I'd say the Boondocks is like Avatar on Nickelodeon. American made and produced, but heavy Japanese influence in many aspects. Not technically an anime, but about as close as anything made Stateside is.

This newest season has taken an evern further step towards anime style than ever before.

If you look at Ed Wunsler and Ed the 3rd, their faces specifically look very different from the first 2 seasons.

A lot more anime stylized.

Not to mention Th Red Ball episode was pretty much a dodgeball shonen. :smileyvery-happy:

This legendary dragon is a powerful engine of destruction.
Virtually invincible, very few have faced this awesome creature and lived to tell the tale.

Aaron Mcgruder is influenced by anime (like Samurai Champloo, watch the Red Ball episode, ).

Anime is Japanese for animation, no? So The Boondocks can be called an anime. But I think now we associate anime with animation coming only from Japan. In this definition, the Boondocks is not an anime.

The answer to life, the universe, and everything is zweiundvierzig.

The animation is made by Madhouse Studios, though. And Madhouse made a lot of anime including BECK, Chobits, Gunslinger Girl, Paranoia Agent, and Ninja Scroll.

technically, yes it is "anime". socially, i dont think its anime unless you can dress up like a character from the show, walk around your public mall, and stand out like a **alf**.

I'd like to see anime superdork fans get into The Boondocks and try cosplay it. It'd be ..wow... too hilarious weird and awkward to ever happen.

Am I too late to this party?

I don't consider it anime in the sense that its themes are very American. Its heavily influenced by anime however.

The bigger question is can a cartoon not made in Japan be considered anime, the answer is yes but it has to include the characteristic look along with japanese themes and motifs. I don't think it necessarily has to be about Japan or japanese people however (considering some of the later animes)

With that in mind can a Japanese cartoon not be anime? The answer is obviously yes. Although I've never seen one. I think that really short kid's cartoon about the Vikings came close to breaking out.

This is something that has always confused me. For some reasons, the Western world seems to classify anime as animation of Japanese origin. As far as I know, everybody in Japan calls animation of any sort 'anime'. I could be wrong, but that's what I've been told. It seems somewhat backwards of us ('us' being the West) to give our own definition of what falls under the category, when Japanese animators apparently never made it an exclusive category. I mean, if a Japanese studio made a show with animation the quality of say, Season 1 of South Park, it's still anime. If the definition doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the show, or the writing or anything, it seems pointless. Look at it this way: If someone in Switzerland made Mozzarella cheese, we wouldn't call it Swiss cheese, right?

I'm not sure, but someone told me ounce that it's not an anime because the show is not produced in japan. IMO, I wouldn't say it's an anime either. I just think it's influence by anime. If you think about it, Te Boondocks is pretty amazing. I'm sensing that Aaron was a huge fan of anime, and he had this dream since he was writing to have his own anime show based of his life. Pretty cool huh? I'm inspired by him :smileyhappy:!!! To me The Boondocks is one of those great shows that we'll rarley get.
