15 "My Funny Valentine" at 2:30! Also, watch lots of [as] ACTN shows including Durarara!!, The Big O, and more online any time you want at http://video.adultswim.com/action/index.html

Elsewhere: New season of ThunderCats continues Saturday at 9:30 AM on CN! Avatar: The Legend of Korra continues Saturdays at 11 AM on Nickelodeon!

Are we sure it's not just taking a break?

I'll be really bummed if they brought out Star Blazers just to fill space before they stopped the block. =\

Yeah, the schedule might not be fully updated. If this really is the end, it won't affect my viewing habits much. But I don't watch any live TV, so whatever.

Sad news for us anime fans. You know I was kinda mad they moved it to Tuesday....then to Thursday. There's really nothing on tv nowadays and I ONLY watch [as] on Saturday nights now.

You know I'm starting to get pessimistic again about the commercial future of anime. Sales have taken a huge hit in the past 4 years, and really never recovered from the advent of piracy/fansubs on the net. The sour economy I'm sure didn't/couldn't help much.

Look @ the sad story of Tokyopop:

th-american-offices.html

I checked out their RV last summer @ AX. Helluva way to go for such a big company. Too bad other manga & anime companies are literally either shrinking or becoming very niche just to survive. The internet is both expanding exposure to anime & also killing it. I wonder if the net will create as many fans as Syfy and [as] did? I somehow doubt it tbh.

I doubt it's gonna end THAT early. It's probably just taking a break, like it did that one time.

If it is the end, then it's gonna be tough finding the rest of the episodes of Star Blazers to watch in... other places.

I don't know if you posted this without thinking, but just consider the ratings of both [as] and SyFy. . .

And now think how many people browse the internet.

Then consider how many countries have ready-access to the internet.

Wow that really **QWOP** the big one :smileysad:.

I wonder if SyFy would be anymore likely to listen to a fan petition than (as) is. I remember when they cancelled Farscape right at a cliffhanger,  there was such a fan outcry that they produced a special to finish up the series. So maybe if this is not just a break thing, they might listen to the fans and bring back anime night.

unless someone has heard anything official, i'd say it is just a break in the schedule.

Pretty much. I watched Ani-Xday a few times, but it never really caught my interest. I've pretty much given up watching anime on TV other than half an hour each Saturday to watch Brotherhood. And even then, I already watched it subbed when it first came out. So meh.

When they start airing Monster they're going to be getting a new viewer right here so I hope they won't stop airing anime. I've never watched before because I always forget what night it's on. xP

Syfy has taken multi-week breaks in the past.

I would wait until we can see July's schedule (or, alternatively, hear an official announcement) before calling it dead.

The writing was on the wall, though. It changed nights twice in 3 months and had its start time pushed back to 1 am.

It could be taking a break but I would guess it is done or will be soon even if it comes back.

I never thought it would last on SyFy. I really enjoyed SyFy picking up anime and making fun of adult swim i the early years. However the anime years are in the past, the time had come and gone even when SyFy picked up anime years ago. Anime is just not on cable TV that much anymore. I only see it on SyFy and adult swim. I don't know how long adult swim will keep it either.

Well that cuts the cord for me and SyFy for the foreseeable future.  Anime and Stargate Universe were the only things left I even half-heartedly followed there. :smileysad:

Well, Manga ent is ultimately owned by Starz, which is owned by NBC/U, so this might just be a break.
Of course, Comcast is now running things at NBC/U, and they are
much more responsive to ratings than the old GE appointed leadership. It will probably be done. It might come back if the economy picks up, and they feel the need to get additional advertising for Manga ent. but since Manga ent hasn't gotten
anything of real note for years, I doubt it.

Hulu is going to be the NBC/U anime outlet of the future in all likelihood. It is much cheaper for them to put up subs of the
titles there with a commercial for the DVDs and then make
crappy reality nonsense for SeeFee.

Manga has a couple new releases scheduled for the fall, so it's not like they're done. Maybe Redline will catch a break and get some airtime on Syfy.

Yeah, I've thought this same thing.  The internet has been a blessing in that it introduces more people to anime and existing fans to more of what's out there, but a curse since anyone who wants to can find manga online in scanlation form and anime in fansub form.  The people who only go to those are expanding the fanbase and killing the industry at the same time.  This is why I have more negative feelings toward scans and fansubs than positive feelings.

It could be possible that they are just waiting for the Fall with a relaunch.
The Manga titles are a bit dated, and frankly stale.

Saturday Anime on Sci-Fi in the 90s was cool.

The current run of anime on Sci-Fi SyFy is dildos.

But I have Netflix and bittorrent, so in the end, I don't care all too much.

Might be the end for the block. Apparently is started back in June of 2007. So the contract might be expiring this year (would have been 4 years). But as others have said, no reason to assume it's gone for good. Just wait until an official announcement or the July or August grids before assuming the block wont be returning.
