How much further "away" can he go than dead?

This rant should be directed at English Lit teachers who force their students to read Great Expectations because they were forced to read it when they were in school. Stop the cycle of violence! And just move on to something else. Like Tolstoy. He's like Dickens without all the happy times.

I disagree. Charles Dickens was one of the worst authors ever, second only to James Fenimore Cooper.

Opening a depressing, and ultimately self-serving novel with some recursive bull#### does not make you a great author.

It marks you as a narcissistic ####, just like Cesspool McFartbrain, whose #### asmb loves to lick.

I think a lot of high-schoolers are too dumb for Tolstoy. It'll be like flicking a light switch to those few who do get it, though.

What do you expect?
Dickens was English and therefore partially depressed by default and what's worse is that he live in 19th century London.
A dark and gloomy place.

There's a reason Dickens is taught - he's one of the best writers in the history of the written word at characterization. You can't overemphasize that about him, even thought his plots tended to be the same melodramatic drivel that plagued the other popular writers of his generation.

He's infinitely better when you get to read his books, opposed to the standard of 'having' to read his books. Easy enough to say, what's going to make you want to read Great Expectations or David Copperfield or A Christmas Carol that doesn't involve muppets just arbitrarily....

Same's true of Richard Matheson, Hemmingway, Mark Twain, and numerous others. SAC Doyle turned out to actually be one of my favorite authors after not having to read him but wanting.

You really should be a SwimKnight. Go to Sealab to find out how...

Reading the Scarlet Letter for school made me want to die, reanimate and kill myself again..thanks N.Hawthorne..kill him too

Once upon a time in a land far away, a beautiful, independent, self-assured princess happened upon a frog as she sat contemplating ecological issues on the shores of an unpolluted pond in a verdant meadow near her castle.

The frog hopped into the princess' lap and said: Elegant Lady, I was once a handsome prince, until an evil witch cast a spell upon me. One kiss from you, however, and I will turn back into the dapper young prince that I am, and then, my sweet, we can marry and set up housekeeping in your castle with my mother, where you can prepare my meals, clean my clothes, bear my children, and feel forever grateful doing so.

That night, as the princess dined sumptuously on a repast of lightly sautéed frogs legs seasoned in a wine and onion cream sauce she chuckled to herself and thought: I don't f*cking think so..

Don't be sad. Bitching about required reading in high school is a rite of passage.

The truth is most people would never read any of those books at that age if they didn't have to. It just takes a few years of life experiences away from high school and college to being to appreciate one's literary foundations and develop a true love of reading.

At least that's how it happened for me.
