Many otaku are already dead, or rather undead. Like take for example, Highschool of the Dead; one would imagine that Hirano was the mouthpiece for otaku because without his guns, he was just a creepy, mouthbreathing, perverted, massive #### loser with an inferiority complex, but you'd be wrong. That's because the zombies are the true allegory for the otaku, devouring anything it comes across with very little regards for human life.
This can especially be seen within the context that many of the zombie attacks shown are titilated by showing legs or breasts, often in gangrape scenarios that otaku love to see in their anime porn, hentai. Not only that but it seems that even the main characters who are well-endowed women have large amounts of fanservice during zombie attack scenes, meaning that zombies are lured in with the promise of titilation, a nod to the otaku's oversexed culture where figures and pillow covers are what counts as a sex partner. This comes full circle when zombie hunter Saeko declares that she is sexually aroused when around these zombies, something that otaku would love to hear uttered around them.
To play devil's advocate, the living also capture the otaku cynicism as there are many "net-right" ideals pushed through them with their eagerness to kill Korean actor Bae Yong-joon when the zombies made him turn, or Hirano which serves as an anti-gun control figure in the series. However, there seems to be more of 2chan's wank tissues in the HOTD library than biting social commentary, so it'd be easier to say the moral of the story is that it was made by zombies, and by zombies, I mean otaku.
