Guilty Crown

Anyone Else Watching?

On Christmas Eve, 2029, the unidentified "Apocalypse Virus" spreads and plunges Japan into a state of emergency in a chaos known as the "Lost Christmas" incident. An international organization known as the GHQ intervenes with martial law and restores order to Japan at the cost of its independence.
Ten years later in 2039, Shu Ouma, a 17-year-old high school student who keeps to himself in school, meets Inori Yuzuriha, the lead singer for Egoist, while visiting one of his favorite places on his way home from school. Shu is a big fan of Inori, a singer who has taken the Internet world by storm. However, he also discovers the other side of her, which is that she is a member of "Undertakers", a resistance group that aims to liberate Japan from the GHQ. Shu starts taking part in the actions of "Undertaker" and the "king's mark" appears on his right hand after the Void Genome in his pocket was shot by a GHQ Endlave. This "mark" bestows on him the power to reach inside another person's body and extract and materialize a weapon from it.

Yes, but it's one of the most mixed bag shows around. Look at this, the scores are everywhere.

I'm watching it. It's fine, but this recent episode frustrated me.

Spoiler
Souta is the biggest idiot in that show.

I'm watching, but as I said a million times, I'm not a huge fan of the show. It's like Future Diary if the anime threw away its own internal logic and had no consistency with its characters. I'm literally appalled by the number of people who are praising Shu for becoming a man in the latest episodes, just because he went dark. It's not like he became more interesting when he became dark. He just switched from wimpy boring character to evil boring character (in a very sudden way, I might add).

That said, the second half of the show is better than the first half, which is quite possibly the worst introduction I've ever seen to a promising show in a long time.

It's stupid.  But I can't stop watching the Shoehrer ruling over his Master Void race and discriminting against the FRanks.

Also I like most of the villains over the rest of the cast. Especially Dan Eagleman.

The show is like a Frankenstein of several others shows (namely Code Geass, though you'll find lots of Eva, Utena, Angel Beats, Death Note, Eureka Seven, and dozens of other shows) all combined to make what must be the most disjointed, unoriginal, poorly written story in recent years. It is absolutely laughable that something like this not only got greenlighted but people are eating it up like flies on sh!t. I really did try to turn off my mind and enjoy both this and Mirai Nikki for kitsch value (which was how I enjoyed silly shows like Star Driver, Black Butler II, UtaPri, and Soul Eater), but both shows have tempted me to take a chunk out of my monitor and eat it, moreso with GC due to the terrible writers that are behind this that not only make the story unengaging at all but the characters are all vile and you really couldn't care less if Lost Christmas 2 killed everyone because it's not like anyone would really care anyway. The writers sure as sh!t don't care, especially since they made 100% sure that the one shred of hope for a character to become tolerable becomes quickly snatched away as if they were watching the audience through their television screens and shouted "People are actually starting to LIKE this character!? NOT ON MY fuuuuuudgeIN' WATCH!", which is essentially what keeps happening to Shu's character as the occasional moment where he becomes a good character is always quickly snatched away by one stupid decision after another.

On a side note, anyone else notice how they never show Kenji, the best character on the show, at all anymore?

I barely remember Kenji because he did so little after he was introduced. And yeah, I can't believe there's not ONE character that I like this in show. It's like The Social Network, only the story is poor. I sort of liked Dan Eagleman because of his cheesiness, but he barely appeared and did nothing. Even some of my most hated anime at least gave decent screentime to a character I liked more.

Also, Shu and Inori...my god, do I hate them. No consistency, no chemistry, no likable personalities, and to make matters worse, it's NOT DONE ON PURPOSE! I haven't seen characters this bad since Twilight.

In regards to the villains, I only liked Dan. Scarface is tolerable, but he's overrated. Daryl just su*cks. The rest, I don't remember them.

A story shouldn't just give people what they want, but also what they didn't know they wanted.

From what I gathered, Dan was the only goodguy in the show.  The rest are commie b*stards.

I don't even understand why Inori exists. She has the personality of a saltine cracker, she doesn't say anything except the word "Shu" in a depressed tone & make #### noises when Shu pulls out her void, when she does get a moment with Shu she would rather be mounting Gai than be with him, and we're supposed to believe that she's not only an important character, but she is also a POP STAR? I guess even wafer-thin characters are important to the plot (like Lala Ru, Rei Ayanami, etc) so that's minor, but a pop star!? Someone this afraid of all initial contact with anyone or anything standing up on a stage and giving a full-on performance? Egoist doesn't even get any attention and is probably the dumbest way a terrorist organization can blow their cover, so it's not even worth mentioning that she is even a member of a pop band unless the writers were really liked Girls Dead Monster and wanted to make sure a band like that was in Guilty Crown. Inori could be replaced with a broom and it would make just as much sense.

I honestly have no idea. Her tasks from what I can remember is to get Shu into the plot, give him a weapon, and sing a song to cure a virus. Other than that, I can't remember jack about what she does. For someone called the main female, she sure doesn't have much screentime. And like you said, wafer-thin characters can be good if used properly. This show doesn't even keep her personality-less behavior consistent. God, what a stupid character.

####, can't people just watch something to enjoy it? does it have to be over analyzed? BTW, you forgot Macross. Music solves everything...

You know what, i'm about to rant.

I'm absolutely fcking tired of film school hippies looking at every TV show or Movie struggling to find some meaning behind what they're watching... have you ever thought that maybe something doesn't have meaning? i mean sure, you can apply meaning to lots of shows, but for fcks sake, they're primary purpose is to entertain... ... ... you know what? god forbid one show have similar theme's to another show... or take queue's from another show... guess what, that's what inspiration is... its seeing something and going "huh, that's cool, but what if ____ happened."

I'm tired for hippies hating on entertaining shows because they don't find some hidden meaning, or some ####. If a show's entertain's me, its alright, if it makes me want to see more, its good, and if i cant wait till the next installment, it's great.

I like Guilty Crown, it entertain's me. I'm excited to see what the Next Episode holds, yes i can see that it's got a bit of Macross, Code Geass and the like. but I liked those shows too.

I don't think anyone was looking for meaning.

I think they were looking for characters that had followable motive, coherent conflict, and consistency in the plot.

From what I saw of Guilty Crown, which was about 11 episodes, I was able to follow the plot only because it was reasonably simple of concept as well as one that's been done many times. But everything about the execution was convoluted and I wasn't able to develop an opinion of anything about it within nearly half the show. It's not that I hate the series. I don't, nor do I really like it, either. That's the problem: sheer, unadulterated indifference. I just stared at the screen blankly waiting for something to happen that would make me want to see more, and it never really had that. There were some nicely animated action scenes; that's fine and dandy. They just weren't enough to make me keep going from episode to episode, particularly when the action was as infrequent as it was. One episode would be a straight action series and the next would be a sloppy blend of high school comedy, high school drama, and sci-fi. I mean, the episode where whathisface betrays Shu; I never, and literally never, care at all if a character is introduced and betrays someone within an episode. I don't care about a character that has had 10 minutes or less of screen time. It's only effective if they've been developed. They played it like "A-ha, gotcha! Didn't see that coming, did you?" and with such little development, it really wasn't surprising. Although the cliffhanger was decent, I honestly didn't give a ####.

That's not a complaint about it lacking meaning. It's an example of poor execution. Execution and author's purposes are two entirely different things. Though, it appeared that Guilty Crown sought to send a message, yet I genuinely had no clue what it could be.

i'm not saying GC is the greatest anime ever, that rant had been building for a long time. GC is enjoyable to me, and the way it was being analyzed reminded me of the way hippies and the way they analyze other shows... and that set me off.

i'm not saying it is... its just that most people i know that claim to be "interested in film and analysis of director techniques" are hipsters... and to me, hipsters are just hippies with slightly better personal hygiene...

on that subject, you do know what a hipsters favorite number between 0-9 is right?
