Oh, man, this series continues to be excellent stuff...and we're only on episode 2! I get so engrossed in the show when watching that the episodes end before I even realize it. That's the mark of a great television series. That impromptu jazz session in episode 2 was ace. The only bad thing about this show is having to wait for the next episode!

Spoilers for episode 2.  Well, there goes the love triangle, I think.  :smileyhappy:  I'm actually happy about that.

I was also surprised by them being Christians.  Mostly because it seems like this is going to be something very significant to the story and not just a "oh btw, they're Christians" character trait.  I'm intrigued to see where they're going with that.

LOL at the stairmaster marathon.  Not only did it show his determination, but it was a wonderfully subtle and organic way of accenting the time period, where stuff like this was not portable and readily at hand.  :smileyhappy:

So far, my only disappointment is the OP and ED music.  I dislike them more with each episode.

Same. I don't mind them, but I wish hoping that they were some jazz-kinda tune instead.

It's kind of a mixed bag for me. I liked the OP a LOT more this time around, but the ED is still very meh.

Granted, part of it is pure bias because YUKI (who does the OP) did the OPs for Honey & Clover.

Agreed, and agreed.

This show really surprised me. It didn't sound at all like something I'd like, but I'm actually loving it.

Yea, I'm hooked. I wonder if since this is in the 60's they will incorporate any famous jazz sessions that happened in Japan during the time (if there are any).

This series is actually pretty amazing. The jam session in episode 2 was the awesomest thing I've heard this week.

Also, the whole Christian thing, despite showing signs of future plot relevance, isn't something new for Watanabe, if you're one who finds that unsettling. Lots of churches were present in Cowboy Bebop, and the Sunflower Samurai in Samurai Champloo led a bunch of Japanese Christians back before the series started (not to mention the cross hidden in one of Fuu's charms).

It was okay to me. Watanabe seems to be able to adapt to any genre, but Kanno's music didn't stand out to me in the first episode. I like the nostalgic feeling and the American jazz (recognized "Kind of Blue" in the background), but I'll wait on this one to finish a season.

Not the fault of the show, but the subtitles were not timed right in the version I watched. Threw me off several times.

The churches in Bebop were just set pieces, though. It looks like Christianity is going to have more of a bearing on the plot this time around.

Yeah, horrible subs isn't the best, but they get episodes out pretty quickly. I suggest whynot subs for sakamichi.

Sentarou was asking Jun about the Tommy Flanagan Trio, a jazz group with standing bassist George Mraz, pianist Tommy Flanagan, and drummer Elvin Jones.

I just looked them up. They're amazing.

Jun's a trumpet player.  He's automatically my favorite.  (But then, I'm biased).

Also Kaoru's little crush on Ritsuko is quite cute, but he's going to have trouble making any progress with her if Sentaro keeps cockblocking him.

Horriblesubs worked fine for me, maybe it's a player problem.

I tried three different players, but they were all the same version of the video. I'll just try a different subtitler.

There's a way to mess with the timing of subtitles in MPC.

I had heard of them, but never actually listened to them before, aside from Elvin Jones who I've heard with Coltrane and others.

I was pretty surprised that he confessed so soon. I'd expected them to draw it out for way longer.

Also, Sentarou was just adorable while he was asking out Yurika.

So glad he confessed this early on. Drawn out angsty confessions are the worst.

Also did anyone else find that scene of Kaoru randomly peeking in on Sentarou and Yurika like weirdly shoehorned in there? Why no context?

Yes, I certainly did.  I was like, wait, what?  At first I thought it was the school nurse coming on to him or something.  I had to look twice to be sure it was her.  Very bizarre.  It also confused me because it didn't seem like enough time had passed between how spastic he started out and then smoothly leaping into back room trysts.

And talk about an odd couple.  She's in for a culture shock worse than Kaoru when she meets his family - who I loved, btw.  :smileyvery-happy:  Still, the spitting watermelon seeds everywhere in the house was a bit much.  The place must be carpeted with seeds.  And man, those kids have just stabbed the #### out of the shoji doors!  :smileyvery-happy:

But yeah, I didn't really see this sort of quadrangle coming, or maybe I was just expecting/hoping for them not to play that.

I suppose that's possible, but it was so fragmented I couldn't tell.  How could you tell where they were?

Seriously, with the curtain and all the bandaids on his face, I thought it was the school nurse's office at first.  :smileyhappy:
