What's important in anime?

[ Edited ]

So BigGlobe.jp did a poll about what Japanese fans look for when deciding which anime to watch, and here are the results.

1. Story (506)

2. Character (342)

3. Voice actors (335)

4. Design (265)

5. Theme songs, background music (146)

6. Animation (124)

7. Direction (100)

8. Jokes (94)

9. Images (91)

10. Moe (64)

11. Production company (63)

12. Battles, confrontations (57)

13. Setting (56)

14. Staff (55)

15. Motion (15)

16. Love between guys and girls (41)

17. Backgrounds (40)

18. Broadcast timing (39)

19. Coloring (34)

20. Reputation (33)

21. Girls love (30)

22. Robots (25)

23. Broadcast channel (25)

24. Sound effects (23)

25. High tension (22)

26. Tsundere (21)

27. Boys love (20)

28. Sales (19)

29. Mecha (18)

Well, the Top 7 I agree with, with the Top 2 being what's most important to me. And since I'm an Art and Animation major, 6 is important as well, which is one of the few reasons why I've still put up with Guilty Crown as of now. What's your thoughts about it?

I'm surprised animation is so low, I'd definitely place it higher than theme songs and voice actors.

But story and characters are always important - design, too.

Now on twitter! Because I like to pretend people care what I think.

And girls love is more important than any kind of robot/mechanical elements.

Story is very important. That's why Lucky Star was so popular there.

Moe is a little too high up on that list. But I guess generic ####ty awfulness is what most anime is about.

If it has a good balance of story and animation. Also if the plot device is well thought of and not to mention it has to end without any loose ends. That'd be a perfect anime ending.

I figured it'd be close to the top considering that's all that seems to be coming out these days...

how did moe beat mecha? thats just disturbing.

at least most people thought story and character were important. i'd have put voice actors a little lower though.

Yeah, you'd think animation would be higher, because why make it anime if you're not going to use animation?

With that said, there's a lot of things in anime that you can't accomplish in real life, even if you don't take animation into account, so I agree mostly with the list.

A story shouldn't just give people what they want, but also what they didn't know they wanted.

moe, voice actors, and theme songs are all way too high up on the list. I do have my favorite VAs, but they usually don't make or break a series for me.

the fact that moe is actually number 10 makes me kind of sad.
