you were the 12, but when 62*  reranked her name Luuv thought it was only fair to put her back in her original spot on the list. So we all got bumped down one notch.

* for those of you who didn't know the story 62 was the second person to reach owl, but at the time for her own reasons didn't want to be an owl. So she went and deleted posts untill she unranked. Then awhile later decided to start using her main again and it ranked again.

A new rank? No way. A puny number of 106 members out of ~750,000 registered users is hardly something to motivate change. And let's face it, the ridiculously high requirements for the next rank in post count would mean that only Incoherent Babblers would ever even chance to reach it -- hell, that's practically the case with OOTW. The 25,000 post mark required for OOTW alone gives people reason to literally spam the **bleep** out of these forums. I see people on these message boards that quadruple my post count when they've only been around for a year, when I just saw my fourth year pass two months ago. (Which is hardly anything to boast about. Surely I should be spending my time elsewhere doing something far more productive.)

Truth of the matter is, if it means something special to you guys to have a rank where only the most obnoxious, worthless spam posters on the forums ever reach, then that's fine -- but realize the ramifications of what you suggest to the general populace in making it appear okay to "+1" in every single thread. I just find the number of quality discussion threads to dwindle by the day.

Even in Babbling it's difficult to find a discussion worth posting in.

I blame Youtube.

A lot of people make threads in Babbling and just post a Youtube link. There's no discussion or anything, yet they're never moved to where they belong. IB.

A lot of people make threads in Babbling and just post a Youtube link. There's no discussion or anything, yet they're never moved to where they belong. IB.

Let's be truthful, the line of seperation between Babbling and Incoherent Babbling is hazy at best. The one defining trait that seperates Incoherent Babbling to regular Babbling is the absurd amount of "+1" posts found in Incoherent, which wasn't made on purpose and shouldn't even be accepted even in there. In the days of Prospero, the difference between the two folders was no where near what it was today. It could partly be to blame because the threads of both Babbling and IB were once on the same page, rather than in two completely seperate folders (which developed an isolation from one folder community to the other allowing elitism and cliques to fester, but that's a whole different discussion), but it could also be because there were no visible ways to proclaim your post count.

Yes, you could view your own through the options menu and what not, but with the inability to proclaim your status, post counts were meaningless and silly -- it was simply beside the point.

Don't think of this as an organized rant against ranks -- I love them for what they are. They give you a keen idea of where you place in user activity compared to other members. Not seniority. Not leniency in moderation. User activity. While I've been around longer than just about all of the current Order of the Owls except for maybe a dozen or less, I am not quite as active of a poster as some of them are. And that's fine. They like posting 50 times an hour? I like posting 5.

But the ranks create a downside: egotism. On Prospero, everyone was on a level playing field. No ranks. No posted registration dates. No nothing. Not even an avatar. One person was exactly the same as the next except for their user name -- and it worked. And Lithium works, too... though not as well in some cases.

Look, the point I'm meandering around is that adding another rank would simply increase such behavior. People being heralded as "better" users, "top" members of the forum simply because they run around posting "glomp" and "+1" one thread after the other is bad enough as it is -- hell, look at this thread. You guys sit around patting each other on the back and talk like you're the cream of the crop of something dearly special because your name is a different color.

Stop this nonsense.
