I was Paul (the screaming monster) in the one w/ Markula's 4040th birthday. That blew out my voice for about 4 days. Also a skeleton operative that got shot up by Carl in the last episode of the season.

Now we're getting into the hard-hitting shit; I'm not gonna cry though. I work at a studio where Dave Willis and Matt Maiellaro would come to record voices for Aqua Teen, we did most of the recording for the movie. I'd see Dave around and I told him I was interested in working on a show if there was ever a chance of that. After they did the pilot they let me give a crack at it; I'd never mixed in 5.1 before so it was cool of them to give me that break.

I've always watched cartoons, I was a big Simpsons fanatic. In college I had an extensive VHS collection (20 something tapes?) from recording episodes in syndication. No timers though! I would edit out the commercials LIVE by pausing the VCR. I'd leave parties with girls at them to gome home and tape the Simpsons.

I have a four year old son so I'm actually just getting hip to the more "modern" cartoons. I'd never watched Spongebob before and it's pretty incredible, really funny and sounds amazing.

Do you basically have free reign when it comes to the music on Squidbillies or do Matt and Dave tell you sort of what they're aiming for and you just have to create music to fit it?

Also, what are your favorite bands?

Well, I do a lot of the rip-off music (that's vulgar, let's call it "loving tribute") so usually they'll know what tune they want a parody of. "This is a Top Gun thing, so we're doing a 'Highway To The Dangerzone' gag" or whatever. That stuff is like Price Is Right; go as close to the original without going over (lawsuit). I also do more traditional scoring, so I'll get the show and see that this sappy moment could be made sappier with some strings or what have you. Dave and Jim Fortier are really great about giving me creative freedom, the worst that could happen is I spend a bunch of time on something and they don't like it. No babies die or anything.

I like: Steely Dan, Jay Dee, Cynic, Oscar Peterson, Hank I, classic metal, GAP Band, Jellyfish, all Mike Patton projects

Hi just read your comment about the simpsons. yes the simpsons are great. also so were vcrs, with the pause and fast forward....even recording shows! we used to record movies sometimes off the tv...once i was supposed to be recording mary poppins, (i think? or maybe babes in toyland because a funny part happened. i tried to rewind it but i just ruined it since it was recordding.)

It's a gas, but I'm used to being "on the other side of the glass" and it really is a different headspace. For those of you unfamiliar with the technical aspect of recording voice: when you're in the booth you only hear yourself, unless somebody in the control room pushes a button when they deign to speak to you. So between takes you're there just listening to your own breathing and praying not to fart while you look at everybody in the control room jawing it up and enjoying human company. So it's a little weird for comedy when you're trying to give your all and sell the laffs from this relative vacuum. However Jim and Dave are really supportive, and I've recorded enough people to know that you just have to go for it and hope it all sorts out in editing.

Yeah mang, there are several good tunes this season... including one collab with my old bandmate from Tongo Hiti, Big Mike Geier (he wrote Princess Cruiser from 12 oz. Mouse and has done some stuff with Adventure Time)

I'm particularly intrigued by the technical aspect of writing for games.. You often have to write a sort of evolving theme: something sort of static and mellow for just walking around, an expectant "this is about to get exciting" feel and then a full blown fighting the dragon thing. The game engine then jumps between them on the whim of the player and it has to make sense musically. I've never done that before but it'd be a neat puzzle to solve.

I went to University of Miami, they have a great recording program that mixes the technical diode n' capacitor type shit with music study. I've played bass since I was a kid, just always into rock and roll. I went to work at a studio and mixed TV and radio advertisments for a bunch of years before I got on the Squids train.

anyways, my question for you is this: What do you consider classic metal? I noticed you mentioned that earlier, just wondering what that means to you, exactly, hopefully not too much hair metal


NO, my real question is this: What percentage of your time working on squidbillies is spent laughing your ass off? Because I have often thought that squidbillies has probably the best voice acting in all of television, so it must be difficult sorting through all the recordings right? Anything super-funny ever happen during a recording session?
