Awesome! I can't believe I caught this just in time. I wanted to join the WR one last time, but you guys were a good ways into the series by the time I joined and with classes that semester I just couldn't keep up. I've got lots more free time this time around, lucky me. And I haven't seen OS, so new is always exciting. I'm gonna go watch those eps now and I'll see you guys tonight! :robotvery-happy:

Ok its 12:03am PST and here is my Post on the first two shows. I thought it was alittle tough to watch at first cause well I had this thing about it being like CBB(cowboy bebop) I really didnt like CBB so I was a little aprehensive to watch it but That isnt the case cause this show has a twist Vodoo magic.LOL now here is the thing I didnt get the bad guys have magic then gene Im sorry if I have the name wrong but he has a bad a$$ gun the shoots some wicked stuff but it also has shells that counter magic. the other thing if has has the boat load of cash why does he worry about ammo. Well Onto other things. Im guessing his dad was killed by space pirates am i correct in saying that. Or do we find that out later in the show. I havent seen this show so be nice please. So far Im liking the show and that is all that matters Im sure I will have questions as we go.

Alright, A lot of what you have said will be explained later in the show. I don't want to spoil anything for you. I can tell you that Gene really doesn't have all that much money. He only makes pocket money really. Especially when compared to the price of the shells for his "special" gun. The whole thing with his dad will get explained later, but it will take some time to get to it. So just sit tight.

After watching the first 2 episodes, I definitely agree with what has been said about the animation. The backgrounds are very nicely detailed. So, visually it definitely should be enjoyable to watch again.

Also, in regards to Gene's gun, we don't know much other than the fact that it can apparently combat whatever sort of magical powers those pirates are using. Also, when Gene first pulled it out and used it against them, Hilda said something like, "a caster".

My first impression is that Gene is certainly not naive. Hilda has tried to get the better of him or hide details from him, but he saw right through it. Although, given what she has shown of her character so far, there could very easily be more that she is hiding. But, at the same time, it's not like she has known Gene that long and she is being chased by pirates. So from that perspective, it makes a sense for her to air a bit on the cautious side.

And the previews are really flashy, but I can hardly follow what is going on in them.

From the first two episodes, it seems like this will be a whole lot of fun. I'm digging the interaction between Gene and Jim (especially that "becoming a man" bit :smileyvery-happy:), and this Hilda seems more than capable of taking care of herself in a bind. I get the sense that this Melfina's true nature is going to be a big question for a long time; she definitely seems a bit out of the ordinary. I can already see a few of the reasons for the comparisons to Bebop, but at the same time, this series feels like its own entity. I'm enjoying hearing Robert Buchholz and Mary McGlynn in two of the lead roles. The artwork is rather nice, and the opening song is all kinds of uber-catchy. (My source for these episodes doesn't seem to have included the ending theme or next episode previews, unfortunately, though I'm sure I could track them down if necessary.) All in all, I'm looking forward to seeing where this thing goes.

You and I must have the same source. I've got the OP and the rest of the episode, but no previews or the ED. Which is semi-unfortunate, since I hear the ED is pretty good. I'm thinking about digging for another source just to see.... Oh, and I'm on the wrong computer for it, but I have the full version of the OP that I should link sometime. And yeah, there's nothing more embarrassing than exclaiming "THROUGH THE NIGHT!!!!" at the top of your lungs in time with the OP when your whole family is right in the next room. XD The OP really goes a long way toward setting the mood for the show, and I think that's what the best anime OPs should aim for. :smileyhappy:

The way I think about Outlaw Star, when compared with it's contemporaries in the "space western" genre (namely Bebop and Trigun), is that Outlaw Star is their fun-loving brother. Bebop is the stylish brother dressed in contemporary noir and with a melancholic expression on his face, while Trigun is the happy-go lucky guy who can get serious in a heartbeat, when the situation warrants. Outlaw Star, on the other hand, is the guy who totally crashes every party in town on the same night. :smileyvery-happy: You're not gonna get any kind of significant message from OS, beyond the standard "Live your dreams!" fare, but you're gonna have a ** blarg ** good time regardless. :smileyhappy: So far, that's what I'm getting out of it, anyway....

Oh, and next to her job as the Major, I think Hilda may be my favorite McGlynn role. Very few female VAs can bring such a great combination of sexiness and badassery. :smileywink:

Finally, welcome to the discussion, Currency and Leandrah! I'm glad you both made it just in time! ^_^

So I was gonna go off my memory for this discussion, but then I decided on a whim to throw in the ol' DVDs last night and I am so glad I did.  I haven't watched this in about 4 years or so, and it was fun to revisit it all.  Even though I've become a total subbie these days I still like to watch the English version of this because, well, that's how I first watched it.

A few random comments, some in reply to others.

- Gene & Jim get by but they definitely don't have a lot of money.  You can get an idea of the currency values (I think it's "won"? I never did get that clear, it sounds kind of like a Korean derivation, actually), though, through snippets of conversation.  150 or whatever it was for a tractor repair job didn't seem to be worth Gene's time, but what was it, 800 a day for bodyguard duties was decent pay.  A 4000 bounty on Death Rob seems like a decent chunk of change.  All in all I think you could generally compare the won to the dollar and it would be pretty similar.  Jim also says at one point that the caster shells are expensive, so I guess it would kind of ** blarg ** that that one was a dud...

- I concur with TG's assessment of this series being its own entity.  There are some superficial similarities to Bebop but beyond that they are pretty different.  I watched this, of course, before I ever played Metroid Prime, but now it seems to be running all together in my head what with the "space pirates."  :smileyvery-happy:   Anyway, Furion, your brothers analogy is great...

- I don't know what version everyone is watching, but I remember some of the Toonami edits being pretty lame - Gene & Jim's poker game, for example, was recharacterized as Go Fish.

- The art does represent a certain time period, doesn't it?  You can defnitely tell this series is "vintage" but it still looks great.

Thanks. ^_^ Since I've been on a One Piece kick lately, whenever I heard "pirates", that's where my thoughts drifted. Actually, the pirates in OS seem to be pretty close to those in One Piece: according to what the short guy said, pirates tend to operate within specific groupings (like the Tao magic using ones that attacked Gene and co), and something Jim said gave me the impression that the pirates also operate pretty freely so long as they grease some palms. If Gene ends up taking on a group of pirates, getting knocked out early in the fight, and then waking up just in time to fight the pirate's "captain", then the comparision will be pretty much complete. :smileyvery-happy:

Also, as far as Toonami edits go, I know they completely removed a lot of the suggestive and explicit stuff. I think they completely edited out the scene between Gene and the one lady of the night, as well as did an airbrush of Gene's one poster. I wonder how they handled some of the banter between Gene and Jim....

It hasn't been that long since I watched the series, maybe a month or two, so it's still kinda fresh. Gene is one hilarious character, and Jim isn't half bad himself. Outlaw Star is one of the funniest dubs I've heard, hands down. As goofy as Gene acts it's pretty obvious from the first two episodes that he knows how to handle himself, much like another space-type character we know and love. I like that fact that Gene is a 'space cherry' too, kind of interesting. It kind of makes sense that people would react differently to space travel than travel on a planet's surface, it's just seldom touched on. Nice addition.

Anyway, here is a link to the Outlaw Star screens I took. I never did get the second episode finished, though...

I think one of the best things about this series is the interaction between Gene and Jim. "Never grew up" and "boy genius" just seems to set up for a lot of fun situations.

Not much else to say so far, it seems. Though I do disagree about the thought that "Live your dreams" is about all you'll get out of this. But maybe that's just my future-sight...
They say there's no such place... as Paradise. Even if you search to the ends of the Earth, there's nothing there. No matter how far you walk, it's always the same road. It just goes on and on. But, in spite of that... Why am I so driven to find it?

I am sooo excited that I caught this in time! Two eps. and I'm already in love!

@Furion: Thanks, and I really like your brother analogy too

I was thinking about CB last night when I watched it. And just like everyone has said so far there are some similarities for the obvious reasons. Although at the same time, even though it's very different I get the same "happy" feelings from this show as I did CB when I first watched it. Perhaps it's because of it's "vintage" qualities, as Jurisd said... but it just makes me feel all nostalgic and good.

I enjoyed some things that seemed like they should be silly or dumb but weren't. One example I can think of right of the top of my head Jim seems like he should be the annoying side kick. But so far I don't really find him annoying at all. Some of the humor, like a couple of the comedic relief moments... such as when in the first episode, I think Gene says Lets Roll... then the car breaks down. I was more amused by that than I feel like I should have been. Hmmm, I'm having trouble explaining it... for example if they did something like that at some point in bleach, it would have felt corny. But here at didn't, maybe because they don't really have an overload of it, it's just sprinkled here and there so far. So instead of corny it's amusing.

So Hilda and Gene kick booteh, I can't wait to find out more about Melfina. I just assumed that we'd find out more about Gene's dad later. And I suppose that's where I am right now. Really interested, and just enjoying it as it comes.

I always enjoy these first episodes.  The action never really stops but you still manage to get a feeling for who the main characters are and what they are about (at least Gene, Jim and Hilda).  The animation really has held up well but I think good hand animated shows tend to age better than computer stuff.  I agree that the OP is a good match with the show but I don't find the ED as good.  Also, I hope everyone gets a chance to see the prologues that begin each episode from now on.

OP really does set the mood for the show...kickass from the first second:smileyhappy: I myself am not too much of a fan of either of the ED's but they do have some great great concept art, i would suggest finding them somewhere

Out of the three shows you mentioned OS is just more superior in my opinion, because it blends just about all three styles together and forms on helluva amazing story

Now then regarding the first few episodes; first of all...my photobucket is a ** blarg ** and only loaded like half of my caps...i'm gonna work on that and try to get them posted later. Regarding the artwork, it really is stunning and detalied considering its time period. I'd also say that the fist few episodes already do a really good job at setting up most of the characters. Gene being the totally over the top crazy guy, and then Jim being his right hand man providing the voice of reason. Melfina and Hilda are both quite enigmatic at this point, so i'm interested in seeing just how they end  developing and the roles they play...

Oh! Opinion question~~ I started watching Outlaw Star in english and stuff. Should I switch to subs before it's too late, or are the voices totally good? Cause like, I really like the dub right now and I hear a lot of good things about this one VA but I don't want to miss out on anything and stuff..if there is anything to miss out on. v.<;; blah

Yeah, I thought that scene was great, too. :smileyvery-happy: I think, if it was Bleach, the characters would have had some kind of spastic fit and yelled at each other. But I think the funniest part was that Gene and Jim just sat there for awhile after it broke down, in total disbelief. :smileyvery-happy: I think that might be part of the reason why it came off as more comedic than corny: Who hasn't just sat in a state of utter disbelief after you've been all fired up and ready to go...only to have it all fall apart?

On the other hand, maybe spazzing out about it would be a more realistic reaction. :smileyvery-happy:

@simmer: Yeah, I do at least have the prologues. And I think I may have found a better source through which I can acquire OS episodes, too. ^_^

@NoProof: That's good news! Better late than never, right? :smileywink:

@Dream: Take your time with the caps, of course. :smileyhappy:

@Tellie: I think that the scenes in the ED are actually concept art that eventually led to Outlaw Star, so I don't think we actually get to see any of them, no.

Um, I've heard a lot of good things about the dub, so if you like it so far, you should probably stick with it. ^_^

Just out of curiosity, has anyone heard the Japanese version of Outlaw Star?

“Oh, it’s you…. It’s been a long time. How have you been? I’ve been really busy being dead. You know…after you murdered me? Okay look, we both said a lot of things that you are going to regret. But I think we should put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.”
