If I had to hazard a guess, I would say that Saul probably was intended to be a 30 minute show, but when it was cut down to 15 they had to lose some of the nuance. In many ways, the show as aired hasn't come close to the footage in the "unaired pilot" on the show page.

I had read somewhere proably at the beginning of last summer that Saul was going to be 45 minute episodes, or maybe it was the pilot was a 45 minute episode. Either way, I do agree that the show would be better served in the 22-minute format, at least.

yeah I was kinda hoping so too, because I so love like - everything about it.  I love the ideas in it, what it's based on (the Krofft stuff and all those other shows Lewis referenced as inspiration), I love the cast.  I love Tom Stern.  I like Lewis' work a lot.  I think at the back of my mind I'm trying to blame Gerardi for all this just because he's the only person involved that I haven't been completely jazzed over his work in the past.

But I hope they get their shiz together, I'd be really mad if this show went down the tubes just because they didn't have their shiz together, therefor making it extremely unlikely that I would see another show like this in the forseeable future.

So I am kind of pulling for it in that respect.

Well, it has a 20-episode order, right? A lot can happen in 20 episodes. They could -- as you say -- get their shiz together. They might even find more things for everybody you think is being wasted to do.

yeah I'm hoping the next one will be better.  I think two was a slight improvement over the pilot, verrrry slight.  But still - better.  Maybe it'll continue to progess in that way.

Frisky Dingo didn't click for me until episode four or five. Saul actually managed to set its plot in motion earlier, but that's at the expense of some character development.
