The idea that Barack Obama is anti-Israel simply because he hasn't bombed Iran yet is so absurd that it doesn't even merit mentioning, but, since it's been shoved down the nation's throat by the likes of Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum, our country really needs to understand what a colossally horrible idea it would be. Yes, by all means, let's go get into another war and let's be sure that we charge it onto the national credit card, which is already trillions and trillions and trillions of dollars in debt thanks to our other needless wars. That way, we can feel all patriotic about sending our kids off to die and sticking their little brothers and sisters with the bill while we blow up brown people and take their oil. Yes, that's the American dream, folks. So sayeth the GOP. The violent, incendiary rhetoric being spewed out right now is nothing short of terrifying, and I'm truly thankful that none of the Republican candidates have any shot at stepping foot into the White House. The LAST thing our country needs is yet another war, this time with nuclear weapons involved. What is it going to take before America finally learns from its mistakes? Total collapse, it would seem.

More to the point of the thread---I hope Obama, and all presidents to come, will treat Israel no differently than any other country.

I am tired of the U.S. taking the role of the protectors of Israel.Israel is itself supposedly a free and independent state.

If they start an actual shooting war, let them finish it without our help.

The U.S. should NOT be the military arm of Israel, drafted to fight their percieved enemies, no questions asked.

If Israel should ACTUALLY be attacked, let's go kick some Iranian azz.

If Israel STARTS armed conflict, we should stay out of it.

You notice I said we should help Israel if they are attacked.....Not that we should aid any country attacked by Israel.

I suppose I will be labeled anti-Semitic for the above statements, but I never side with the aggressors and we've lost too many soldiers fighting in Iraq on Israel's behalf.

The reason that World War I got out of hand so fast and beyond any one country's control is because just about every nation-state in the European continent was pledged to "come to the aid" of other countries with military response, with all available speed and power. So, when a Serbian National killed Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Austria when after Serbia, part of the Balkans. Instead of trying to force both sides to stand down, both sides called in their military partners, and the whole thing devolved into a bloody stalemate for 3 1/2 years. That's why so many countries will spend weeks or months on negotiations doing nothing; because the alternative is a shooting war that could pull in their neighboring states and strike up a new World War.

OT: We as a country have helped defend Israel because it is good political policy, both domestically and foreign. For a long time, Israel was the only real democracy in both name AND practice in that part of the world.

Also, a stable Middle East is also good for oil production, as sad as that is to admit. Neither us, Russia, or China really wants a shooting war to start there, because our collective economies are dependent on steady oil production.
