[as] Old School: Outlaw Star Edition

[ Edited ]
[as]Old School:
Outlaw Star

What is [as] Old School? Well, for those of you who have missed the first three threads, [as] Old School is all about enjoying some of the classic anime goodness that [as] has since lost the licenses to, or were responsible for leading the way for the current anime block on [as]. We have recently finished watching Wolf's Rain, and we also watched Witch Hunter Robin last year. Next up, as long as there are no objections, we are doing Outlaw Star.

Outlaw Star (星方武侠アウトロースター, Seihō Bukyō Autorō Sutā, translated as Starward Warrior Knight Outlaw Star) is a manga and anime series created by Takehiko Ito.

The series takes place in the distant future, 150 years after the development of spacecraft capable of traveling faster than the speed of light, and follows the adventures of the motley crew of the titular ship: the Outlaw Star.

The English language version of the anime series was produced by Bandai Entertainment and ZRO Limit Productions. An edited version of the television series aired on Cartoon Network's Toonami from January 15, 2001 to February 16, 2001, in the block that eventually paved the way for adultswim anime.

Outlaw Star is a contemporary of Trigun and Cowboy Bebop, sharing the genre of "Space Western". Although it's underlying themes aren't as deep as those of either of the aforementioned anime hits, it's still a really fun show that has gained a cult following. Chances are, you'll find something to enjoy in the series. :smileyhappy:

We will be watching two episodes a week and the discussion for the episodes that week will open on Thursday at midnight (so...Friday morning, technically). We will begin the first discussion on January 24th at midnight, barring any unforeseen consequences or complaints. In the past, I would put something in my sig about the current episodes we are on and the day of the discussions, but I eventually gave up on that, since most people come in here to ask about such things anyway. :smileyvery-happy:

Normally, I would put something here about where you could pick up the series if you wanted to participate but lacked the episodes. However, I'm afraid I lack links to good sources for that sort of thing, so maybe some of the fans who are planning to participate can point newcomers in the right direction. :smileyhappy: Also, for those lacking episodes and money, please make sure to PM me for help. ^_^

I think that's everything...if I've left anything out, you'll make sure to tell me, right? Anyway, I look foreword the third round of [as] Old School, Outlaw Star edition! ^_^

Oh MOM. This is great. Outlaw Star is one of my favorite animes. And it's also the first complete series that I bought. I got it on sale for like $30 at Best Buy and it was worth every penny.  I really missed seeing it on TV. I don't think it ever got the respect it deserved.  And an interesting tidbit of info. The VA for Gene Starwind also ended up doing the VA for Pazou on Ghost in the Shell.  I can't wait to discuss this great show with the people who can truly appreciate it.

Yeah, I knew about the Gene-Pazu connection. I think he also played Hubb on Wolf's Rain. He's a great VA. :smileyhappy:

And it's good to have you aboard! Now I just have to track down the other people who wanted to participate. :smileyvery-happy:

Careful with the hinting there, seemingly ambiguous quote or not....

@Mid-Boss: Hell no. The good thing about this thread is we can watch the stuff that they cut in the way it was meant to be watched. :smileywink:

I unfortunately know the feeling....

If you aren't feeling up to it, don't worry about it. ^_^ Or, you know, just watch when you can. Discussion in these threads tends to be pretty loose, people coming and going and watching different episodes at different times. This can make spoiler-dodging difficult, but so far people have done alright. :smileyhappy:

Indeed Robert Buchholz is a great VA. One of my favorites. :smileyhappy: And yeah he played Hubb.

Well I'm all aboard for watching Outlaw Star since I haven't seen it. I just need to find a way to get the DVDs. Probably Netflix.

So when will we start watching?

Heh, that was the main picture on my Fan Collective page, before FC went the way of the dinosaurs....

Also, I shouldn't need to warn you about being careful with the pictures you post, too, right? :smileywink:

Hopefully I'll have Gankustsuou done by then so I can get the DVDs from Netflix. Since I can only get 1 anime DVD at a time >_<
