I was personally thinking maybe possibly 3 episodes a week, though it would be kinda tough making that kind of room.

Not happening on Saturday nights. Anime only Saturdays couldn't hold itself together so the comedies are there to help. I was meaning in terms of replacing reruns of anime as many of these shows have been played over and over and over and over and over that it gets boring and the show needs to take a break.

Yeah well as neat as ASA going all of Saturday starting with hour blocks of Naruto, One Piece and Bleach would be, they don't have the kind of money to be airing 3 long shounen and maintain their episodes.

That and there is no anime on US television that can beat Family Guy in the same slot and with The Boondocks almost always beating Bleach and the other anime it's not  going to leave the 11 hour for anything short of American Dad coming back to Saturday in that slot.

What really makes Saturday work is the combination of dedicated anime viewers and majority audience who come for Family Guy and The Boondocks and might stick around for anime if it interests them.

That's why Jeebus shouldn't be pushing for all comedy Saturday because if they just aired the same shows they do every other night then the ratings would be worse than what anime gets 12AM-6AM.

I think 3 episodes a night every week is a little much for viewers who may not like a show. They'd be pretty put off by 3 episodes of a show they aren't interested in pushing asside single airings of other shows they like. That's both true for casual and hardcore viewers. I think 2 episodes is a good pace but 3 or more should only be used for special occasions.

Remember in this case One Piece is still an untested gamble with the Adult Swim audience. 2 would help the pace of the first season but 3 would be bothersome to viewers who don't quickly become fans. As much as I feel anybody could enjoy One Piece, that's not entirely the case. It has a broad appeal but even the most broadly appealing anime don't entertain every kind of viewer. Actually viewers who prefer the more story driven talky shows would probably dislike One Piece because to them it would feel too immature. So it's better not to shove it down people's throats at the rate of 3 episodes a night. They'd be hard pressed to encore that many episodes later in the night and keep the reruns of other fan favorites as well.

So there's lots of reasons 3 episodes is too much for any show especially one that hasn't aired on Adult Swim before.

HELPeR for the TOONAMI, Mobile Suit Gundam, Dragon Ball Z, Harvey Birdman and Perfect Hair Forever boards. Feel free to ask me anything on those topics.

Well in that case that would mean unless there isn't an encore you'd be dedicating HALF of the anime block to One Piece. That's excessive. And I wouldn't suggest not doing an encore, especially right off the bat. Or maybe they could try that and see if "one time only" makes people tune in more but IMO 3 is still excessive for any show no matter how good it is. Because there is no show that appeals to everyone. I can watch 7 hours or more of One Piece in a single day but that doesn't mean a casual observer would sit through even 3.

That'd be pretty unfair to the people who like those shows regardless of how many times they run. But right now there's only 6 shows on the night that have been around a long time and one of them is still in premieres. FLCL and The Big O can certainly take a break, I think GitS might be due for one as well and even Bebop could be off for a stint but at the moment they have DRR about to finish up along with reruns of Kekkaishi and FMA:B going. You'd be pushing them pretty late into the night as well as taking most if not all the old shows off in order to do 3 episodes of One Piece especially if there was an encore. Which IMO would be more acceptable if you at least had 3 shows in premieres and not just 2 so 1 Bleach, 1 new show and 2 One Piece is a lot more acceptable. And as much as it would be excessive on the shounen... Final Act really should be the other show airing. That iron's just going to keep cooling down if they don't strike by mid 2012.

Variety is the spice of life. I'd rather not see the wider variety of Saturday's line-up fall victim to one show getting extra air time. That's what Naruto did to Toonami.

Cartoon Network, you want new anime? Simple

Reply to TheBigOFan72 - Message ID#: 61796994

Really, I'm not a frequent poster, but this is not rocket science. I'm sure plenty of Anime nerds would rage over this because it's not the latest hipster nerdcore anime, I like those too, but for purely a ratings/ business standpoint, they should consider a long term investment in One Piece

Yes, this show has been tried many times to be successful in the American market, and so far has failed twice. In this case 3rd time is the charm! There is a lot of eBuzz on the series, and it is growing more and more popular in the anime community despite not having an airing TV show. There is a lot of hype as to why this has become one of the fastest and best selling comic in Japan, why the show has a regular 10-12million audience over there each, and, best of all, Why is it worth watching and different from the Fox Kids version. It should be noted that the Show failed Twice, but for the same reason each time, 4KiDS. Many people familiar with the show were only familiar with that version despite that CN showed an entire season with the funimation version. I've seen this so many times first hand, it didn't get the ratings it deserved because everyone thought it was business as usual despite the advertisement. In 2011 people know otherwise, they are more curious. The comic has become about as equal in popularity to the Naruto comic in fledgling and anime communities, Naruto, which still is America's most popular Manga! Bringing this attention back to the masses as a new show, as uncut, as something they haven't seen before can explode big.

Adult Swim has no Anime cash cows left. Inuyasha has ended. FullMetal Alchemist is completely over. Bleach is going to continue to go on the down-end of ratings from here on out, I wouldn't be surprised if the anime or comic gets cancelled in the not so distant future, so you should be preparing yourself for that if you haven't. I'm NOT saying drop the show for One Piece, nor am I saying cancel it altogether; but put the shows back to back! Maybe One Piece at 11:30 or 12:30 and wane fans from Bleach into enjoying both, such that it's an easy transfer when it ends.  No other long running series has the potential to bring in as much capital as one piece just because of how short they are. 56 episodes will come and go in a year, 2-3 years on a stretched with breaks schedule.

If you air the funimation version from the beginning, from where cartoon network left off, or where ever funimation wants you to start, you will be in a good position to build up momentum. There are enough episodes done to marathon the show and more if you start from the beginning, and the show seems like it can continue on for another decade. If a long running show is what you want, something to draw Inuyasha and Bleach fans, this is your show. If you want to have a show Teenagers can watch and kids that shouldn't be watching watch without having anything overly controversial this is the show! If you want something that probably will never rate higher than a coveted TV-14 rating, this is your show!

Comedy, Action, Drama, Long Running, International Success, potentially a bargain bin license fee. No Matter what other programs you might air in the short run, Gurren Lagann, Blood-C, Blue Exorcist, Deadman Wonderland, (All great shows and choices) etc. I'd run to chase down One Piece, put it on TV, and wait for the money to roll in as it's fanbase will probably explode after each season. I say this as a tip with love to [as], but really to say "no" to this now, when things are starting to turn around, would be a missed opportunity of carrier ending proportions. Buy it while people still believe it is an American Failure, you won't regret it.

Naruto being America's most popular manga? Sales aren't really showing that it's the most popular by a landslide. Vampire Knight actually at times beats Naruto in the New York Times manga best-seller lists, and it's starting to give the big 3 a run for their money here since unfortunately Vampire Knight's popularity grew so much thanks to Twilight. Also Sailor Moon is getting up there. It sold out 50,000 copies in 4 weeks, and it was on the top of the New York Times manga best-seller list each week, and is the best-selling manga on Amazon.

Also One Piece didn't fail the second time. It merely failed to meet Cartoon Network's ridiculous expectations for it to perform as well as like Naruto and Dragon Ball Z which is a pretty ridiculous thing. It was doing well, just not well enough to please the guys in the suits.

But anyway, this is something they really need to consider. Fewer options of shows that would work, or could work, and One Piece is always going to be one of those options thanks to it's length and other various factors.

But it doesn't always work. Case Closed got more than 3 chances, and it failed every time. Now the series has been stalled at 130 episodes. Someone else will have to try finishing it, but considering everything FUNimation tried, I doubt other licensors have the confidence in it selling well for them.

Arguably, One Piece has already had 3 chances to meet expectations.

The first was a total wash on Saturday mornings.

The second was successful for a while despite still being the 4Kids dub and it improved with the FUNimation edited dub but it was too little, too late and more importantly didn't meet some heavy expectations from Cartoon Network. But I guarentee you if they had made a deal with Toei and FUNimation for some merchandising rights, Cartoon Network would still be airing One Piece today.

The third is actually the DVD release thus far. Sales were pretty good at first I hear but they didn't keep up. Hopefully the rerelease improves sales but it looks to me like the reason why FUNimation hasn't been able to get more yet is because Toei isn't satisfied with the sales. They are however satisfied with the simulcast views so that's going to continue. I might be wrong about that last one being a failure to meet expectations but I've got to believe if One Piece was getting even close to the sales of Dragon Ball Z that Toei and FUNimation would have already worked out future deals for One Piece's US expansion. Instead what are we getting more of? More and more Dragon Ball Z. It's their number one seller so that's not surprising but it's still a bit irritating to me that DBZ can have so many rereleases and One Piece is struggling to continue only it's second attempt on the home video market.

How many releases have there been for Dragon Ball Z now?:smileyindifferent:There's the VHS's, the uncut singles that never finished, the 87 singles, the orange bricks, the Dragon Box, the BD, Dragon Ball Z Kai on DVD and BD in both parts and seasons.

Sigh, if only One Piece sold better, and could have success like that here. Though I wouldn't want to see it milked.

Actually, from what I'm hearing, sales are pretty good. I think the big scare from around the time of Anime Boston actually did some good drumming up sales for the Collections.

You know what I meant. A third chance for a TV airing.

I wasn't saying they were bad, I was saying I wish it sold much better than it already does.

Ladies and gentlemen our ship has come in

ent-to-release-more-one-piece-episo...

206-263 licensed at last

So I guess they didn't get "the rest" yet but it's a start

And hey finally Blu-Ray releases but it makes sense that they didn't do that up unitl now because season 4 is when it goes HD

According to that podcast mentioned in the report, they're expecting a Summer 2012 release. That's a little hard to hear after all this wait but it's better than hearing Fall of 2012.

HELPeR for the TOONAMI, Mobile Suit Gundam, Dragon Ball Z, Harvey Birdman and Perfect Hair Forever boards. Feel free to ask me anything on those topics.

And I'm not caught up yet still, dammit. I'm not at episode 60 yet.:smileysad:Catching up to that will take me a while once they start streaming those episodes after they come out on BD/DVD.

*Note, I watched One Piece originally on and off on Toonami until mid-Alabasta and stopped, then resumed with the FUNimation simulcasts and have seen every episode after 390 except 492 which FUNi didn't stream.

Don't get mad... but... that's slightly disappointing.

Why couldn't they license more?

What about 264+? What about the movies?

That's just nonsense and disappointing, but, that's just me obviously.

Money, they need more money. You can't get more episodes if you don't have the money. Just how much do you think it costs to license an episode of One Piece? I've heard licensing costs are around $20,000 per episode for the rights.

It may be kinda disappointing they got only 206-263, and no movies (All they have is movie 8 which they've had for years.), but it's a good start.

58 episodes is a "season" I guess they can only afford to buy it in "seasons" and can't get the rest at the moment.

But chances are by the time they're releasing these they'll have licensed more. I don't think they'll have another long gag between season releases as long as season 4 sells and it dang well better because the major story events in those episodes are freak'n awesome.

But you could stand to seem happier about it considering how up in arms you were about FUNimation not having more yet. So you now know more is on the way. That's something to be very happy about because honestly while I didn't think it was going to end there it was such a long wait I was starting to worry we'd ever get more dubbed episodes of One Piece without a TV broadcast on a kids network for Toei to be satisifed with.

Well this is good news. One Piece outperfomed Dragon Ball in sales overseas. Guess this sorta explains how the license deal finally got set in place.

Re: One Piece

Reply to TheBigOFan72 - Message ID#: 62233156

Eh... not really.

One Piece has been outperforming Dragon Ball in Japan for a while.

Dragon Ball Z Kai was ended before the Buu Saga because Dragon Ball merchandise wasn't selling well enough. That seems kind of unbelievable but I guess they just milked it dry over there.

As for why DBZ does so well here still, particularly the FUNimation dub rereleases... maybe it's the homosexual undertones in the dialogue. Maybe that's what Bleach, Naruto and One Piece's dubs were missing that kept them from being the hit DBZ is here. And to think the opportunies were nearly endless for those shows but I guess they don't have as much burly men glistening with sweat grabbing eachother... but there's some straight up closet cases and out of the closet cases in those shows so it would be easy to include more undertones.

All of that was a joke ^ but it does make you wonder.

One Piece's problem is it's hugely successful in Japan and the rest of the world.... not so much. It has patches of popularity around the world but nothing like it's popularity in Japan. In Japan it's top rated, top selling and has a whole store dedicated to selling just it's merchandise. The only thing from Japan that had that in the US is Pokemon but now that just The Nintendo Store so even that didn't last.

Really there was only two ways One Piece was ever going to get on Dragon Ball and Pokemon tier or even Yu-Gi-Oh and Naruto teir and that was either for it not to flop for 4Kids (which might have happened if they didn't make the dub so very unappealing... even to kids) or if basically the original plan for FUNimation to get One Piece went through which means 4Kids never got it and it probably would have started on Toonami potentially even before Dragon Ball GT finished airing. If it had the chance to air daily back in the early 2000s when DBZ was at it's pique then it probably could have been huge here but still probably behind Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon since they were the big shows that brought the wave in the early 2000s. One Piece just barely missed it... and to think if it hadn't then we might be just a year or so behind Japan on television broadcast today. But who is to say how history would have changed? I just think it would have done a lot better and been a more successful series here if it had come a bit earlier and was handled better from the start.

But honestly given how inaccurate the first dub of DBZ actually was I think if the 4Kids dub had aired on Toonami before it had moved to Saturday only, it likely would have done a lot better overall. Because when you look at DBZ, Sailor Moon and Voltron you know that "accurate dubs" don't neccessarily get better ratings because a lot of viewers don't mind or even know of the inaccuracies. If they enjoy it as it's presented, that's all that matters to them.
