I'd just like to say, that I really appreciate what you people go through to make these shows work and be funny. I have a question at the end, but first, a lengthy statement. I used to have no real reason to watch Adult Swim, as Adult Swim action was turned into Adult Swim drama (which broke the world's smallest fiddle in the first handful of weeks), but now, I have Shin-chan. I believe personally that you did really well going for a "in the spirit of" thing that you did with Shin-chan. There was, however, another comedy show like this, but it bombed, since it stuck to the original script/comedy. That show was Super Milk-chan.

I don't know if you've ever seen it or heard of it, but it was a comedy from ADV Films that Adult Swim had on a year or so back (correct me if I'm wrong on the timeline). It... was horrible, at least to me, and that's because I never got half the jokes. Not that the show didn't look great or anything, but they kept all the original jokes. I almost feel as though they actually broadcasted it just to show what would happen if they kept the original jokes in an anime like that (comedy), then, magically, we have Shin-chan, everyone's busting a gut, and we have the wound that was Super Milk-chan haunting us, reminding us not to be purist weenies.

Actually, ADV had an "In the Spirit Of" set for Super Milk-chan (The Super Milk-chan Show), but they, oddly enough, chose to listen to the Japanophiles/Purists and show the original... which of course fell flat. I think when people think back to Milk-chan, and remember how they couldn't get the jokes or anything, and see the work you're putting in for this, they really appreciate what you're doing... that and they can finally get the jokes...

Finally, the question. My question is, will we be seeing anything like in the spirit of "Robot Chicken", IE, where they referenced the other AS shows like Family Guy, Aqua Teen, and Space Ghost? I know it'd be next to impossible to feature them in the actual episodes, but will we ever see Shin-chan slurping on a milkshake, only to hold it up in Action B*stard dynamic fashion and yell "Bow down to Master Shake! He is the Shiznight!"?

I can't say it enough, guys and gals. Thanks so much for Shin-chan, and making it of awesome and win. Here is your free internetz coupon. Only one though, cause I'm poor, dagnabbit.

Well, that depends what you mean by "rewritten."  I'd say that we rewrite around 98% of the dialogue - often times drastically, sometimes just to flow better and fit the lip flaps.  Story-wise, it's hard to put a percentage on.  Most of the time we don't stray too far from the overall plot even while changing all the jokes, but every once in a while, we come up with something totally different that we strain to make fit the animation.  Which is really, really tough.  I'm not sure when Episode 21 will air, but just wait...

How many things have you guys referenced so far, i mean whats the whole spectrum of referencing for you guys?
Maybe you could giveus some examples of past references, or maybe some ideas of what you'dlike to mention?

When we were writing the first batch of episodes, we used a lot of pop culture references (trying to keep up with Family Guy and Robot Chicken, I suppose).  However, after seeing that not many of them made it into those test run episodes (and after running out of ways to call Paris Hilton a stretched-out ho bag), we scaled way back.  However, since we're all pop culture sponges, there are still occasionally times where the perfect reference comes to mind.  We reference everything from foreign films to obscure documentaries to sitcoms to song lyrics to politicians to Degrassi: The Next Generation.

There's no way to add up how many references we've made in our scripts (well, there is, but I'm too lazy to do it).   But to give you a feel for the spectrum, here are a few of the things I referenced in the ALTs of my original draft of "A Bicycle Built for Poo" (most of which didn't make it to the final cut):

Pee Wee's Big Adventure, The Bicycle Thief, Flight of the Navigator, Risky Business, The Music Man, Saved By The Bell, A Time to Kill, Michael Jackson's 2003 60 Minutes interview, Apocalypse Now, Folgers Coffee commercials, Boogie Nights, Peter Pan, Star Trek, Star Wars, Franken Berry cereal, Buns of Steel, The Da Vinci Code, Jewel's A Night Without Armor, Where's Waldo, Madonna's Sex book, The Family Circus, The Toxic Avenger, Lance Armstrong, Serendipity (the John Cusack-Kate Beckinsale movie), Terminator 2, Team America, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Phish, Ann Coulter and of course, Paris Hilton.

Keep in mind, that was a vignette written AFTER we stopped using so many references!

We've made several references to Adult Swim shows in ALTs that didn't make it to the air.   I even pitched an ALT line for "Action **bleep** Busts a Move" where Happiness Bunny bemoans: "I think somebody's seen the Robot Chicken 'Kill Bunny' sketch way too many times."

As someone who worked on a couple of Dragon Ball Z episodes, it was really cool when I first saw Robot Chicken's "A Very Dragon Ball Z Christmas."  So it would be nice to repay the favor.  And if those guys ever do a Shin Chan parody, that would be totally awesome (hint, hint)!

Also, I did catch one or two of the super-faithful Super Milk Chan dubs on Adult Swim.  I kind of liked it in a "this is really bizarre" sort of way, though I wouldn't say it made me laugh.  I haven't seen any of the Americanized dubs yet, but it's been sitting in my Netflix queue.  Not being privy to upper level decisions, I just have to hypothesize, but I think that the reaction to those dubs must have paved the way for us to do our less-than-pure version of Shin Chan.  We stand on the shoulders of a freaky little blue-haired girl.

It's nice to know that pop culture referrences aren't stuck in the present as so many shows that rely on them make it seem.  We Gen X'ers have a great deal of pop culture gold to pluck from having grown up in the 80's and early 90's.  Most of which are already comedic genious by themselves even if they weren't meant to be.

Well I can sure say I did enjoy last nights Shin Chan, given one of the Video translated notes that was made certianlly made me laugh, as to having to say the B word right on the note, I guess that was part of the translation changes also that was part of this also, and I am impressed it is making this show more funny the Roboy Chicken, then again I guess you oysterboy99 seem to get amused of Seth Green's show.

Pop culture is such a broad thing too.  Its everything from the brands of clothing that are popular, movies, tv, fast food, electronics, toys, internet culture... there's a lot to play with.

What are everyone's favorite moments in pop culture?

A Few of Mine:

- Where's the Beef?

- Fight Club

- Office Space

- WWF Cartoon

- She-Ra

- Rainbow Brite

- In-and-Out Burger

- The Simpson's in the Tracey Ullman years

- Cell phones

I remember those 4 very well when I was about 5 years old, and besides it has been a long time since they had been mentioned, well I do know that In-and-Out Burger still is around knowing they even got one in Las Vegas, too bad they did not go north of Bakersfield knowing it was still not that big I guess, but even so, I never really visited that place.

I guess it is all about the issue of knowing the names might be just Simple words that are concidered needed to be filtered or not shown, I guess that was the case of it.

Only if they gave us a hint of what it looked like on a bump I guess, then that would be strange enough to work.

Hello. How nice of you to stop by at the boards, truly noble in my book.

At the moment I don't have any questions I would just like to say:

I am not a die-hard anime fan, I like anime, but I'm choosey in the sense that I don't really watch them ALL. That said I would like to say I truly love these episodes of Shin Chan [ I haven't seen any others, I must have been living under a rock? ] and I really look forward to more if they are coming.

It honestly makes me laugh out loud, which isn't necessarily the easiest thing to do. Oh and I think whoever does the voice of Shin's mom is PERFECT. Everyone else is great but her voice is perfect IMO.

Keep up the good work and Thanks again for stopping by. Everyone seems to like the show accross the board which is extremely rare around here.

You are asking the right questions! One of the best kinds of funny is saying something that's evocative and vague at the same time. The response we're fishing for is a surprised, confused, maybe even angry 'WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN!!?!?!'

If you don't know what "taking it sideways" is, but Patty Milfer does, and she has to DO IT ALL THE TIME, just trying to figure that out throws you off balance in a way that will allow the rest of the episode to sink into you more deeply.

Now that I've over-explained the laff-making process and spoiled everything such that no one will every enjoy it again, here's a fun piece of Patty Milfer trivia you can take with you. The actor who plays Penny's Mom brought her own mother to the studio on the very day we recorded that scene. If memory serves, her mom was not there for that specific line, but she missed it by maybe half an hour.

はじめまして 今日は-

It took me a while to get used to the 'wonky' animation style of Shin Chan, but it's a win.  I've really enjoyed the hard work you people have put into making this crazy TV show adultswim-worthy...and it really does show!  Hopefully you'll continue to make us laugh, cringe and keep watching for a looong time to come.
