Gintama Movie Licensed by Sentai, To Be Dubbed

[ Edited ]
Not only will Sentai be releasing the Gintama theatrical feature on Blu-ray and DVD, but the franchise is also getting an English dub for the first time (directed by Kyle Jones)!

Wonder if they'll ever start dubbing the TV series (or at least the new season)

For that to happen, I think they'd have to get a TV deal, but maybe the movie could generate enough interest?

The most recent of their dubs I'm watching are ef and Broken Blade, which are better than the ones for Guin Saga and Nightraid, so far anyway.  Sure dubs make a show more accessable to non-fans, but there is no way their VAs can make a better cast than the Japanese one, Gintama is just one of those shows.

I'm looking forward to their attempt at making it sellable, at the very least it will be interesting.

Any fan knows that Sugita is impossible to replace though.

Now on twitter! Because I like to pretend people care what I think.

That was directed by Steven Foster, not Kyle Jones.

And it seems mostly like overacting or stiff delivery (and just really awkward writing). The Golgo 13 dub is better, in my opinion. But it doesn't have dat singing.

yeah well suffice it to say the dub of Guin Saga pretty much labeled Sentai as being worse than 4kids, so, that's basically why everyone is worried about the Gintama dub

Did the dub of Guin Saga come out during the ADV era or the Sentai era? One would think they're taking things a bit more serious in the Sentai era, since they're pretty much the only major dubbing company left to actually be challenging Funimation with tons of newly dubbed titles.

Viz seems to be pretty much scaled-down to just Bleach and maybe InuYasha: The Final Act on the anime front, while Media Blasters and Bandai have pretty much called it quits. On the other end of the spectrum, Aniplex is just getting started. I think their dubroll consists only of Durarara!! and Madoka.

So that makes Sentai the runner-up in this scary new world, and hopefully the decision to dub the Gintama movie will pay off well for them. Incidentally, it's like Gurren Lagann in reverse: in the case of that anime, the dub was produced and run on Sci-Fi, but DVD sales weren't sufficient enough for the movies. Now, with Gintama, the studio has decided dubbing the movie can act as a test run to see if dubbing the rest of the series would be worth it.

The moral of the story is: if you wanna see more Gintama dubbed, support the movie.
This Saturday, TOONAMI begins on a discordant note once again with Bleach stuck in Filler Hell with Episode 299 at midnight, but then after that, it's Naruto uncut Episode 27 "Special Report: Live From the Forest of Death" at 12:30. Then, it's Toonami's newest addition One Piece at 1 with Episode 208 and Soul Eater follows that at 1:30 with Episode 14 "Super Written Exam - Heart-pounding, Reeling, and Restless...?quot; Next is IGPX Episode 5 "Come Together" and Eureka 7 follows that at 2:30 with Episode 39 "Join The Future." ThunderCats is still roaring at 3 with Episode 7 "Legacy", then Sym-Bionic Titan plays "The Ballad of Scary Mary", Episode 11 &at 3:30; FMA: Brotherhood continues Season 2 with Episode 28 "Father" at 4 AM, and Cowboy Bebop reprises with "Ballad of Fallen Angels" Episode 5 at 4:30. Finally, if you stay up until 5 AM you're in for a treat: the "Fateful Night in Togenkyo" arc, Episodes 57 & 58 of premiere uncut InuYasha!

My only lament is that Travis Willingham will not be English Gintoki as he is not likely to record for a Seraphim dub.

Just please don't give Gintoki to Chris Patton. Gintoki need's a much deeper voice than that. You can bet Greg Ayres will get Shinpachi and Kagura is a toss up between Luci Christian and Hilary Haag. If neither of them voices Kagura I'll be pretty shocked but not as shocked as I will be if Greg Ayres is not Shinpachi.

At any rate I'm thrilled they got the movie and are dubbing it. I will support it with my money bucks when the time comes and I hope other anime buyers do the same. Then maybe we can get more episodes of Gintama on DVD and perhaps even get a dub for the series as well.

HELPeR for the TOONAMI, Mobile Suit Gundam, Dragon Ball Z, Harvey Birdman and Perfect Hair Forever boards. Feel free to ask me anything on those topics.

Assuming they use that voice cast, Sentai has a secondary voice cast that they use intermittently which doesn't contain any of the Classic ADV actors, the Dubs using the non ADV voice cast are their worst dubs

After Chris Patton's performance in NHK, I think he can handle Gintoki imo. :smileyhappy:

Not sure how I feel about this. Elated that Gintama is getting some exposure, but everyone's pretty much said what I have to say about sentai's dubs.

I'll give you that, though I'm still curious to see how they approach the character in English.

<3 Gintama love that its been licensed. But...

Personally I don't think it should ever be dubbed. I think too many of the jokes will be lost in translation to be honest. Simple as that.

You know, I've heard this for years, and I don't think it's entirely true. Will something be lost in translation? Certainly. Will that stop me from enjoying the dub? Not if it's an otherwise decent adaptation.
